Version 1.1 - Updated with Pictures - 7/28/20
In this guide I will outline a few basic macros and tips from 1-50. My priority in this guide is to make it accessible to all. By that I mean most of the gear is irrelevant as I used basic normal quality vendor gear, non-melded, no-food. There were a few exceptions to this and I will note where those are. The one Stat we care about is CP. So let’s get started
We first begin as a humble level 1 crafter with the following Stats.
Craftsmanship - Affects the Progress Bar (the top bar)
Control - Affects the Quality Bar (the bottom bar)
Crafting Points (henceforth known as CP) - Affects how many actions you can do on a single item
The actions and traits covered by this guide will go up to level 50.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 1 - Basic Synthesis
Effect : Increases Progress by Using 10 Durability
Efficiency : 100%/120% @ Level 31
Success Rate : 100%
CP cost : 0
Usefulness Rating 5/5
This will be our go to skill for increasing progress from levels 1-50. At level 31 it will be permanently increased thanks to our first trait.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 5 - Basic Touch
Effect : Increases Quality by Using 10 Durability
Efficiency : 100%
Success Rate : 100%
CP cost : 18
Usefulness Rating 5/5
This will be our go to skill for increasing quality 1-50 when we can’t afford more CP from other touches.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 7 - Master’s Mend
Effect : Restores 30 Durability
CP cost : 88
Usefulness Rating 4/5
This is pretty useful in rotations when you don’t have access to better skills, even after though the trade off in lower CP efficiency is nice in some rotations.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 9 - Hasty Touch
Effect : Increases Quality by Using 10 Durability
Efficiency : 100%
Success Rate : 60%
CP cost : 0
Usefulness Rating 2/5
Without Steady Hand (action removed in patch 5.1) this has become a filler action and is only useful in extending rotations so buffs line up. With only 60% reliability results can vary greatly, however being it costs 0 CP to use it does have its place in certain macros where you have extra Durability to spare.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 9 - Rapid Synthesis
Effect : Increases Progress by Using 10 Durability
Efficiency : 250%/500% @ Level 63
Success Rate : 50%
CP cost : 0
Usefulness 1/5
For the same reason Hasty Touch is a filler action this is even less useful. However after level 63 the trait that improves it makes it just barely worth using if manually crafting. However in macro crafting the unreliability of it makes it horrendous.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 11 - Inner Quiet
Effect : Grants Bonus Control with every increase in Quality. Can have up to 11 Stacks
CP cost : 18
Usefulness 6/5
This is what all crafting relies upon, it is the single skill that will see the most usage in your journey.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 13 - Observe
Effect : Do Nothing for one step
CP cost : 7
Usefulness 1/5 (Pre-67) 3.5/5 (Post-67)
The reason this is so low is in almost all cases Hasty Touch is more CP efficient being it costs 0 CP and this costs 7. Plus Hasty Touch can give you an Inner Quiet Stack. Later on it combos with other actions, making it useful.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 13 - Tricks of the Trade
Effect : Restores 20 CP
Condition : Material Condition must be Good or Excellent
CP cost : 0
Usefulness 2/5 (in macro crafting) 3.5/5 (in manual crafting)
The Rng proc of Good/Excellent make it a poor choice for use in macros. but that’s not to say it isn’t useful outside of them. The trade off of delaying an action can be beneficial if you don’t have a touch action buffed when condition becomes good/excellent.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 15 - Waste Not
Effect : For the next four actions Durability reduction is halved.
CP cost : 56
Usefulness 4/5
This is more CP efficient than Master’s Mend, however the fact that you have to plan on it being active for four steps (rather than an instant refresh to Durability) holds it back. Combos very well right after Ingenuity also.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 15 - Veneration
Effect : For the next four steps, effectiveness of Synthesis actions are increased
CP cost : 22
Usefulness 4.5/5
The CP cost of this action makes using it more beneficial on Higher CP cost actions and will net you more CP in the long run for Crafting.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 18 - Standard Touch
Effect : Increases Quality by Using 10 Durability
Effect 2 : CP reduced to 18 if comboed w/ Basic Synthesis
Efficiency : 125%
Success Rate : 100%
CP cost : 32 (18)
Usefulness 5/5
The higher CP cost of this action does make it less CP efficient than Basic Touch but it is Much more Durability efficient. When buffed, this action becomes much more CP efficient than Basic touch as well. Really just a good upgrade when you can slot it in.
(5.4 Update) With patch 5.4 this actually now has a major buff to it, reducing it’s CP by 14 will make some macros where you would just spam Basic Touch go way up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 21 - Great Strides
Effect - Increase Efficiency for next touch action by 100%, effect is active for the next 3 steps.
Formula = (Action Efficiency x 2 ). So Great Strides + Basic Touch = 200%
Great Strides + Standard Touch = 250%
CP cost : 32
Usefulness 5/5
This works so well with another action we will learn at 50, most if not all rotations will have at least one Great Strides in them. Just a great skill overall.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 26 - Innovation
Effect : For the next four steps Touch actions are an additional 50% more Efficient.
CP cost : 18
Usefulness 3.5/5
Think of this as Great Strides’ little sister. It does less and hangs around longer, but when they’re used together it’s a party.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 37 - Name of the Elements
Effect : For the next 3 steps Brand of the Elements efficiency is increased up to 200%, based off of current progress. Can only be used once per craft.
CP cost : 30
Usefulness 2.5/5
For as high as the CP cost is and what little we have 1-50, it just isn’t that great - though later on it does shine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 37 - Brand of the Elements
Effect : Increase Progress for 10 Durability
Efficiency : 100%
Success Rate : 100%
CP cost : 6
Usefulness 2.5/5
This is meant to be comboed off of Name of the Elements, but again the CP restriction makes it hard to use.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 42 - Final Appraisal
Effect : Keeps you from Filling progress bar completely for five steps.
CP cost : 1
Usefulness : 2/5
It has niche uses when you’re testing new rotations and later on. If your next progress increase would finish the craft it stops you from doing that, allowing you to increase Quality. I’ve always designed my macros to fill Quality first then Progress so I see little value in it. However, the price of just 1 CP is very nice.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 47 - Waste Not II
Effect : For the next eight actions Durability reduction is Halved.
CP cost : 98
Usefulness 3.5/5
Waste Not’s big brother. If your rotation calls for two Waste Nots this will reduce that cost by 14, allowing you to turn a Basic Touch into a Standard Touch. And is much more CP efficient than Master’s Mend.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 50 - Byregot’s Blessing
Effect : Increases Quality for 10 Durability.
Efficiency : 100% + (20% x # of Inner Quiet Stacks) up to a maximum of 320%
Success Rate : 100%
CP cost : 24
Usefulness 6/5
This is it! The skill. Combined with Great Strides and other buffs, this will skyrocket your progress. The CP cost is very, very reasonable for what this actually does.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that the Actions have been covered it’s time to actually start using them. Apologies for the length of that section, but this is a beginner’s guide and being thorough is important for those just starting.
Our statistics with just the first tool are 21 Craftsmanship / 0 Control / 180 CP, and from there we shall grow. Until we get to level 5 there isn’t much we can do about crafting and even then it’s pretty simple.
Level 1 - 5: Basic Synthesis. That’s it. That’s all you’ll use for those 5 levels
Level 5 - 7: A few Basic Touches and one or two Basic Synthesis, getting started with those will teach you the very basics.
At Level 7 we can actually start using Macros to craft for us. I’ve thrown that word around a lot so far and you might be wondering what it is. To put it plainly it is a command or list of commands set to execute in a specific order with minimal human interaction. And how do we get there? If using a controller, press Start to bring up the main menu then go to System tab, and select User Macros. If using a keyboard and Mouse. hit Escape and select User Macros.
The ones in FFXIV can be up to 15 lines long and I won’t go too in-depth about them here. That’s another guide for another day. As far as we’re concerned, you will add your Crafting actions to the text Box and can select an icon for it and a name, then just drag it to your hot bar, and with one button press it’ll do your work for you. Viola!
Side note: The following macros were designed to give a general idea how crafting is done and what CP you have to work with. Most of these are not 100% HQ guaranteed. They fall from between 14-76% chance most often, but if you craft with all HQ mats then these should reliably return with a 100% chance based off your level.

Food can also be bought from the nearby Independent Culinarians, such as Frumenty and Stone Soup. We’ll mention why soon.
The next few macros we will use will have their CP requirement listed. And also now recipes are starting to get better durability rating, which means more actions.

If you want to put off upgrading you can always supplement with vendor food for CP.
At level 19 you will be able to wear a Brass Choker together with the previous CP accessories, which will boost us to 251 CP, allowing us to use a new macro once we learn Great Strides at Level 21. Along with Frumenty or Stone Soup. And Also a new 40 Durability Macro for Level 26 and under items at Level 23.

These lasted well enough through to high 20’s. Between 26 and 29, you’ll want to upgrade your gear again (see above for Vendors). I also went back and reworked a few of the Starter Macros at this point to make them more reliable with the extra CP we have at this point. These worked for everything under 25 at Level 29.

The Revised Beginner Macros for 40 Durability can be adjusted as your CP improves, this assumes that your Veneration + Basic Synthesis will finish it in one action as well.
(268) +14 CP Extra , Change a Basic Touch into a Standard Touch
(272) +18 CP Extra , Change a Hasty Touch into a Basic Touch
(286) +32 CP Extra , Change a Hasty Touch into a Standard Touch
And because of the additional CP, we are able to create a new one for 80 Durability recipes. These will probably require food buffs as well because of the relatively high CP needed. If you can’t complete the craft in 3 Basic Synthesis’ , Drop the Innovation and put a Veneration before the 3 Basic Synthesis’ .

These ones last for a while. I came up with two more as we creep up on the 40’s and improve our gear again. Around 38 is where we can start to use them. Our base CP before food should be 274. With Stone Soup NQ we can add in another Innovation, Place it before the Waste Not.

At 41, I acquired a fairly easily crafted set of gear, the vintage chef’s set (don’t worry, it’s not Culinarian exclusive) , to help push my CP a little higher for the next macro I developed for 40 durability. It brought my base CP up to 293 At this Point All my Gear was HQ as well. About here is when I stop relying on vendors for gear and really am able to craft my own with decent proficiency so I STRONGLY SUGGEST you do the same.

With the above macros, getting 50 was no problem. I hope your journey onwards is a breeze.
I hope this Guide helped all of you and see you in the next one :)
Disclaimer : These steps are MUCH MUCH easier after you get to around mid 50’s and even more so if you have Heavensward Crafting gear. I highly Recommend Waiting as it is a headache waiting to happen. When I did this back in 2016 before I purchased HW, I was Capped at 50. However we had better actions @ 50 in Steady Hand (removed) and Comfort Zone (removed) as well as a few others that got slashed or modified. [ Not Updated to 5.4 ]
However I decided to go a step further and see just how far I could push out at Level 50 without overmelding gear, I did meld during the 50 - 50**** steps, but you kind of have to. I guess the first thing is to complete your Level 50 associated Crafting Class Quest. You will get a new Blue Tool that is upgradeable in 3 steps. Base, Supra, and Lucis. As well as one piece of class exclusive item level 55 gear. But wait how am i going to equip level 55 gear if I’m only 50 you may ask. Well FFXIV has a cap set for each of its expansions. A Realm Reborn Covers Levels 1-50 and Item Level 1-135, Heavensward covers Level 50-60 and Item Level 115-275, Stormblood covers Level 60-70 and Item Level 255-405, Shadowbringers covers Level 70-80 and should cover Item Level 385-535. It is a way to continue gearing after you hit the level cap for that expansion. This set in its NQ form will work fine for our purposes going forward. It can be very affordable from the Market Board.
I also went ahead and acquired the best level 50 secondary tool, belt and accessories in HQ: an Artisans secondary tool(Item level 70) , a Dodore Belt (Item level 55), Mosshorn Earrings(Item level 55), Rose Gold Choker(Item level 55), Militia Wristlets(Item level 55), and two Aetheryte Rings(Item level 55). They can be daunting to make yourself in HQ. The best advice is to find a crafter in the discord on your server who is capable of making them for you. It is very easy for them to make if they are level 80. Just provide the materials they need to make and people will help. I love that about our Discord Family.
The next thing is going to Mor Dhona and talking to Guiding Star who wants to see that new Blue tool. You will then be able to purchase from the guy next to him a Master Crafting Book 1. In Exchange for a 50** 40 Durability crafted item related to that job. For example, for BSM and ARM it’s a HQ Darksteel Ingot. The marketboard has them relatively cheap if you can find them.
At this stage you might notice you can’t craft certain things, as they have minimum stats to craft. So I melded the level 55 Job Specific Set and the Accessories I previously Mentioned
My Stats at this point were 349 Craft / 320 Control / 320 CP
Since my CP was 320, I developed a macro to make the 50* Material for the Master Crafted item we need to turn in. In order to replace our gear with the Artisan’s Item level 70 Set. You can also buy the Artisan’s Item level 70 set from your Grand Company with a high enough rank if you would rather do that.

This next step sucks to do in order at 50 to unlock Master Crafting 2, but I did it for you folks anyway. Because for some reason they decided to have a recipe this difficult only able to accept 1 HQ material. The best you can hope for at 50 is ~30% chance , 60% with Lucis Tool (when using a macro) of getting the HQ Product you need to trade in. One NQ is required along with a mastercraft Demimateria to upgrade that Blue Tool you have into its Supra Form. If it doesn’t make it HQ at least you can trade the NQ back to Talan for a partial refund of the Fieldcraft Demimateria 3.

The last thing at 50 we can unlock is the 50**** Crafts, but to do that we need the Lucis tool. And to get that we have to craft 5 HQ Items From Master Craft 1 Book. One of the items to craft what you need is available for purchase from your GC, as this one is untradeable. One is available from Level 50 Dungeons. And the last is a timed gathering node. Like what we just did, the failed NQ can be traded back to Talan for a refund on materials. You will also need 5 Moonstones, which are available from Level 50 Treasure Maps, Ixal Daily Quests, or for purchase at Grand Company with seals.
I believe the Level 50 - 320 CP, 40 Durability will work with Sharkfin Soup HQ on these. Under a Crafting Simulator they did work but only Low HQ chance. And that brings me to the level 50**** Recipes. In a simulator with The absolute Best Gear at 50 penta-melded, best food, FC buff, and as many HQ items as you can use, the best I could get was 91% HQ chance. But most of the 50**** recipes are obsolete now. The DoW/M Gear is beaten by Augmented Ironworks, and the Ramuh weapons still have glow effects even at NQ, so HQ isn’t a necessity.
And with that, we complete our journey from 1-50****. See you all in the second guide where I will also go over Collectables - which are just fabulous.
