    DAILY SCHEDULE

Southridge follows the block schedule below. There are four class periods that meet each day for 90 minutes. One period on "even" days, called seminar period, provides 90 minutes of additional time for interventions and academic support. The seminar class period provides time for homework or for students to access specific subject area help. Students are assigned to a seminar based on their academic needs. Seminars last approximately six weeks, and there are three rotations of seminar topics per semester. Sample seminar topic areas include credit recovery, math support, PE make-ups, Spanish practice, writing center support and study hall. Advisory will also take place during the seminar class period on “even” days.  Through advisory, students have the opportunity to connect with a student teacher who serves as a mentor for four years to support students navigate SRHS and beyond.  Schoolwide assemblies are usually held on Fridays throughout the school year.

*Which lunch students attend is determined by the location of their 5th or 6th period classes.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS

Academic Honesty

The Southridge community expects of its students the highest standards of honesty and integrity.  Please note that plagiarism (representing someone else’s work as your own) can result in loss of credit for the assignment and could also result in disciplinary action.  Please visit this website to review the district’s AI Use guidelines.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICES/CELL PHONES, ETC.

Cell phones, music, headphones, and similar electronic devices must be off and away during school hours, including lunch and passing time.

Cell phones and electronic devices are NEVER permitted in restrooms or locker rooms. Cell phones and electronic devices may be used before and after school.

Phones and earbuds will be confiscated if they are out during school time. Student will receive a receipt and the phone will be kept in the office until after school. Student may retrieve their phone from the front office. On the third or more time, the phone will be kept in the principal’s office and a parent must meet with the principal in order to get the phone back.

Parents and students can make easy contact with each other via the front office; therefore, it’s not advised for students to bring phones to school. The school is not responsible for lost or damaged devices.

Academic Integrity Policy

The academic integrity policy was developed in an effort to foster, teach and encourage appropriate and ethical behavior. Academic integrity includes acts or attempted acts of cheating by which a student deceives, acts dishonestly, or misrepresents work that they have produced on an academic exercise, or assisting another to misrepresent their work. Below are the key elements of the policy that deserve emphasis and attention.

Cheating includes, but is not limited to:

Plagiarism is one of the most common forms of cheating but can be easily avoided.  Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

Range of Consequences

Additional consequences may be administered under the BSD Student and Family Handbook.

Advisory

Advisory is a grade-level grouping of about 25 students that meets during seminar, every other week, for curriculum or other school-related activities. Students are assigned to Advisory by grade level.

While teachers serve as mentors, students receive guidance on how to be successful in high school and beyond.  Additionally, advisory will monitor students’ progress towards meeting the Career Education graduation requirements and to grant Career Education credit upon completion of required activities. The activities also help students meet the state's Career Related Learning Standards and the Extended Application requirement.

The Beaverton School District has adopted a curriculum for social emotional learning that will be taught through Advisory lessons.  The Character Strong curriculum will be provided for all grade levels this school year.

Advisory grades of Satisfactory (S), Unsatisfactory (U), or Incomplete (I) are assigned.  Attendance is recorded and parents/guardians will be sent a progress report or report card with grade and attendance information.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance line: 503-356-2891

Regular attendance is critical for student success. Parents/Guardians should call the school before 9:00 a.m. on the day of their student's absence(s) in order to excuse them.  Students are expected to attend and be on time to class each day. Any student leaving school early must check-out with the attendance office secretary prior to leaving campus.  Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.

Parents/Guardians may also send a note with their student to excuse them the following day after an absence, though they will have received the automated call the night before alerting them of an unexcused absence.

Excused Absence:  Illness, family emergencies, religious observances, and school-related activities documented by parent/guardian, doctor, or school.

Unexcused Absence: Absence other than the preceding that has not been approved by parent, guardian, or school. (Note: recreation, haircuts, sleeping in, running home for books, etc., are not considered excused).

Students who “skip” class will face disciplinary consequences based on the BSD Student Parent Resource Handbook. Consequences range from administrative intervention to suspension.

Tardy/late: Arriving to class after class has started.  Students have five minutes to pass between classes. Tardiness can result in: 1st offense) verbal warning; 2nd offense) contact home; 3rd offense) after-school detention; and 4th offense) referral to an administrator. Students with 9 or more tardies in a week will be assigned Saturday School.

Make-Up Work

Make-up work for an excused absence is to be completed within the time agreed upon between teacher and student (normally one day for each excused absence). Students who are absent may also email teachers for class information. Homework is not generally collected by the school for pick up due to the short turnaround.

Pre-Arranged Absence

If an absence of more than three days is known about in advance, students need to obtain a pre-arranged absence form at the attendance desk to help excuse the absence.

For serious illness or extended medical absences, please contact the student’s counselor. Communication may need to be ongoing with both teachers and the counselor to see what accommodations can be made about homework, grades, etc.

Oregon law (ORS 339.250, OAR 581-23-006) requires schools to inactivate students from school rolls, no matter what the excuse is, if they are absent for 10 consecutive days.  This does not mean that students are dropped from school, however. Parents will need to re-activate their child's enrollment upon return.

Academic Improvement Eligibility Program for Athletics & Activities

Any student who wishes to participate in an OSAA-sanctioned sport or any other athletic team that competes for Southridge and any student who wishes to participate in an activity that is competitive, considered extracurricular, the general public is invited to watch, and/or for which an admission is charged must conform to the OSAA and District Rules of eligibility, and must have the minimum credits towards graduation.  Participating students must also be enrolled and pass five classes in a semester.

At the beginning of the year, all ninth graders are eligible to participate during the first six (6) weeks.  Students entering their second year at high school must have earned four (4) credits towards graduation.  Students entering their third year of high school must have earned 9.5 credits towards graduation, or five (5) credits during the previous 12 months preceding the first day of the current school year.  Students entering their fourth year must have earned sixteen (16) credits towards graduation, or five (5) credits during the previous 12 months preceding the first day of the current school year.

After the first six weeks and 12 weeks of each semester, a grade check will be conducted for all students involved in athletics or activities.  Eligibility is linked to academic success in classes. An ineligible student may practice with the team or group but cannot participate in competition or performance.

Note that if students become ineligible, an Academic Support Program contract may be put in place to encourage a student’s academic success. Anyone who is on an Academic Support Program contract will work directly with the athletic director to maintain their eligibility.

Other eligibility items to note include:

All Southridge students must also meet the following additional requirements in order to participate in athletics and/or activities:

A student must practice with their team in order to represent Southridge. Each student must attend all practices unless excused by the coach/advisor.  In order to participate in practice or a contest, the participant must attend school the full day of such practice or contest.  Any exceptions must be cleared through the Athletic Director or an administrator.

Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Rules

The use, possession, or distribution of tobacco, alcohol, or other non-prescription drugs is unacceptable for any participant in interscholastic athletics or activities, whether during regular school hours or non-school time. This includes knowingly remaining in a place where underage students use or sell alcohol or illegal substances.

First Violation Tobacco: Conference to suspension.  In addition, the athlete will be unable to practice or participate in competition for up to ten days.

First Violation Alcohol/Drugs:   Suspension or expulsion with the additional requirement that the athlete may be required to have a chemical abuse assessment from an approved outside assessor at the parents’ expense.

Second Violation: Removal of the athlete from the team for the remainder of the current sports season or for the following sports season, if the infraction occurs during the last two weeks of the semester.  In addition, if the student is expelled, he/she will be removed from the team  and will not be allowed to participate again until the expulsion is over.

Community Sponsored Sports

Community Sponsored Sports provide opportunities for Southridge students. Information on District or community athletic programs may be obtained from the coaches or the Southridge Athletic Director, Trisha Shoemaker.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL INFORMATION

Back-to-school information is provided here. This is general information from the school district, and is not specific to Southridge High School.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

The school district provides bus transportation for students. Students must follow the rules governing riding buses or they may forfeit their right to ride the school bus.  Please note that there are to be no balloons on the school buses. (See the Beaverton Student Parent Resource Handbook.)  There is no school bus service within 1.5 miles of the school.

CHROMEBOOKS

All students are issued a Chromebook laptop at Southridge. Students can use this device to engage in learning across the curriculum, enhance literacy, improve communication, and develop better digital citizenship. Having a Chromebook is a privilege that comes with responsibility. Like textbooks issued to students, the use and care of a Chromebook is the responsibility of the student. Details about the Chromebook and district programs to cover theft, loss, or damage are on our District Future Ready Chromebook Resources website. Students who wish to bring their own laptop may do so. (In that case, students would submit a form to opt out of paying the Damage / Loss Protection Plan fee. Please see the bookkeeper.)

At the beginning of each school year, all students are automatically enrolled in the District’s Chromebook Damage/Loss Protection Program. The fee for enrolling in the program is $20 per school year per Chromebook. This fee is charged to the student’s account at the beginning of each year. The fee for the Damage/Loss Protection Program is waived for families who qualify for the free or reduced meal benefits program. But, this will only be automatically waived if families have elected to share this information by filling out the Sharing Free Or Reduced Price Information form during the annual Meal Applications process.

Students/Families need to complete the Digital Resources Permissions Form to have a district email account that enables them to log in to a Chromebook.

It is important that students pay the fee for the Damage/Loss Protection Program as soon as possible to ensure that they are financially protected in the case of a damage or loss incident. Students who have not paid the fee are not eligible to be covered by the program benefits. Families can use the District’s Online Payment System to pay this and other fees and fines.

CLOSED CAMPUS

The safety of students is a top priority of Southridge High School and the Beaverton School District. That is one reason that we have a closed campus. During school hours, students must remain on school property and be in attendance in their assigned classes.

Students may leave campus prior to the end of their assigned school day provided they check out through the Attendance desk in the main office PRIOR to leaving campus.  Parents/guardians are not able to excuse students to leave for lunch. Being off campus will result in being assigned to a disciplinary consequence.

Trespassing or loitering by non-students is not permitted. Non-students who do not check in at the main office and receive administrative permission to be on campus can receive a Trespass Notice, be escorted off campus, and instructed not to return to school property. Law enforcement may be called regarding those individuals who fail to cooperate.

Students are not able to bring friends or relatives with them to school as visitors.

DANCES

Please take the time to read and discuss the following expectations regarding dances at Southridge High School. Our goal is to have dances that provide an enjoyable and safe experience for students who choose to attend.

All dances take place at Southridge, with the exception of Prom. Prom will be held at an off-site location in downtown Portland. Prom is a junior-senior event; freshmen or sophomores who attend do so as the guest of a junior or senior. (One guest per dance, and the junior/senior must accompany their guest to the dance.)

Dance Attire

We ask students to present themselves in good taste at our dances. At our dances, especially our formal dances (Homecoming and Prom), we ask that students do not wear sweats, jeans, cut-off shorts, or basketball shorts.  If your family is in need of assistance with formal clothes for dances, please let a counselor know as we have access to organizations that assist with dresses and men’s attire.

Dancing Behavior

Southridge takes the following steps to control overly suggestive dancing (“grinding”).

  1. Students will be issued a wristband to wear as they are admitted to dances. Students who are dancing inappropriately will have their wrist band cut off after one offense and will be asked to leave after a second. Students who are asked to leave the dance will not receive a refund.
  2. Students who are removed from a dance for inappropriate dancing will not be able to attend the next dance.
  3. Music selection will vary to ensure that the dance contains not just music that might lend itself to inappropriate dancing.
  4. A list of explicit songs will be created that DJ’s will not be allowed to play.
  5. Music will be stopped periodically if there is a need to interrupt the dance.
  6. Chaperones, including administrators, will be present to ensure that dancing is appropriate.  We ask that both students and parents address this issue prior to dances so that all parties can enjoy the evening without incident.

Alcohol or Drug Use

We make every attempt to ensure that all students who attend our dances or athletic events are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  Note that the school administration reserves the right to require students to take a breath alcohol test prior to being admitted to a dance; refusal to comply will result in not being admitted. Parents: Please take the time to talk with your children about the concerns, liabilities and hazards of alcohol consumption or drug use before and after dances.  We cannot tackle this challenge alone, and we hope that you can assist us with this discussion at home.

In the event that someone is found to have used alcohol or illegal substances prior to a dance or be in possession of an illegal substance, the expectations in the BSD Student and Family Handbook will be followed.

DISTRICT HEALTH CLINIC

The School-Based Health Center (SBHC), located next to Beaverton High School, serves student health needs by providing a comprehensive health care facility open to all students in the Beaverton School District. The SBHC has a licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant and a mental health therapist on staff, plus a dental hygienist.

The SBHC can bill most private health insurance plans and may collect a co-pay at the time of a visit. Oregon Health Plan (OHP) is also accepted. For students without insurance, the SBHC will assess if they are eligible for a discounted fee, based on income; families that earn less will pay less. Appointments are preferred, but if there is an urgent need, students can walk in. More information and scheduling is available at 503-356-3985.

DRESS CODE

While student dress is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian, dress guidelines are necessary in order to protect the health and safety of the school environment, to foster students’ success and to avoid disruptions to the school environment. Students shall follow the guidelines that follow for all school-sponsored activities, including athletic events. Appropriate dress for school dances, graduation activities, and other special events will be communicated to parents and students by the school. Southridge may prohibit any attire that is disruptive to the educational process.

ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE NOTICE

The District may use electronic devices in public areas of District property to ensure the health, welfare and safety of all students, staff, and visitors. Video cameras may be used in locations as deemed appropriate by the administration.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

An important part of having a safe school is a uniform classroom response to an incident at school. Fires, weather events or earthquakes, accidents, or intruders are scenarios that are planned and trained for throughout the school year. Emergency drills are held every month. Sometimes they are announced, sometimes not.

If you become aware of a threat toward the school or an individual, via social media or other source, contact campus security or the office immediately.

HOLD: In your room or area.  Clear the halls.

SECURE: Get Inside. Lock outside doors.

LOCKDOWN: Locks, lights, out of sight.

EVACUATE: To the announced location.

SHELTER: Using the announced hazard and strategy.

Hold

Hold means staff and students need to clear the hallways and remain in their area or room until the "all clear" is announced.  During a hold, doors are closed and locked, students are accounted for and it is business as usual inside the area or room.  If the students are outside, they will remain as such until the "all clear" is announced or brought to a clear location until they are able to return to their class.

Secure

Secure means there is a possible threat outside the school. Most often, this is due to police activity in the area or the neighborhood. Police might be searching for a suspect in a crime, or someone might have spotted a person wanted for questioning. During a secure, it is business as usual inside the building. If students are at recess, or outside for some reason, they are brought inside, the doors are locked and classes continue. The District does not typically send out parent notifications for lockouts, since they are most often due to police activity in the neighborhood and are usually resolved quickly.

Lockdown

Lockdown means there is a possible threat inside the school. This is not business as usual. Hallways are cleared, classroom and office doors are locked, lights are turned out. Students and staff are instructed to stay quiet and out of sight.

All of our schools can be put in secure or lockdown at the touch of a button. A message with instructions will then play over the school's intercom system.

During a secure or lockdown, do not call or go to the school. Doing so could put you or others in danger. Do not call or text the student’s cell phone. This may put them in danger. The District will communicate with you once we have more information to share. Reliable information and updates can be viewed on the school and District webpages. The Public Safety Office puts a pop-up message with links or more information, when it is available. If further action is needed on the part of parents and guardians, the District will communicate that information with instructions through Parent Square and the District webpage.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

All Southridge students are encouraged to participate in the varied extracurricular activities sponsored by the school. Students attending activities sponsored by the school will follow rules and regulations that apply during the regular school day. The activity programs include athletics, drama and speech rehearsals, band, choir, music rehearsals, work on school publications, club meetings and field trips.

Student Leadership/Student Government

Leadership students are selected through an application process during the spring semester.  Students will choose a committee to participate in during their membership.  Student Government students are selected through an application and voting process.  All candidates must complete an application and run for office in a week-long election process.  Each grade level selects a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and a Representative. In addition, there are overall ASB (Associated Study Body) officers. The Student Body officers are in charge of specific committees.

FEES

There are no tuition fees to attend Southridge. Other optional fees are below. Additionally, there is a student online payment system in place. The InTouch online payment system will allow parents to make payments for students at multiple schools at the same time as well as view all payment history for a family. In addition, there is a system in place to apply the free and reduced waiver information to allow for tiered pricing in certain situations. Using a Visa debit or credit card, parents and guardians can make online payments for their students with no transaction fees. To access the system, users will need a ParentVue username and password.  If you don’t have a ParentVue account, contact the office for an Activation Key Code.  (Once the ParentVue account is created, it may take up to 24 hours for the account to be activated.)

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)

At the high school level, once a student turns 18, all the rights that once belonged to his or her parents transfer to the student. However, a high school may still provide an eligible student’s parents with access to education records, without the student’s consent, if the student is claimed as a dependent for IRS tax purposes. Other exceptions to FERPA’s general consent rule may also apply, such as disclosures to parents or emergency responders in a health or safety emergency. Another exception is the disclosure of “directory information”. FERPA defines “directory information” as information that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Examples of directory information include:

If you do not want Southridge High School to disclose directory information from your child’s education records without your prior written consent, you must annually notify the school in writing within the first two weeks of school.

GRADUATION

Students must complete at least 24 units of credit plus the required state testing to graduate. Southridge High School’s graduation requirements are found in the Academic Program Planning Guide, located on our school website. Only those seniors who have successfully completed all of the requirements for a high school diploma may participate in commencement exercises. Students who have not met the district’s diploma or certificate requirements will not be permitted to take part in graduation exercises. Additionally, students may be denied participation in graduation exercises for violation of Board policies or school rules. Graduation’s date for this year is still in discussion and will be announced soon. Graduation is at Southridge High School.

HEALTH ROOM

Students who are injured or become ill while attending school are referred to the health room where a secretary will attempt to contact the parents to arrange for the student to be taken home. Students must check in with a main office secretary when they report to the health room.

HONORS RECOGNITION

Southridge has several programs that allow students to challenge themselves academically and also be recognized. The programs recognize academically well-rounded students who have pushed themselves to excel in a challenging four-year educational program.  Four such programs are:

  1. Career Pathways – Each Career Academy/Pathway has specific ways in which students can complete a senior project and individualize their academic program.
  2. Southridge Scholar honors recognition –  Details and an application for this honors recognition will be available on our website for 12th graders, and are due to students’ counselors by Dec. 1.
  3. International Baccalaureate Program – The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a comprehensive program for 11th & 12th graders who want high academic standards and intellectual rigor. Students are encouraged to take one or more IB courses even if they are not IB Diploma candidates.
  4. National Honor Society – an organization to recognize students based upon scholarship, leadership, service and character. Students apply at the end of their sophomore or junior years.

More information about all of the above is on our school website. See our IB Coordinator for more information about our IB program.

ID CARDS

Students must have an ID card to verify that they are members of the Southridge student body.  The first card is free; replacement cards are $5.  ID cards must be shown for admission to school events and when checking out material from the library.

INSURANCE

An accident insurance program is provided and made available to all students by the District.  This is strictly an accident insurance plan that provides secondary coverage or prorating if other health insurance plans are carried.  All students who participate in athletic programs are required to have this insurance or give evidence of comparable coverage.  Insurance applications are available in the main office.

LIBRARY

The library is open from 7:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. on most school days.  Students may use the library during and after school most days to check out a variety of print materials by presenting their current student ID card. The library houses print materials and computers through which students may access resources online.

LOCKERS

Southridge has a limited number of lockers for students. An application for a locker is available at Flight Day (Preview Day), August 17th.  Additional forms may be picked up from the registrar in the Lower Counseling Office.  Students who agree to share a locker with another student will be guaranteed a locker.  Students who are assigned a locker should:

  1. Be sure the locker is closed and locked after each use.
  2. Not leave wallets or other valuable items in lockers.
  3. Not share their combination with anyone.

The school will not be responsible for any missing, damaged, or stolen property from the student’s locker. This also applies to gym and after school athletic lockers.

Lockers remain under the jurisdiction of the District even when assigned to an individual student. Should there be a defect with a student’s locker, the student should report it to campus security or a custodian. The District reserves the right to inspect all lockers. Searches of lockers may be conducted at any time there is reasonable suspicion to do so, whether or not a student is present.

LOST & FOUND

Any articles found in the school or on district grounds should be turned in to the main office.  Unclaimed articles are donated to a charitable clothing organization at the end of each month.

Suspected theft of personal or district property should be reported to campus security.

MEAL PRICES

Prices for the 2025-2026 year are:

Breakfast:               free

Lunch:                   free

Supper:           free     T, W, TH served after 4:00pm

For more information please check the BSD Nutrition Services website or call (503) 356-3955.  The prices are also displayed on the menus. Parents may deposit money into their child’s lunch account; the meal account is a debit-style account. Confidential free and reduced price lunch applications are available online or in the school office. Note: The Oregon Legislature is again paying for the cost of Reduced-Price meals, so students eligible for those meals will not pay anything for either breakfast or lunch. See the link above to apply. While meals this year are free, it’s advised for families to fill out the forms in order to qualify for other discounts and reductions in fees.

Eating Areas -- Please work to keep our school clean and presentable.  All food and drink needs to be confined to non-carpeted areas.  Also, please dispose of your food and drink in the appropriate waste or recycling container.

MEDICATION

All prescription medication needs to be checked into the health room by a parent/guardian. (See District Policy JHCD/JHCDA) Students are not allowed to carry any medications with them without written permission from the main office. If permission is granted, students may have in their possession only the amount of medication needed for that school day. Sharing and/or borrowing of medication with another student is strictly prohibited. Students could face disciplinary consequences if these procedures are not followed.  The administering of any prescription or non-prescription medicine by staff to students requires the parent’s written directions and approval.

NETWORK

The network allows students, parents and community members to connect with their own devices and access the internet.  The wireless networks are named BSD_User and BSD_Visitor. BSD_User is for all BSD computers and BSD staff and students personal devices. BSD Students and Staff simply log in to the network using their normal user information/password. This network provides access to all BSD resources, filtered internet and has no bandwidth limitation. Personal devices of staff and students will require them to select BSD_User wireless network and enter their login credentials. BSD_Visitor is for visitors or guests. Their access is limited to 24 hrs and then requires registering again.

Student logins to BSD computers, student email addresses, and Google Apps for Education use the student ID number. The format uses the student’s BSD Student ID number to build the username and email address.  For example if the student ID number is 2593299, then the login and email address will be 2593299@bsd48.org.

All students need parent/guardian permission to have a District email account and access to various digital resources through Google Apps for Education for learning.  Parents/guardians indicate their permission either via online registration or the Digital Resources Permission Form available in the enrollment packet. Those students without the consent form will still be able to access the internet from school desktops but won’t be assigned a  Chromebook or receive assignments via a bsd48.org Google email account. You can find out more information about Student Login on the District website.

The BSD offers a network that is available to students. We allow students to bring their personal devices (BYOD - Bring Your Own Device) to use on our guest network while on school grounds. The school administration and/or teachers have the right to prohibit or limit the use of personal devices in certain circumstances and when the use of the device would interfere with the educational process.

To connect to the guest network, just look for the BSD_Visitor in your wireless network list. More information on the guest network can be found in the main office.

NON-SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS

Authorization must be given by the administration for the distribution of any student or non-school sponsored materials.

PARENT GROUPS

Education is most successful when there is a strong partnership between home and school. Parents are encouraged to call teachers and/or counselors any time they have a concern or question regarding their son or daughter’s progress.  All Southridge teachers have voicemail and email.  Voicemail is accessible through the switchboard and a list of direct dial numbers for teachers’ voicemail will be available in September via our website.  Staff email addresses are on our website and are: first name_last name@beaverton.k12.or.us

Southridge’s monthly newsletter, the Quill, is available on our school website. It is emailed to parents approximately every other Friday. It contains information about events, school policies, student recognition, news items, and other articles that will keep parents informed about Southridge as well as the District.

Southridge Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

The Southridge PTO provides a vehicle for positive involvement by parents and the community with Southridge High School. PARKING

Student Parking in SRHS spaces only.

All cars parked on Southridge High School property must have a visible and valid parking sticker ($15 fee required).  When parking, please park in designated areas only.  Improperly parked vehicles can be towed at the owner’s expense.  View this 2-minute video to understand where to park (and not park) behind THPRD Rec Center. Please be courteous to our neighbors if parking on the streets; parking should be on the fence side of 130th Ave. only.

Students are urged not to leave valuables in their cars.  Neither Southridge High School nor the District is responsible for loss/damage to vehicles or their contents.

The Beaverton School District has a closed campus policy.  Students are not permitted to leave school grounds unless cleared through the attendance desk. The parking lot is off limits during the school day to students unless cleared through staff; in other words, students cannot go out to their vehicles during the day without permission.

Students are to park in spaces marked SRHS and not marked THPRD in the west parking lot, as well as anywhere in the Southridge parking lot other than areas designated for staff and volunteers.  See map above for authorized student parking locations.

PHONE USE

At Southridge High School, we recognize that cell phones are an important part of our students' lives and can be used for various purposes such as communication, education, entertainment, and safety. However, we also believe that cell phone use in the classroom can be a source of distraction, disruption, and disrespect. Additionally, cell phones often interfere with our students’ learning process and our school climate. Therefore, we have established the following cell phone policy.

1. Students are not allowed to use cell phones during the school day, including in the hallways. This includes texting, calling, browsing, gaming, social media, or any other activity that involves the use of a cell phone. This also includes lunch time and passing time.

2. During class time, cell phones must be stored away in the caddies provided by the teacher.

3. Cell phones must be turned off or silenced and must not be visible or accessible to the students.

4. We ask that parents call the school office at (503) 356-2890 if there is an emergency and they need to reach their child. The office staff will relay the message to the student or the teacher as soon as possible. Please do not call or text your child directly during class time as this may disrupt the learning environment.

If a student violates the cell phone policy:

1. A first violation will result in their cell phone being held in the school office until after school.

2. A second violation will result their cell phone being held in the school office until after school.

3. A third violation will result in the cell phone being held in the principal’s office until the parent or guardian comes to pick it up.

Please note, due to extenuating circumstances, there will be a few exceptions to this policy, which is now state law. We appreciate your cooperation and support in enforcing this cell phone policy. We believe that this policy will help us create a positive and productive learning environment for all our students and staff.

Students bringing cellphones to school do so at their own risk. Southridge High School will not assume any liability for any lost, stolen or damaged phones or any other electronic devices. The school will not investigate lost or stolen cell phones. Our recommendation is to leave these devices at home to reduce the opportunity for theft.

POSTERS

Signs, banners or posters must first be approved by the administration or the activities director (Ms. Chamberlain). Signs displayed without authorization will be removed.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Informal progress reports are issued each semester after the first 6 and 12 weeks. A final report card is issued at the end of the semester (18 weeks). Report card grades are added to a student’s transcript, and classes carry credit toward graduation.

SAFETY

Student and staff safety is a priority in the Beaverton School District. WE are committed to providing all of our students and families with safe, caring and inclusive learning environments. A safe school is one where the educational climate fosters a spirit of acceptance and care for all students. A safe school is also one that is prepared to respond when an emergency arises.

Weather events, fire, earthquakes, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that we are training students, teachers, staff and administration for, in partnership with our first responders. In Beaverton, we collaborate with many community partners to review and enhance the District’s safety practices, emergency readiness and response.

It is important for parents and guardians to be aware of and familiar with the District’s safety policies and protocols, and to talk with their students about school safety.

Please visit the District’s Public Safety webpage, where you can find many resources on school safety, including:

The District uses Parent Square to communicate general, attendance notifications, and emergency broadcasts to parents, guardians, students and staff. Parents/guardians can customize their communication preferences in Parent Square to ensure the most effective delivery of messages.

For parents who would like to change or set their contact preferences for emergency alerts and other mass notification broadcasts, visit the Parent Square page.

SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS

Southridge will periodically send email and phone messages to parents using our Parent Square communication system. Student absence notifications are also sent via Parent Square. Email and phone numbers must be kept current in the system to receive communications.

Online Enrollment Verification: The district requires online enrollment verification each year. The online process can be completed through ParentVUE.

The Student Verification of Enrollment process is very important. Updated data allows us to distribute important information, contact you or others in the event of a school emergency, respond appropriately to a medical situation involving your child, and communicate your child's academic progress. Carefully review the information to be sure all information is complete, accurate, and current.

You need to have an active ParentVUE account in order to complete the online enrollment verification. If you need to create a ParentVUE account, please contact our office to obtain an activation key code. Please visit the ParentVUE Information page for more information. If you have questions, again, feel free to contact the school office.

Phone consent needed: New federal regulations require us to get your permission to continue calling parents with our SchoolMessenger system for non-emergency school situations (for example, Nutrition Services balances, and school-specific information).

Daily Attendance calls: Safety is our number one priority, and you need to know if your child is not in school. Attendance calls are considered “High Priority” and will require at least one phone number per guardian to be available to receive the call. When making the change to consider attendance calls “High Priority,” all parents/guardians listed in the Student Information System as a parent order “1” with Educational Rights will receive attendance calls on ALL phone numbers listed in the system. You may choose to limit which of these numbers you would like to receive attendance calls by going to the Parent Square app.

Once at the InfoCenter, you can give us your permission and manage your preferences. To create an account, click “Sign Up” on the top right menu. To sign up, you must have an email address on file with the District. Consent only needs to be given once per parent/guardian.

Once you’ve signed in, you can choose how you want to be contacted based on the category of message (from emergencies to school activities). You will also be able to listen to and read messages from the school for the previous 30 days. You can sign back in to change your preferences at any time. To continue receiving non-emergency messages, you must visit the Parent Square preferences. You can find out more information about Parent Square by visiting the resource page on the district website.

Opt-In for texts We have already started using Parent Square for phone and email messages, but you must OPT IN to receive text messages on your cell phone. The process to indicate you want to receive text messages on your phone is simple and only takes a few seconds to complete.

ParentVue and StudentVue

ParentVUE is a web portal that allows parents and guardians to access school information related to their students.  Parents/guardians can view their student's attendance, schedules, report card, emergency contacts and other information. Access to ParentVUE requires a username and password, which parents/guardians set up with an Access Code. Contact our office to get your activation key. Similarly, StudentVUE allows students to access information on attendance, class schedules, class websites, course history, grade book, report cards and more. Both ParentVUE and StudentVUE can be accessed from any Internet connected device with a current web browser.  Apps for both iOS and Android smartphones are available.

Canvas

Canvas is a web-based Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas helps teachers to assign work, receive and evaluate completed work from students, create online discussions, and manage many other functions of day-to-day learning. Canvas is part of the Beaverton School District’s FutureReady initiative, and students access it through their Chromebooks. Canvas can make teaching and learning more effective by extending classrooms through the use of computers, mobile devices, and the internet.

SEMESTER EXAMS

Southridge will have final exams at the end of each semester: Students who have absences due to illness or family or medical emergencies may make up semester exams. Parents need to call the attendance desk between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. on the day of the exam to notify the school that the student is going to miss a final exam.

Students who miss a semester exam must make up the exam by special arrangement with the teacher. Students who miss a semester exam and do not make arrangements with the teacher for a make-up may receive no credit for the exam.

Dead Week:

Dead Week begins the week before the last week of the term, Finals Week. Essentially, during Dead Week we try to eliminate schedule distractions such as field trips, assemblies, etc. that would pull students out of classes. The expectation for the classroom during Dead Week is that students should not be assigned new major projects to start and to complete during Dead Week; however, unit tests, quizzes, and daily homework are fine to be given.

During Finals Week students are to be in class for the duration of the scheduled final exam period and should not be released early. In addition, each class needs to utilize the final exam periods for a culminating exam or activity.  Teachers should not give final exams prior to finals week.  If a teacher's culminating activity involves student presentations, they may begin earlier than finals week to complete all presentations, but the finals period still needs to be utilized.

All students will be required to take their end-of-term final exams during the scheduled time period. Any exceptions need to be petitioned by parents through an administrator. Students are to remain in the final exam classroom until the time period for that exam is over.

SEMINAR PERIOD

For the coming school year we are evolving into a more thoughtful use of our “extended” time, and renaming the time “Southridge Seminar,” or “Seminar” for short. The Advisory/Seminar period will meet on "even" days during the last period of the day, or usually from 2:10-3:40pm, and will provide additional time for interventions and academic support.

This is not a free period and it is not designed for students to roam around, go off campus, or sit on their phones. This period is designed for students to get their homework completed, visit a teacher for extra tutoring or test taking, participate in a club meeting.

STATEWIDE SCHOOL SAFETY TIP LINE

All students should feel safe at school and in their communities.  SafeOregon gives students, parents, schools and their communities a way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence. This is a safety tool that is provided to all schools by the Oregon State Police. There are five ways to confidentially or anonymously report tips: call or text  844-471-3367; use the Mobile App (download from the web portal www.safeoregon.com); report a tip online through the web portal; or email: tip@safeoregon.com.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Service Learning is defined as service to the community that is tied to the state Career Related Learning Standards.  All Southridge students are encouraged to involve themselves in 12 volunteer Service Learning experiences.

For more information or Community Service opportunities, please see our website or contact Assistant Principal Stone.

Extra-curricular activities:  Time spent in SRHS clubs, sports and organizations (extra-curricular activities), and elected offices do not count for Service Learning. However, if members decide, as a group, to do an activity that benefits the community (not the club itself) outside of regular club activities, we will consider giving credit. This needs to be pre-approved.

STAFFING CONFERENCES

When a student has accumulated absences or is exhibiting other behaviors which give cause for concern, a staffing may be held to discuss the student’s academic performance, which may include the student, parents, teachers, and counselor. At any time, a teacher or parent who is concerned about the attendance or grades of a student may contact that student’s counselor or an administrator to discuss a staffing.

STUDENT CONDUCT

Southridge High School recognizes that most of our students meet acceptable standards of behavior. Student expectations, which apply to all students, are found in the BSD’s Student and Family Handbook. Students are expected to know the contents of this handbook and to comply with the behavior guidelines presented in it. Our behavior guidelines and disciplinary consequences are meant to encourage students to be responsible citizens of the school community.

At Southridge High School, we treat all students with respect and kindness, hence microaggressions are not tolerated.  Microaggressions are defined as  the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.

Parent Notification: Discipline for a minor infraction may be handled without parental notification and may result in the administration of less severe consequences. When more formal disciplinary consequences are required, parents will be notified by phone and/or letter stating the incident and reason for disciplinary action.  Parents are encouraged to contact the administrator who made the notification if there are any concerns or questions.

Lunch/After School Detention will be used for students with excessive tardies and/or other inappropriate behavior. In addition, Saturday School may be assigned to students who continue with chronic, low level behaviors, even after a phone call home has been placed. Students will serve this time at the school on Saturdays from 8am-12pm. Parents will be notified before the student is expected to arrive. Students will have the opportunity to regain lost academic time and work on assignments with an adult.

Assistant principals may occasionally need to temporarily suspend students from school. In disciplinary suspensions, a procedure is followed which provides that the student be informed of the disciplinary violation and allowed to explain his/her view of the occurrence.  Parents are notified and the procedure for returning is explained. In some cases, an in-school suspension may be the disciplinary action of choice.

Expulsion: Recommendations for expulsion are made only after serious consideration.  Expulsion follows District procedure, which provides for an expulsion conference (see Beaverton Student and Family Handbook).

Please note that students can be subject to school discipline for any negative online posting made during or outside of school hours that causes teachers or students to feel threatened or compromised. Disciplinary action can be taken against students for online posts containing threats, bullying, inappropriate pictures, allegations of inappropriate behavior, or such content that is likely to cause disruption in the school.

Campus Monitors/Security

It is a District priority to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students. To assist in reaching this goal, Southridge High School has three campus monitors present during school hours. They will monitor the school campus under the direction of the administration and will assist administrators with the management of student-related issues.

STUDENT STORE

Southridge PTO operates a store for the convenience of students. The store sells snack items and non-caffeinated beverages. The store hours are 8:15 - 3:40, Monday through Friday.  Students may visit the store during class time, but only if they have a pass from their teacher.

SUPERVISION ON SCHOOL GROUNDS

Southridge opens to students at 8:15 a.m. on school days, at which time students are permitted to arrive. There is no supervision prior to this time. Supervision ends at 3:40 p.m. Students are expected to be picked up or gone from campus by this time unless they are participating in a school-sponsored after-school activity or working under the direct supervision of a staff member.

TALENTED AND GIFTED OPTION

In accordance with the TAG mandate, Southridge has established criteria for identifying students for TAG services. Questions regarding available programs, guidelines, classes, and outcomes may be directed to the school TAG coordinator or a school administrator.

TECHNOLOGY

Southridge High School has many opportunities for students to take advantage of learning through electronic technologies. Chromebook laptops are issued to all students as part of the District’s Future Ready efforts. Southridge does not allow students to install or use any software not currently on the computers without expressed permission. Students are not allowed to eat or drink (even water) near the computer equipment.  Students who do not comply with both district and school expectations will not be allowed to use computer technology at Southridge.

Students may not have or use laser pointers/pens at school or at any school activity.

Please visit this website to review district AI use and guidelines.

TEXTBOOKS

The District does not charge students a rental fee for the use of textbooks or technology. However, students are responsible for all books and items checked out to them and are expected to exercise care in their treatment. Students are required to pay for lost or damaged books. Technology guidelines are on the District website.

VALUABLES

Students are strongly encouraged not to bring valuable personal items to school. We cannot assure that personal items will be safe in hall lockers, gym lockers, or other areas where students’ personal things are left unattended. The best security for valuables is to leave them at home. Suspected theft of personal or District property should be reported to Campus Security.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers can help tutor or mentor a student, assist in the library, or perhaps help in other ways around the school. If a parent or guardian is interested in volunteering, click on the link below for more information. Many of our volunteer opportunities are run through our PTO organization. Email volunteer@southridgepto.com for information.

All volunteers must complete a background check and an application. In order to streamline the application process, integrate background checks and allow volunteers to manage their own profiles, the District has a Volunteer Management System (VMS). Once the background check is cleared, a profile is created.

WEATHER CLOSURE

Local radio and TV stations will be informed of weather closures or delays prior to 6:00 a.m. Stations will carry weather closure announcements between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.  Texts and phone calls will also go out through the district’s Parent Square notification system, used by the district to send general and emergency broadcasts.

911 RESPONSE PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES

This plan follows the BSD protocol for all District schools and buildings:

  1. Any staff person may call 911
  2. Notify office, parent, school nurse, Public Safety
  3. Print student profile page and Health Management Plan, if applicable, for EMS
  4. Once things improve,  Risk Management is called to provide additional details for an investigation, if necessary.
