Can I send a cheque or credit card?

Generally, the easiest and lowest cost way to donate is through our Facebook Fundraiser, which bundles all donations and then sends 100% to ITIF. It also waives all the credit card fees. If you do not want to use Facebook, then our GoFundMe campaign is the second best alternative and only has some small credit card fees associated with it.

If you do not want to use Facebook or GoFundMe, which both accept credit cards, US donors can also donate using a credit card through Donately:

ITIF has a special page on their website to support their Clean Energy Innovation program.

You can also send cheques if you want to make a slightly larger donation.

If you want to make a donation via cheque now, then you can send a cheque to:

Information Technology & Innovation Foundation (ITIF)

700 K Street NW, Suite 600

Washington, DC 20001

United States

Please put "Clean Energy" in memo line so your funds are allocated appropriately - and let us know how much you donate so we can add it to our fundraising total!

You can also use Chequebook.io to mail your cheque digitally for a small fee.

Can I donate with PayPal?

If you want to make a slightly bigger donations (>$100), you can use the PayPal link that follows, but in that case you absolutely must e-mail us the receipt to donations@lets-fund.org so that we can tell ITIF that the donation is restricted to the Clean Energy Initiative (otherwise you’ll make an unrestricted donation to ITIF). If you’re a UK taxpayer, after you donate, you’ll get a donation receipt by email and you might be able to add GiftAid here. The link to PayPal donation page which doesn’t charge any fee (100% of your donation will be passed on, and PayPal waives all the fees) but for which you need to email us the receipt is here.

Can I donate via Wiretransfer?

In Europe, you can donate to ITIF via Bank transfers through a Berlin-based organization "Effektiv Spenden" that we're partnering with. 100% of your donation will be forwarded to ITIF and your donation will be tax deductible in Germany (and perhaps also in other EU countries).  Their profile of ITIF is here (currently only in German).

Here are the bank details:

Recipient:

UES – Gemeinnützige Unternehmergesellschaft (haftungsbeschränkt) für effektives Spenden

If that doesn't fit you can abbreviate this as:

UES gUG

IBAN:

BIC/SWIFT:

Bank:

GLS Gemeinschaftsbank eG

Please remember to put ITIF as the reference.

Can I donate stocks or securities through Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab, or my broker?

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and has a Guidestar profile, which has all the information you need to send to donate stocks or securities. In particular, ITIF’s EIN number: 20-4403497 might be enough to donate stock.

Note that on some platforms such as Schwab there is a missing space and one might need to search for "Information Technology andInnovation Foundation".

If you do not use a bigger platform you can use  Cocatalyst, which helps with donating stocks in case your broker does not provide this service.

They charge a small 1.75% transaction fee charge. There you simply fill in a form with your details and the contact details of your financial advisor / broker.  Here some details that you might need:

Under Memo to Charity (Optional) put "For the Clean Energy Innovation Program"

Full name of the charity: Information Technology and Innovation Foundation

Website of Charity: https://www.itif.org/

E-mail of charity: jwhisman@itif.org

State of charity: Washington D.C.

When you have made the donation please let us know your name and the amount you donated, so we can tell ITIF that your donation is restricted to their Clean Energy Innovation program and add it to our fundraising total.

Is my donation tax deductible?

This depends on which country you’re in.

United States:  If you donate through Facebook or GoFundMe, then your donation is likely tax deductible and Facebook or GoFundMe will issue a receipt. The 2020 CARES Act includes a new deduction for total charitable contributions of up to $300. The incentive applies to contributions made in 2020 and would be claimed on tax forms next year. More information here.

Canada: If you’d like to make a slightly larger donation (>US$1000), then please email us about this and we can make your donation tax deductible in Canada through RCForward. Unfortunately, smaller donations are not tax deductible.

EU: If you donate through Effektiv Spenden, then your donation will be tax-deductible in Germany and perhaps also in other EU countries.

Other countries: As the tax laws vary by country, please consult a tax professional regarding the deductibility of this donation.

I have a question that isn’t answered here. How can I get in touch?

Feel free to email us!

How are my donations handled?

You can donate through our GoFundMe campaign. Donations are processed through GoFundMe fundraiser and are sent to PayPal Giving Fund, which is a UK registered charity (no. 1110538). PayPal Giving Fund distributes donations to charities (in this case Cardiff University) on a monthly basis, within 15-90 days of donation.

We have a non-legally-binding Memorandum of Understanding (you can see this here) with Cardiff University. They have agreed to allocate the funds of our fundraiser to Professor Chambers’ work on advocacy for Registered Reports. If this purpose in the University’s reasonable opinion becomes impractical or ceases to be in accordance with the University’s strategic plans, they will, after consultation with Let’s Fund, and the Head of School of Psychology, apply the Gift to a purpose similar or related to the original.

Let’s Fund does not handle the money or have any sort of control over it. Legally speaking, it is similar to a situation where a friend runs a marathon for e.g. a cancer charity and encourages you to donate directly to the charity.

Are there any fees?

GoFundMe does not charge any platform fees but does charge 1.9%-2.9% payment processing fees + $0.30 depending on the country you’re in. You can avoid paying any processing fees by using the PayPal link that follows, but in that case you absolutely must e-mail us the receipt to donations@lets-fund.org so that we can tell Cardiff University that the donation is for Professor Chris Chambers to do Registered Reports advocacy (otherwise you’ll make an unrestricted donation to Cardiff University). If you’re a UK taxpayer, after you donate, you’ll get a donation receipt by email and you can add GiftAid here. The link to PayPal donation page which doesn’t charge any fee but for which you need to email us the receipt is here.

Let’s Fund does not handle any of your donations and thus does not take fees. If you would like to make a donation to support Let’s Fund’s research, please get in touch.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Outside of the United Kingdom: As the tax laws vary by country, please consult a tax professional regarding the deductibility of your donation. It might be difficult because you’re donating to a UK charity / non-profit. You’ll get receipts that look like this: GoFundMe receipt, PayPal receipt. If you’d like to make a larger donation and need have it be tax deductible, please get in touch and we will find e.g. a 501(c) that can regrant to Cardiff University. For smaller donors, note that tax effectiveness is just a minor factor in the overall impact of your giving. In other words, it is probably more effective to give to a highly effective non-profit and miss out on tax deductibility than to give to a not so effective non-profit that is tax deductible.

Inside the UK: Your donation is tax-deductible in the UK through the Gift Aid scheme, which allows charities to claim an additional 25p from the UK Government per £1 donated. You must be a UK taxpayer and tick the box on GoFundMe confirming this. PayPal Giving Fund will claim Gift Aid (£0.25 to the charity for every £1 donated) and pass along 100% to the designated charity once enrolled.

What if I want to make a larger donation?

If you plan to make a larger donation of more than $10,000 (€/£7,500) and have any questions, feel free to get in touch or call +447719918177. We’re happy to talk.
