Mission

The Smithfield Public Schools will provide PK-12 students with a balanced, diverse, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in music.

Philosophy

Content‌ ‌Standards‌ ‌

In‌ ‌January‌ ‌2017,‌ ‌Rhode‌ ‌Island‌ ‌officially‌ ‌adopted‌ ‌the‌ ‌‌National‌ ‌Core‌ ‌Arts‌ ‌Standards‌ ‌for‌ ‌Music‌.‌ ‌

The‌ ‌standards‌ ‌are‌ ‌centered‌ ‌around‌ ‌Creating(Cr),‌ ‌Performing/Presenting/Producing(Pr),‌ ‌

Responding(Re),‌ ‌and‌ ‌Connecting(Cn)‌ ‌through‌ ‌eleven‌ ‌specific‌ ‌anchor‌ ‌standards.‌  ‌The‌ ‌standards‌ ‌

support‌ ‌a‌ ‌unified,‌ ‌high‌ ‌quality‌ ‌and‌ ‌sequential‌ ‌music‌ ‌education‌ ‌for‌ ‌students‌ ‌from‌ ‌

pre-kindergarten‌ ‌through‌ ‌twelfth‌ ‌grade.‌ ‌

  • What are the basic finger positions on guitar and beginning musical elements that you should know as a musician?

Instructional Planning and Delivery

Target Vocabulary - Strumming, chords, frets, string numberings, parts of guitar (bridge, sound hole, neck), rhythm, melody, harmony and scales.  

Common Learning Experiences

  • Learn how to tune own guitar
  • Introduce first three notes (E, F, G) on string 1, string 2 (B,C, D) and string 3 ( G, A, B)
  • Play alone and together in an ensemble setting
  • Accompany simple melodies
  • Play basic 8 note scales (G, D and F)
  • Sight read simple melodies and harmonies

Topical:

  • What are the first 3 notes on all 6 strings and the fingering positions?
  • How do we play a major scales using whole step and half steps?  What are the necessary accidentals needed for the major scales G, D, F and Bb?
  • How do we help improve technique on the guitar through the use of PIMA (pulgar, index, middle and anular)  fingering technique and arpeggio playing?
  • How do we create a small solo or duet with basic musical elements using a composition program?

  • Extend note reading to the first 5 frets on each string, intermediate strumming patterns, advanced rhythms, finger positions on frets, major and minor chords chords, power chords, chromatic scales, advanced  key signatures and simple meter signatures. Compose a simple melody with 8 -12 measures using the knowledge learned in class.  

Skills: (Students will be able to…)

  • Demonstrate the ability to play melodies and harmonies with the first 5 notes on each string.  Use a variety of strumming patterns to accompany simple melodies.  Play duets and trios in an ensemble setting.  Demonstrate power chords with a variety of songs.  Using a composition program, compose a simple melody with 8-12 measures in a simple meter.
