Course Description: Advanced photography is a course for motivated students and focuses on developing a higher level of understanding in photography.  This course explores advanced operations and functions of digital photography and manipulating settings to achieve a specific result.  Students will learn about photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition, and lighting.  Students will explore the history of photography, learning about its specific and technological developments,  important innovators in the field, and relevance within diverse cultural contexts.  Students will learn the basics of the darkroom by exposing and developing film and enlarging prints. Students will explore the significance of photography within the larger context of the art world and learn about its application to the modern working world.

2 Weeks

  • Students will review the basic history and development of photography.
  • Students will be able to name and label the main parts of a DSLR camera.
  • Students will review how the camera works and explain how good composition and exposure is reached.

Camera Mode Images

1 Week

  • Students will identify what each of the camera mode icons means.
  • Students will use proper exposure to capture 2 images of each of the different camera modes
  • Students will show personal growth through purposeful practice and experimentation of new approaches with guidance

HDR Images

1 Week

  • Students will be able to identify, define, and produce HDR images
  • Students will develop an understanding of the different camera sensor options and understand the benefits and limitations of each option
  • Students will use Adobe Photoshop to create original HDR images

  • Students will manipulate exposure to emulate the work of Siskind
  • Students will deepen their understanding of composition and exposure

High Key/Low Key

2 Weeks

  • Students will be able to recognize and reproduce images using both High Key and Low Key photographic principles
  • Students will show personal growth through purposeful practice and experimentation of new approaches with guidance
  • Students will make affective artistic choice in response to assignments

  • Students will learn the process of taking images on film, developing film, and printing enlargements in the dark room
  • Students will gain appreciation for the history of photography and the photographers who paved the way for the digital world of photography

  • Students will be able to identify and produce images with multiple exposures
  • Students will relate aspects of personal identity and experiences to create original artwork
