Operational Policies

Attendance & Lateness

How do students do well in school? They go every day! Did you know that a student with 90% attendance has missed one month of school by the end of the year? You may miss school for illness, emergencies, or for religious reasons, but we want to see every student in school every day.

Here are some basic things you should know about attendance in New York City schools:

Lateness:

Being at school on time is crucial, but it is always better to come to school late than to miss the whole day.

Distraction-Free Learning Policy for Internet-Enabled Personal Devices

Dear Families,

In alignment with New York State legislation enacted by Governor Kathy Hochul and Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, all public schools are now required to implement a Distraction-Free Learning Policy that limits student access to internet-enabled personal devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and similar technology—during the instructional day.

Here at Legacy School of the Arts, we are committed to fostering a focused, safe, and engaging academic environment for all learners. Beginning September 4th 2025, students will no longer be permitted to access or store internet-enabled devices in their bookbags or on their person during the school day.

Dismissal

Students will be dismissed at 3:10pm on Mon-Thur. and at 12pm on Fridays. Once you are dismissed from your 8th period class, all students must walk down stairwell C and exit through the side exit. As you exit the building, your Yondr pouch will be unlocked and you will have access to your Smartphone and/or Smartwatch. Students who are being picked up will wait in front of the building with a staff member.

Door Alarms

There are several doors in our building that have alarms and cannot be opened other than during an activity (i.e., evacuation or drill). DO NOT open alarmed doors, as they will sound immediately and alert school staff of inappropriate entry and/or exit. Always enter and exit through the doors designated under “Entering the Building” and “Dismissal”.

Entering the Building

Students may enter through the main entrance no earlier than 7:30a.m. Upon entrance, you must adhere to a temperature check and show proof of your completed DOE Buildings Health Screening. Once cleared, proceed through the Legacy entrance door (located to the left of school safety), lock your Yondr pouch and proceed to the cafeteria (before 8am) or your first class.

Evacuations & Lockdown

Safety is a priority at Legacy. In the event of an evacuation, which requires relocating away from the building, students are sent to sites that will be outlined in the School Safety Plan.  To ensure that we are ready for any emergency, there will be unannounced fire drills throughout the school year.  It is extremely important that you take these drills seriously. We have a mandatory, zero-tolerance, NO TALKING policy from beginning to end of the drill.  Any student found not following instructions will have a mandated conference with the Student-Life Coordinator.

In case of an emergency, following directions are critical to your safety and you will not be able to hear directions if you are talking. During ANY drill or evacuation, Legacy students must adhere to the following:

Hall Passes

You should be in class and learning at all times.  If you need to travel to another location, Legacy students must have a pass with them anytime they are in the hallway. This includes visiting the restroom, main office, nurses’ office, Student-Life office, principal’s office, assistant principals office, or teachers classroom. If you are stopped by an adult and asked to present your pass, you must do so. If you do not have a pass, you will be sent back to class to obtain one.

Upon returning to class, please make sure to sanitize and then return the pass directly to its designated area in that classroom.  It’s for your safety! During COVID-19, you must stay 6 feet away from all people in the hallway, stairway, and bathrooms.

Nurse Pass

If you are feeling unwell, you should stay home. However, if you are in school and begin feeling ill or need medical attention please inform your teacher or the nearest Legacy staff member. They will write you a Legacy Nurse Pass and ensure that you obtain medical attention.

MetroCard (OMNY)

Metrocards will be distributed to eligible students at the start of the school.  You can immediately use your student MetroCard at every subway and local bus. Metrocards will be distributed during Mic Check.  If you are late to or absent from Mic Check, you must pick up your metrocard from the main office during lunch ONLY.

Student MetroCards are:

***If Your Card is Lost or Stolen

Report lost or stolen school MetroCards to the main office. Your school will deactivate the missing card and provide a new one.

Plagiarism

Your word is the most important asset you will ever own. If you earn the trust of others, you become someone valued in the community. If you lose their trust, it takes dedication to win it back. Plagiarism is taking the ideas or writings of others and presenting them as if they were your own. This includes copying information found on the internet and not citing where you got the information from.

At Legacy, there is a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism.  If you represent work or ideas belonging to another as your own, you will receive an automatic zero and be required to complete the assignment on your own. Additionally, you may lose the trust of your teachers, your family, and your peers. Further consequences may be implemented accordingly.
