Welcome to 2021 National Workshop on Data Science Education
Monday morning is the start of the fourth annual National Workshop on Data Science Education. This year is the second to be hosted virtually, which has allowed us to expand the reach and the inclusion of the event. Over 400 participants from approximately 27 countries and 43 US states represent over 290 unique institutions. Hopin Conference Link
On Monday and Tuesday we will present about the exciting and diverse efforts going on at UC Berkeley’s Undergraduate Data Science program and beyond, and Wednesday through Friday the content is composed of a series of panels on different topics of interest to educators. The panels bring together a wide diversity of voices from approximately 65 speakers from over 50 unique institutions.
Monday: The day begins with a Welcome and overview at 8:30, and is mainly designed for first time attendees. At the first session incoming Associate Dean John De Nero will give an overview of Data 8, this will be followed by an introductory lab, where you can experience going through a Data 8 lab as a student would. Next, there is a panel of 3 instructors who have started a Data 8 type class at their institution. The afternoon panels will include open source technical infrastructure, an advanced Data 8 lab, and some options for how the class can be hosted in the cloud.
Tuesday: The day starts with a keynote address from Michael Jordan to discuss the theoretical overview of the Berkeley program in Data Science, following the recent publication of a Discussion Paper in the Harvard Data Science Review. Next, we will have a presentation of Data 6, a new course that introduces computing topics prior to Data 8. This is followed by a session on Data 100 with Fernando Perez and Joey Gonzalez, a panel on Data Communication, hosted by Associate Dean Deb Nolan, and a session on Data Science Modules and Connectors. Tuesday morning there is an optional workshop from 8-10am on teacher training for teaching Human Contexts and Ethics that you can sign up for here
Wednesday: A panel on HCE, with three examples of “Data Justice” classes; a Panel on the California Alliance for Data Science Education with overview of UC, CSU, and Community College efforts; and a panel on Data 8 adopters at a range of institutions;
Thursday: a panel on Data Science at the High School level, a panel on National Initiatives and Networks that span multiple institutions, and a panel of different technologies for teaching Data Science.
Friday: a panel on Inclusion in Data Science, a panel on Math Classes for Data Science, and a panel on Data Science Capstone / Project-based work.

One great benefit of using the Hopin Platform is the Networking feature. You can think of it as a “speed dating” tool which would allow you to meet new instructors and make the workshop more personal.. We are planning to make Lunch times 12-1 for Networking, but you are welcome to check it out throughout the day.
Another new feature this year is that we have a few Expo booths with commercial vendors. These can be visited anytime, but they are planned to be live/staffed Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 3:30-5.
Code of Conduct: We value the participation of each member of the community and want all attendees to have an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Accordingly, all attendees are expected to show respect and courtesy to other attendees throughout the workshop and at all workshop events. Workshop Code of Conduct
