Dear SAINTS and Friends,
We are so happy that you have chosen to join the St. Anthony School Family, where we all strive to become Saints. Within, you will find helpful information and school policies and procedures.
Why do we do what we do at St. Anthony Catholic School? Here’s why: We imbue each of the subjects we study at St. Anthony with the goodness, the truth, and the beauty of creation. Learning about creation helps us to know, to love, and to give our lives to the Creator of it all. Think about it – God Himself had to learn how to be a carpenter, how to speak and read His native Aramaic and the Scriptures of the Jewish people.
Being a Catholic school sets us apart from other local private and public schools. As the first educator of your child(ren), you model your faith. As students, you are called to live a life of holiness. Let’s rely on Jesus so that our time here together helps us grow closer to one another and to those in need.
God bless you,
Sr. Mary Jackson, FMA - Principal
This handbook exists for the efficient operation of St. Anthony School. In appropriate circumstances, the Principal has the discretion to take actions other than those specified in the handbook. We use it as a guideline for our interactions.
This handbook is subject to change at any time by the School Administration. The handbook remains available here at all times.
St. Anthony School is accredited as a STEM school by Cognia , the world’s largest accrediting and school improvement organization.
We adhere to St. John Bosco’s “Preventive System of Education” implementing three basic tenets:
We believe all children are a sacred and shared trust. We believe that each child is a gift from God who must be treated with dignity, respect, and care.
Based on these beliefs, we embrace the following goals:
St. Anthony School admits students of any race, color, religion, and ethnic origin, without discrimination. Every student has access to all the education, rights, privileges, programs, and activities available at the school.
Rooted in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, St. Anthony School, in communion with the Catholic Schools of the Paterson Diocese, and as an integral part of St. Anthony Parish Community, is committed to bringing about the Christian transformation of the world.
The mission of the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Paterson is to develop communities that are Christ-centered, academically excellent, and welcoming, enabling students to be lifelong learners and good citizens of the world.
As members of the Diocese of Paterson, we, the school community of St. Anthony, seek to prepare our students to live according to Catholic values as they strive toward academic excellence and spiritual growth. With the cooperative efforts of administration, faculty, parents and parish, we provide a moral foundation for our students by following Jesus’ example in implementing guiding principles of reason, religion, and loving kindness. We are committed to supplying our children with a solid educational background, the resources they need to achieve, and the confidence that will lead to their success.
We, the Catholic school educators of the Diocese of Paterson, will lead and model the teaching and integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through innovative and research-based student engagement.
STEM education, grounded in Catholic values, will prepare and empower our students to be creative, collaborative and morally responsible contributors to the advancement of the global community.
A spirit of Christ-like charity, respect for authority, and mutual cooperation are essential elements of the learning environment at St. Anthony School. Students attending the Morning Care and After Care program, as well as those participating in Extracurricular Activities are required to follow the Code of Conduct.
Water Bottle Policy is later in the document. You can click here to see it.
Parent Responsibilities
The organization of St. Anthony School is as follows:
PreK3: Offers the opportunity to develop socially and spiritually while furthering independence.
Pre-K 4: Provides a series of learning experiences that foster cultural enrichment and school/social readiness.
Kindergarten - Grade 2: Introduces departmentalization; primarily features self-containment for the major subjects.
Grades 3-5: Fosters autonomy by extending departmentalization throughout the curriculum.
Grades 6-8: Introduces full departmentalization with eventual homogeneous grouping for mathematics and science.
All Grades: Art, music (band for older grades), computer science, Spanish, and physical education are offered by special subject teachers.
In addition to the Non-Discrimination Policy above, St. Anthony School welcomes students of all faiths.
St. Anthony School depends upon the support of our parish church, so active parishioners of St. Anthony Church enjoy a parishioner discount for the children they register. Parishioners must regularly contribute to the weekly envelope system of St. Anthony Church for at least six months prior to application for the discount. Catholic applicants submit a Baptismal Certificate and verification of any additional sacraments, if applicable.
Non-Catholic students are welcome at St. Anthony School and acknowledge that the school exists to educate in the framework of Catholic values. Non-Catholic students participate in religion classes and attend liturgical services, Masses and retreats scheduled for students during the school year.
A birth certificate must be submitted for proof of age.
N.J.A.C. 6A: 16-2.2 requires students to undergo a medical exam prior to school entry. It is recommended (at minimum) to have a complete physical exam for students entering Grade 4 and Grade 8. New Jersey law requires 180 student days annually. Prompt, regular attendance is required of all students unless they become ill or must miss a day due to unavoidable circumstances.
Regular attendance and participation in classes, along with interaction between student and teacher, as well as the interaction among students in class are a vital and integral part of the learning process. Attendance is seen as a means of serving educational ends. Frequent absences from school and tardiness from school disrupts the continuity of the instructional process.
Any student accumulating more than 21 absences for the year may not be promoted unless acceptable documented evidence is presented to the school administration.
Full time PreK3-8 students: 7:50 AM – 3:00 PM
Part-time PreSchool students: 7:50 AM – 11:30 AM
Morning Care Program: 7:00 AM – 7:35 AM
After Care Program: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Early dismissals and planned closings can be found on Google calendar here. The public URL is available here. The calendar is regularly updated.
Unplanned closings, delayed openings and other emergencies are communicated through Rediker’s Alert Solutions Portal, the SAS School App, local news stations, and the St. Anthony School Facebook page.
We make every effort to decide by 9:30 PM (the evening before) or by 6:30 AM to allow for childcare planning.
Delayed Opening Schedule:
Morning Care is NOT available on delayed opening days.
Full-time Preschool - Grade 8: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Doors open at 9:45 AM)
Part-time Preschool 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Should a Delayed Opening emergency occur on a scheduled ½ day, the school will run a 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM schedule. Parents will send lunch to school with their child.
All parents must adhere to the arrival and dismissal procedures distributed at the beginning of each school year. Parents are responsible for their child’s safety until they are inside the building prior to school, and after they are released from the school building at dismissal.
Preschool and Pre-K students will be escorted to their classroom upon arrival.
Students in K-8 walk directly to the gym without escort. Grades 6-8 may access their lockers 7:35 AM – 7:50 AM most days before assembly. On Tuesdays, the middle school students report directly to the gym and are not allowed to go to their lockers.
When a student is absent from school, a parent must notify the office by 9:00 AM. If the office does not receive a call by that time, they will contact a parent to verify the absence.
Children who show signs of illness, including colds, coughing, or a temperature exceeding 100° must stay home.
Parents are strongly advised to schedule doctor, dental, and other appointments outside school hours. Early dismissal requires a written note from the parent, signing the student out, and back in upon return.
Parents are strongly encouraged to arrange family time during scheduled vacations. In case of family need, please alert the office and teacher prior to the student’s absence.
“Bring Your Child to Work Day” may be an excused absence. Students in Grades 7 and 8 are allowed a total of three (3) excused absences to “shadow” high school programs.
If a student is absent from school due to illness or disciplinary action, they may not take part in extracurricular or athletic activities that day.
Students should be fever-free (without the aid of medication) for 24 hours before returning to school.
Absentee notes are due to the homeroom teacher upon return to school. The note must include the child’s full name, dates of absence, and reason for the absence. If the student has been absent for three consecutive days or more, a physician’s note is required before a child may return to school.
Teachers and the office must be notified of late arrivals, early leaving, absences, and requests for work for an absent student.
Students who are absent due to illness have one day for each day of absence to make up missed assignments and exams. For example, if a student misses one day, they have one day to make up missed work. Arrangements may be made by emailing the homeroom teacher and the office to pick up missed homework/classwork assignments, if the student is absent for 2 or more days. The homeroom teacher and the office must be contacted before 9 AM on the 2nd day of absence, then work may be picked up in the dropbox no earlier than 3:00 PM.
Morning assembly begins with a school-wide prayer, pledge of allegiance to the flag of our country and when the students hear a spiritual thought for the day. Also much communication is shared about the daily agenda and the upcoming events of the week. It is essential that each student be present at assembly from its beginning.
Any student who enters the building after 7:50 AM is tardy. Late students must go to the School Office for a tardy slip and give it to their teacher when they go to the gym or their classroom. Multiple unexcused tardy arrivals will result in further action stated below.
A parent has the right to view their child’s academic record, standardized test results, health record, and emergency sheet. These are available on request.
The records of students receiving special services, and those records attached to publicly-funded services (e.g., child Study Team Reviews, Comp Ed, Speech, ESL, etc.) are the property of the Board of Education. A parent seeking access to these records must apply to the Board. The school is not permitted to distribute this information to anyone, not even to a parent.
All financial obligations to St. Anthony School must be met before transcripts are released.
Transcripts will be sent directly from school to school upon request from the receiving school. The receiving school must secure written permission from the parent to forward any of their child’s transcript or classified information to another school.
Families who wish to transfer a child to St. Anthony School must submit a transfer notification, most recent report card and standardized test scores from the previous school. Meeting with the principal is standard.
We encourage productive communication between parents and teachers. Formal parent-teacher conferences are held in the fall and spring, after report card distribution. Parents may schedule conferences throughout the year by contacting the office. Dismissal time does not afford enough privacy to discuss your child’s progress. Parents may not go to classrooms without prior notification and consent of the teacher.
Staff members communicate with parents by phone, letter, @stanthonyschool.org email, or in person. Both parent and teacher should know the purpose of the conference to prepare appropriately.
Parents must bring questions or concerns to the teacher first. Teachers have daily contact with the students. It is required to email or call the teacher before contacting the principal. If the concern is not resolved, then the principal should be contacted. Should the situation require additional mediation, the Pastor may be engaged.
Mutual trust and respect between the students and teachers are imperative. Students are to go to their teacher first in dealing with academic or social concerns and issues.
Our school calendar is available on Google calendar here with the option to add it to your calendar. The public URL is available here. The calendar is regularly updated.
Please provide updated contact information to the school office, teachers, and class parents as soon as possible and change contact information on Rediker through the Parent Portal.
St. Anthony School abides by applicable laws for non-custodial parents. Parents with a custody agreement must file a court-certified copy with the principal’s office. The school can only be responsible for adhering to agreements on file.
Only the custodial parent or their designee may pick up the child from school. Non-custodial parents must provide written authorization from the custodial parent to pick up from school. In an emergency, a clearly defined, one-time telephone authorization may be acceptable.
If there is no custodial agreement on file with the school, the child may be picked up by either parent and any designee on the emergency card.
All parents belong to the Home-School Association, which usually meets twice yearly; dues and attendance are required. The HSA raises money to offset tuition costs. Parents participate in HSA fundraisers in accordance with the Parent Participation Agreement.

The Diocese of Paterson requires the NWEA MAP Growth Assessments for Grades 1-8 three times annually. Grades 5 and 8 also take the ACRE (Assessment of Catechesis of Religious Education). All 8th grade students take the HSPT high school exam in the fall as required by the diocese.
Students are responsible for recording homework assignments, bringing home study materials, and respecting due dates. Assignments are designed to be completed in a reasonable amount of time; if you have concerns about how long an assignment takes, please discuss it with the teacher. It is not acceptable to give or copy homework from another student and will be subject to disciplinary action.
All students are issued a summer reading assignment. Students in Grades 2 – 8 also participate in IXL, a web-based math program.
Any practice of plagiarism (including from online resources) is unethical and is not tolerated. Any student caught plagiarizing will be disciplined appropriately according to grade level. Junior high students will need to re-do the work for partial credit. Disciplinary action will be taken.
Cheating of any type is not tolerated. Students who choose to cheat face detention, a failing grade, and/or suspension. Any student caught cheating will receive a grade of zero.
Report Cards are not issued until all financial obligations are met.

Participation in extracurricular activities requires students to achieve passing grades in all subjects. If a student receives an unsatisfactory grade, conduct referral detention, or multiple homework violations, the student will be put on probation. Probation is a one-week suspension from all activities. At the end of the probation period, the student's performance will be reassessed and probation may either be extended or rescinded.

Annual field trips correlate with specific curricular goals. Signed permission slips must be returned to the school office on time.
Teachers and chaperones supervise field trips. With approval by the Principal, a teacher may deny or restrict student participation due to poor academic performance and/or conduct.
It is essential that we do our best to provide a safe, positive and productive
educational environment where each student may be afforded the opportunity to
achieve his or her maximum potential, without being subjected to Bullying, CyberBullying or Retaliation. Bullying, Cyber-Bullying, Retaliation and other similar
disruptive or violent behaviors constitute conduct that disrupts both a student’s ability
to learn and a school’s ability to educate its students in a safe environment. Pastors,
principals, faculty and other employees are expected to demand that all students treat
each other with civility, kindness and respect. Bullying, Cyber-Bullying and Retaliation
are not to be tolerated.
Accordingly, the Bullying Prevention Policy has been duly promulgated by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Paterson to apply to all Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Paterson and all Parish Schools located within the Diocese of Paterson, as well as to all other schools to which the Bishop or a pastor or group of pastors has authority to appoint or approve governing officers or administrators.
Definitions
For the purpose of this Policy, the following definitions shall apply:
Aggressor means a student who engages in Bullying or Retaliation.
Bullying is the repeated use by one or more students of written, oral or electronic
expressions, or physical acts or gestures or any combination thereof, with the intent to
cause harm through ridicule, harassment, humiliation or intimidation, directed at a
Target which a reasonable person should know would have the effect of:
damage to his/her property;
An isolated incident, however egregious, is not Bullying. Numerous acts of
misconduct against different students does not constitute Bullying. Such conduct may
warrant disciplinary action, but is not Bullying.
Cyber-Bullying means Bullying through the use of technology or any electronic
communication, which shall include, but shall not be limited to, any transfer of signs,
signals, writing, images, sounds, data or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole
Cyber-Bullying also includes the creation of a web page or blog in which the
creator assumes the identity of another person or knowingly impersonates
another person as author of posted content or message, if the creation or
impersonation creates any of the conditions enumerated in the definition of
Bullying.
Cyber-Bullying also includes the distribution by electronic means of a
communication to more than one person or the posting of material on an
electronic medium that may be accessed by one or more people, if the
distribution or posting creates any of the conditions enumerated in the definition
of Bullying.
Retaliation means any form of intimidation, reprisal or harassment directed against a student who reports Bullying or provides information during an investigation of Bullying.
School Grounds means property on which the school building or facility is located or property that is owned, leased or used by a school for a school-sponsored activity, function, program, instruction or training.
Staff means all employees of the school or parish and other individuals who receive stipends from the school or parish.
Student Handbook means the student handbook established by the school.
Target means a student against whom Bullying or Retaliation has been perpetrated.
Prohibition against Bullying and Retaliation
Bullying is prohibited:
Bullying by students is also prohibited at other locations and through other means if
It:
Reporting
Any Staff member who witnesses or becomes aware of Bullying or Retaliation shall report the incident(s) immediately to the Principal or to the Staff member designated as responsible for receiving such reports, or to both the Principal and such designee. All reports will be documented using the “Bullying Incident Report Form.”
Upon receipt of such a report, the Principal, or his or her designee, shall promptly conduct an investigation. Principals will report all Bullying incidents that result in suspension to the Superintendent of Catholic Schools who, in turn, will report to the Diocesan Attorney who may be required to report the incident(s) to the appropriate County Prosecutor.
Procedure for Investigation
Once a complaint has been reported, the Principal, or his or her designee, shall
promptly investigate to determine if Bullying has occurred. The Principal will review
the disciplinary history of the student(s) accused for indication of a pattern or past
history of similar behavior. A written report of the investigation shall be prepared
when the investigation is complete. The report shall include findings of fact, a
determination of whether acts of Bullying were verified, and, when acts of Bullying
were verified, the disciplinary action taken and any non-disciplinary action provided
or recommended to the parents or guardians of the Aggressor.
Retaliation
Retaliation against a person who reports Bullying, provides information during an
investigation of Bullying, or witnesses or has reliable information about Bullying shall
be prohibited.
Notifications
If the Principal, or his or her designee, determines that Bullying or Retaliation has
occurred, he/she shall:
The specific disciplinary consequences imposed on the Aggressor will not be disclosed to the parents or guardians of the Target, unless required by law.
If Bullying or Retaliation involves students from other schools, and the Principal identifies those students and their schools in the course of the investigation, then the Principal, or his or her designee, shall notify the appropriate administrator of the other schools of the incident so that the other schools may take appropriate action.
Disciplinary Action
Once the investigation is complete, the Principal, or his or her designee, shall determine
the consequences for the Aggressor(s) on a case-by-case, age appropriate basis.
Bullying can take many forms and can vary dramatically in how serious it is, and what
impact it has on the Target and other students. While conduct that rises to the level of
Bullying will generally warrant disciplinary action against the students responsible for
Bullying, whether to impose disciplinary sanctions and what sanctions to impose in a
particular case are matters within the professional discretion of the Principal, or his or
her designee. It is the goal of the school to have students achieve redemption, learn,
and stop Bullying. If the Principal, or his/her designee, deems that suspension is the
appropriate consequence, the Principal must notify the Superintendent of Catholic
Schools.
Disciplinary action for children in preschool and kindergarten will generally be
handled by the child’s teacher working with the student, the student’s family and
the Principal (as needed). These children are very young and are learning social
skills.
Non-disciplinary Intervention
When Bullying is identified early and/or when acts do not reasonably require a
disciplinary response, students may be counseled as to the definition of Bullying,
its prohibition, and their duty to avoid any conduct that could be considered
Bullying.
Consequences
The following list of consequences and remedial actions is provided as a guide
and by no means limits the school from implementing other additional
consequences and remedial actions consistent with the requirements of this
Policy.
Student Consequences:
Remedial Actions:
Types of support services that may be available by referral to the Aggressor, Target, witnesses, and any bystanders:
All students must abide by the school handbook they sign with their parents. Parents help their children understand and follow school rules; they cooperate with the school when a child’s behavior needs to be modified. All school faculty and staff hold the same disciplinary authority.
Appropriate discipline is at the discretion of the principal. St. Anthony School teaches accountability. A student who persists in violating basic obligations of courtesy, consideration, respect, cooperation or safety must accept the consequences, which may include:
Detention notifications identify the cause, and they must be signed by the student, parents, teacher, and principal. Detention is after school from 3:10 to 4:00 PM unless otherwise stated on the notification. Parents are responsible for picking up their children promptly after detention. Serving detention takes precedence over all other athletic and extracurricular activities. Missing detention will compromise participation in any extracurricular activity and receiving honors.

Two violations of the dress code result in the loss of the next dress down day privileges. If dress code violations continue other disciplinary actions will be implemented.
On dress down days, students do not have to wear their uniforms to school with the following restrictions:
For all the children’s safety, children are not permitted to run through the parking lot. Children must notify the teacher on duty before going to their car. Children still waiting after the cars start moving are brought to After Care and their parents charged.
After-school activities (including detention and tutoring) are dismissed from the gym doors. Children who are not picked up are brought to After Care and their parents charged.
Leaving school early requires an email from the parent 2 hours prior to pick up. Email the homeroom teacher and the office. Parents must go to the office and wait for their child to be signed out.
St. Anthony School has two safety drills a month. Students must follow the directions of their teachers and walk to their assigned places. Lockdown, shelter-in-place, and other safety drills are conducted according to state requirements. When a safety drill is practiced, the school will send an email to the parents communicating about this practiced drill, except for fire drills.
St. Anthony School follows the Acceptable Use Policy of the Diocese of Paterson. Students and parents must sign acceptance of the Internet and Technology Acceptable Use Policy. This policy applies to all school devices and digital content.
Student computers have security filters for inappropriate websites and material. St. Anthony School reserves the right to monitor any material posted or accessed. Profile picture must be school appropriate.
