Prince Albert Ukrainian Dance Festival Syllabus 2025

Objectives of the Prince Albert Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Festival:

To provide an opportunity for Ukrainian dance students of all ages and experience to be motivated and encouraged by the dance performances of their peers.

To recognize the proficiency of individual dancers and groups of dancers in competition with their peers.

To these ends the following principles of adjudication shall be observed:

  1. The adjudication shall include as many statements and observations of a positive and encouraging nature to motivate students to continue in their dancing.

  1. The students will receive corrective or critical observations directed to improve the quality of their performances.  Ideally the adjudicator will be prepared to demonstrate correct movements personally.

  1. Critiques will be directed to any class of dancers in a general way.  Individual dancers will not be singled out for personal criticism

FESTIVAL DATE(s):          Friday April 11, 2025 

                    Saturday April 12, 2025

                           Sunday April 13, 2025 

ENTRY DEADLINE:         January 15, 2025 

ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL JANUARY 15, 2025. Entry fees are due within five business days of the entry deadline (January 22nd, 2025) 

ENTRIES ARE ACCEPTED ON A FIRST COME - FIRST SERVE BASIS. A limited number of entries will be accepted. 

AGE LIMITS:         The age of the contestant shall be considered as of January 1, 2025.  

FEES:         Solo:         $22.00 per dancer

Duet:         $20.00 per dancer

Group:         $15.00 per dancer

AWARDS:         Trophies and scholarships will be awarded - details will be provided in the Festival program. The decision of the adjudicator is final.  Any queries must be made in writing to the Festival Committee within 14 days following the Festival.

MEDALS:        Medals will be awarded to Solos, Duets, Small Groups Medium and Large Groups (at adjudication) as follows:

GOLD        90 – 100%  

SILVER        85 – 89%  

BRONZE        80 – 84%  

TIMING:         Time limits have been set as follows:

Solo:         maximum 2.0 minutes

Duet:         maximum 2.0 minutes  

Small Group:        maximum 4.0 minutes  

Medium Group:         maximum 4.0 minutes

Large Group:        maximum 5.0 minutes

Hopak:         maximum 7.0 minutes  

Regional Suite:         maximum 7.0 minutes

Timing begins with the first dancer(s) movement on stage until the dancer(s) leave the stage (including bows).  The adjudicator will have the final decision and may give demerits or choose to stop marking once the time limit is reached.  

AGE GROUPS:

Solo:                 (Male and female separate)

Novice         10 years        15 years  

6 years         11 years         16 years

7 years        12 years         17 years

8 years         13 years         18 years

9 years         14 years         19 years & over  

Duet:  Age groups are the same as solos, but male, female and mixed dancers will be separated into different classes.  Duet age is determined by the AVERAGE age of the dancers.

Group:  Small groups will have 3 to 5 dancers, medium groups will have 6 to 10 dancers and large groups 11+ dancers.  The group age is determined by the AVERAGE age of all dancers in the group to the nearest year.  Group dances are split into male, female and mixed categories.

Novice

13 – 14 years

6 years & under

15 – 16 years

7 – 8 years

17 – 18 years

9 – 10 years

19 years & over

11 – 12 years

In solo and duet classes, novice will mean the first year of dance lessons.  In group dances novice will mean that 75% of the dancers or more are in their first year of dance lessons.  

Character dances are not split between male, female and mixed.  Instructors may compete if they are a legitimate student of a dance club.

  • Pryvit
  • Hutsul’shchyna
  • Hopak
  • Bukovyna
  • Lyrical
  • Zakarpattia  
  • Regional Suite  
  • Volyn

  • Polissia  

  • Open Category – Ukrainian International – includes any dances outside the stated regions. State the region on the registration comment field.  
  • Character Dances — portrays a story or character: may be comedy, traditional or contemporary.  Adjudication is based on how the dancer(s) portray the story, as well as dancing ability.

** Please note that non-Ukrainian dance entries where traditional steps and/or music are not present may not be adjudicated.  

ENTRIES  

There is no limit on solos, duets and small medium or large group dances.

  1. Fill in the registration completely. Enter all names in alphabetical order with last name first.  
  2. Provide each dancer's birthdate and age as of January 1, 2025.
  3. For private instruction, ensure the club name includes the city/town.
  4. The entry registration includes a spot for special scheduling requests.  Provide requests as a note to the entry or send an email to the entry secretary. **Not all requests may be accommodated.  
  5. In the comment field of the registration indicate if the entry is a novice entry or, in the case of an open category, indicate the region it would fall under.  
  6. A group entry must include names and ages of all contestants.
  7. A cheque or eTransfer (treasurer@pabarveenok.com) to cover all entries from the school must be received no later than January 22, 2025.  Post-dated cheques will NOT be accepted.
  8. There will be no refunds on cancellations.
  9. Changes in entries to the festival can be made within a two (2) week period after the entry deadline date unless the entry secretary has made an error.  
  10. Competitors may only enter once in any one classification number. For example, a competitor may enter in only one Central Ukraine (Poltavski) mixed small group regardless of age classification.

**No changes will be made in the program. Times will not be altered, no exceptions**

Fees may be mailed and cheques made out to PA Ukrainian Dance Festival or eTransfers can be submitted to treasurer@pabarveenok.com.  Use the password: PAfestival as the security answer.

CONDITIONS AND REGULATIONS:

  1.  A speaker  will be available for rehearsal and festival, please bring any required dongles. An instructor or club representative will be responsible for playing their own music for the performance.
  2. The festival committee is not responsible for any injury incurred during the festival.
  3. The festival committee reserves the right to split or combine classes or age groups according to the number of entries received.
  4. NO CAMERAS OR VIDEOS ARE ALLOWED DURING THE COMPETITION.  NO EXCEPTIONS! Pictures are allowed during award presentations (not during medal presentations).
  5. The adjudicator will choose all winners. The adjudicator will break any ties. The decision of the adjudicator will be final. The adjudicator has the right to set the technical standard that he/she will consistently apply throughout the festival. The festival committee has no jurisdiction in changing the set standard.
  6. COMPLAINTS MUST BE MADE IN WRITING and given to a member of the committee. Queries may be directed to any committee member. Anyone making a complaint in an IMPROPER manner or anyone approaching the adjudicator may be banned from the festival for one year.
  7. The committee reserves the right to disqualify any competitor for infringement of the regulations.
  8. A cloud link will be emailed to each participating school containing their performances and adjudication after the festival is complete.
  9. Age verification – dancers must be prepared to provide age verification (a birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other appropriate documents) if asked for by the adjudicator or the Festival Committee. If verification is not provided, they may be disqualified from competition.
  1. There will be absolutely no prompting by anyone including instructors.  Instructors are allowed backstage to help their dancers find their correct stage position
