Day 6 – Choose five of the following learning opportunities to do today!

As you work through these activities, please be mindful of your personal health and well-being as well as that of those around you.  Be safe, work with an adult when possible/necessary, and practice social distancing.

Reread a favorite book.  

Write down your opinion of the story.  What was your favorite part of the story? What did you think about the characters?  Would you recommend this book to someone?

Using the digits 1 to 9 at most one time each, fill in the boxes to make the difference equal to 39.

Write down three questions you have about why monk seals  have fins, but dogs do not.

People communicate in many

different ways.  They use letters, email, telephones, cell phones, and computers.  Draw a picture and write several sentences telling about the different ways you communicate with others.

Write your own story where you are the main character.  

The story can be about something that happened to you or a made up story.  Use your imagination.

Create a test that adds and subtracts 2-digit numbers.

Give the test to your parents or caregiver. Check the test to see how many items they get correct.

Take a walk around your house, or outside if possible.  Look for examples of different plants and animals.  

Represent what you saw through writing a song, choreographing a dance, or creating a piece of art.

Get an adult to help you make a timeline of your life. On the top  of a piece of  paper write in the year that you were born.  At the bottom write 2020.  Divide the paper into even sections for each year between your birth and now.  In each section write down things that happened in that year.

Watch PBS for Kids shows (Channel 11)  that develop literacy skills.

  • Word Girl – 3:30 p.m. daily    Each episode introduces up to four new vocabulary words in an engaging, humorous way.

Create your own game board with directions and rules.  

Think about:

  • How many people can play
  • Where do players start and end
  • How will they move spaces (e.g., roll a dice, pick a card)
  • What are the rules

With a deck of cards using only 1-9 (use A as 1), or with a deck of Uno cards (numbers only), evenly distribute cards so that each person has 3 piles, face down.  Flip the top two cards and read the 3-digit number. The person with the highest number wins the hand.  

Variation – Allow players to rearrange the flipped cards to make the largest number possible.

Think of a question you have about how wind and water change the land.  Design an experiment to find out the answer to that question.  Describe your experiment in writing and drawings.  You can, but don’t have to, try your experiment.

Have someone read to you about Rachel Carson. Find  three things that make her important to us today and write her a letter thanking her for them.

Find a book, magazine or newspaper and read for 20-30 minutes.

Skip count by 10s starting at 20 until you get to 60 and write down the numbers as you say them. Add all five numbers together. Write your number sentence.

Create a map that shows your route to school or to another place you often go. Be sure to include buildings and roads. Label your map.

Personal information identifies who we are, where we live, and how family, friends and others can find us to talk to us or come over and visit us. It can help us communicate with others, but we have to be careful with that information when on the computer.  Watch this video and talk with adults about sharing your personal information.

Take a virtual tour to the Seattle Aquarium.  Discuss with someone what you saw and learned.  

Your friend thinks that you cannot add up three numbers to get 25.  He thinks it only works with two numbers. Is he right or wrong?

Write a letter or draw a picture to show him your answer.

Draw a picture of yourself as a chemist, a person who wonders about and investigates what matter is made of and how matter changes.

In your picture, include the questions you are asking about and exploring.

Help our environment! Make a simple household cleaner.

Look on this site and find the simple household cleaner that has only two ingredients.  Have an adult help you make it and do some cleaning!

Think about the best day you ever had.  Share your story with someone.  Be sure to tell them what happened in the order of the events and include as many details as possible.

Write your numbers from 1-20. Circle the even numbers with red. Color the odd numbers green.

Share your questions with a friend or family member.

Talk with an older family

member about your community. How has it changed? How is it the same? Draw two pictures. Label one ”Then” showing how your community looked in the past. Label the other “Now” showing how your community looks in the present.

Using objects in your home, act out a familiar story,  Change your voice for each character.

Have someone read to you about the Legislative Branch of the United States Government. Make a poster that shows the two most important things it does.  Explain your choices to the person who helped you.

Play the “What if..” game with someone. Take turns asking each other “What if…” questions.
