UCSC Instructional Modes

UCSC’s Instructional Modes and considerations therein are defined in detail by the following: Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) and  Graduate Council (GC) Policy on UC Santa Cruz Undergraduate and Graduate Online and Hybrid Courses

In Person:

Courses which are offered in-person by the primary instructor, at either the UCSC Main Campus, Coastal Biology campus, or an external location. For courses that have secondary sections (discussions or secondary labs), most will be held in person, though some may offer secondary sections via online instruction such as through Zoom. Please carefully check the day, time, and location for all class meetings.

Asynchronous Online:

Courses that are characterized by their reliance on lectures, engagement activities, assessments, or other course materials that are pre-recorded and carefully pre-planned for students who will have minimal (or no) face-to-face, real-time interactions. Asynchronous courses generally do not have set meeting times at the time of enrollment, but please note that they may have some required timed meetings. While most secondary sections (discussions/labs) for online courses are also offered online, some classes may require in-person attendance in the secondary section. Please carefully check the day, time, and location for all class meetings.

Courses listed under the Asynchronous Online modality that have “Online” as the meeting location have been approved by the Academic Senate Committee on Courses of Instruction (CCI) for online instruction. A small number of courses may also be offered through Remote Instruction (see definition below). These classes can be identified by the location “Remote Instruction”.

Hybrid:

Courses that include multiple modalities in the primary class meeting, in most cases a mix of in-person and online instruction. For instance, a hybrid course may meet in person on Tuesday, and then online on Thursday. Each student is expected to participate in both formats (in person and online meetings). Students should expect to attend in-person class meetings in person as online options for attendance via Zoom may not be available. For courses that have secondary sections (discussions or labs), meetings may be held either in person or online. Please carefully check the day, time, and location for all class meetings.

Synchronous Online:

Courses that are characterized by their use of video communications software such as Zoom to facilitate real-time interaction with students in the primary class meeting. Please note that while most secondary sections (discussions/labs) for online courses are also offered online, some classes may require in-person attendance in the secondary section.

Courses listed under the Synchronous Online modality that have “Online” as the meeting location have been approved by the Academic Senate Committee on Courses of Instruction (CCI) for online instruction. A small number of courses may also be offered through Remote Instruction, by special exception. These classes can be identified by the location “Remote Instruction”. Please carefully check the day, time, and location for all class meetings.

* Remote Instruction:

Remote instruction, which emerged on a large scale in March 2020 as “emergency remote instruction,” refers to the type of instruction that is primarily being offered during the current pandemic and will be used during significant campus disruptions in the future. This includes courses that would normally be taught in person but are being offered remotely due to a critical access issue. The majority of these courses have not gone through the Academic Senate’s formal process for course approval to be taught in an online format and are being taught in a remote format during the pandemic only. Courses being taught during this period of remote instruction are commonly synchronous (Zoom-based offerings) with set course meeting times, but these courses may also incorporate asynchronous materials such as pre-recorded lectures.
