Overview:

Snow Leopards are very shy carnivores and the highest probability of spotting them is in the peak winters (Dec – March), when they are likely to venture out often during the mating season. In summers, they retreat above the tree line in to high altitude alpine meadows and rocky areas.

Snow leopards prey mainly on Blue Sheep and Ibex and supplementing their diet with other livestock, Marmot, Pika, Hares, Rodents and Birds. The cat can camouflage so brilliantly that it is easy for it to disappear. Locals often refer to it as “The Mountain Ghost”.

The expedition for The Grey Ghost is spread across 10 including 4 days of exploring the home for exotic fauna which can be spotted in winters ranging from exotic birds, reptiles and mammals which include Tibetan Wolves, Snow Finches, Eurasian Golden Orioles, and Red-Fronted Rosefinch etc. The Pin Valley National Park is home to Himalayan Ibex as well.

After visiting some of the ancient villages of Kinnaur and Spiti, we will spend a night in Langza, one of the highest villages in the world, before we base ourselves in Kibber, an ancient high altitude Spitian Village. The world’s highest wildlife sanctuary falls in Kibber. We will stay in a heritage style traditional homestay here.

We will spend 4 days in the Kibber wildlife sanctuary covering villages of Ki, Kibber, Tashigong, Pinjoor, Chicham etc exploring and scouting for the elusive Snow Leopard along with other exotic wildlife. The next few days, we will hike around the ridge lines and the wildlife sanctuary.

This trip is essentially a photography expedition to Spiti and Kinnaur. we would be visiting truly remote villages in Spiti and Kinnaur to spot the Snow Leopard in its natural habitat. It is an experience combining a challenging road trip and through the incredibly beautiful snow clad mountains and valleys of Kinnaur and Spiti and snow hikes in the high altitude snow covered desert of Spiti mountains

Conduct of the Trip;

The guests are requested to assemble at a common meeting point - Himachal Bhawan, New Delhi at 5:00 am. The guests will be driven straight to Narkanda in a luxury SUV after a break for breakfast enroute. Tonight would be a good opportunity to meet all team members and know the Dos’ and Don'ts’ of the trip. We will stay overnight in a luxury 3 Star hotel.

The vehicles will leave the next day for Tabo and, drive through some spectacular landscape. From Tabo we will head on to our favorite village Langza. the next day we’ll visit Hikkim, Komic and Tashigong before reaching Kibber, where we will be stationed for a few days. From here, we’ll drive to various scenic photography spots in the valley.

As winters can be harsh and very unpredictable in Spiti, a sub-support team comprising of a guide, cook, kitchen staff and other support staff will move ahead of us, a day in advance. This is done to ensure that when the guests arrive after an aggressive drive in chilling weather conditions, all service levels are taken care of and any contingency situation can be handled well in time. A support vehicle with a driver, mechanic, extra help for situations and first-aid provisions will move with the vehicle of the guests.

After reaching Kibber, we will stay in one of the most charming and comfortable homestay here. We will base ourselves in Kibber and the altitude here can require some time to get used to. It would be a good idea to acclimatize here. We will go for the spotting excursion around Kibber and in Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary and return to the homestay in Kibber for the night. We will meet the local spotters and guides engaged in the excursion. A dedicated personal porter per guest will be at service to provide individual attention. As the conditions can get very rough here and it may not be very comfortable for all to walk in the snow with baggage, the porters will be happy to deliver the highest levels of personalised service throughout your stay here. The spotting excursion will commence early morning after breakfast basis the intelligence gathered by the spotters about the areas where the leopard would be most likely to be spotted.  The guides and spotters will use as walkie-talkies to communicate with each other and to relay information about the movement of the cat, binoculars for clear and easy spotting, luxury shelter tents for the guests while waiting and to relax peacefully after the long walks in the snow and refresh themselves, packed lunches, hot beverages and of course emergency first-aid.

Medical Emergency: In case of medical emergencies or high altitude sickness, Kaza is just couple of hours away and Shimla is within a day’s reach to the government hospitals. there would be a wilderness first aid and first responder certified guide with us with all basic first aid.

The trip will be facilitated by a team of highly trained and experienced professionals, guides and spotters along with expert drivers and porters & cooks and helpers whose focus is to ensure that you have a comfortable and a memorable experience and take away some great imprints of the unique and rare Himalayan wildlife and culture.
