The Celtic Music Interpretive Centre (CMIC) is a renowned not-for-profit society located in the picturesque village of Judique on Cape Breton Island. Our mission is to celebrate and foster the Celtic Music and Heritage of Cape Breton Island as a living tradition through archival preservation, education, and performance. As the official Celtic Music Centre of Nova Scotia and the official cultural archives for the County of Inverness, CMIC offers a unique and immersive experience of the history, culture, and music of Cape Breton Island.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an Interpretive Guide/Musician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a musician with a working knowledge of Cape Breton Island’s traditional music and history and a talent for storytelling and interpretation. This role involves leading guided tours and providing musical performances that enrich our visitors' understanding and appreciation of historical contexts through music.

Responsibilities:

•  Conduct guided tours and musical performances for visitors, incorporating historical narratives and musical elements to create an immersive experience.
•  Develop and deliver engaging presentations highlighting music's historical significance within cultural contexts.
•  Create and curate musical playlists or performances that reflect specific historical periods, styles, or cultural influences.
•  Engage with visitors, answering questions and providing insight into musical aspects of the exhibits and contexts of historical significance.
•  Maintain and organize musical instruments, props, and equipment for tours and performances.

Qualifications:

• Proven proficiency in playing one or more musical instruments, fiddle or piano preferred, and a strong foundation in the local traditional music idiom.
• Experience in public speaking, storytelling, or guiding tours, preferably in a cultural or historical context.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage and connect with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
• Flexibility to work a variable schedule, including weekends and holidays, as needed. Must be between 15 and 30 years of age.
• Prior experience working in heritage or cultural institutions is preferred.
• Multilingual abilities are a plus-English is required. French, Scottish, and Gaelic are considered assets.
•  Some college or university study is preferred.

Working Hours:

Regular working hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends required to accommodate operational needs.
