DRAFT- Bristol County Agricultural High School

1:1 Surface GO Agreement

Receiving Your Surface GO:

Surface GOs will be distributed each summer at Freshman Academy.  Any student who does not attend Freshman Academy will need to arrange for a time to pick up the device prior to school starting.  Parents & Students must sign and return the Surface GO agreement form document before the Surface GO can be issued to their child.

Training:

As part of Freshman Academy, students will be trained on how to use the Surface GO.   We will have students, staff, and administrators on hand to provide the training.  Training documents and videos will also be available online for students to refer to when needed.

Return:

Students will submit their Surface GO for inspection prior to the end of the school year to assess for damages and to ensure that they are being kept up to date.

Any student who transfers out of BCAHS will be required to return their Surface GO and charger.  If a Surface GO and charger are not returned, the parent/guardian will be held responsible for payment in full ($650.00).  If payment is not received the parent/guardian will be turned over to a collection agency.

Taking Care of Your Surface GO:

Students are responsible for the general care of the Surface GO which they have been issued by the school.  Surface GOs that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the IT Department or Helpdesk.  If a loaner Surface GO is needed, one will be issued to the student until their Surface GO can be repaired or replaced.

General Precautions:

Carrying the Surface GO:

The protective shell of the Surface GO will only provide basic protection from everyday use.  It is not designed to prevent damage from drops or abusive handling.  Carrying the Surface GO in a padded backpack or padded book bag is acceptable provided the backpack or book bag is handled with care.  For example, you shouldn’t toss the bag or drop the bag if your Surface GO is inside. Black rugged case will be provided to each student.

Screen Care:

The Surface GOs are designated with a touchscreen and can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment.  The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.

Using Your Surface GO

At School:

The Surface GO is intended for use at school during both academic and vocational-agricultural classes each day.  In addition to teacher expectations for Surface GO use, school messages, announcements, calendars, academic handbooks, student handbooks and schedules will be accessed using the Surface GO.  Students must be responsible for bringing their Surface GO to all classes, unless specifically advised not to do so by their teacher.

At Home:

All students are required to take their Surface GO home each night throughout the school year for charging.  Surface GOs must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition.  Students need to charge their Surface GOs each evening.  If students leave their Surface GO at home, they must immediately phone parents to bring the Surface GO to school.  Repeat violations of this policy will result in referral to administration and possible disciplinary action including loss of privileges.

It is recommended that students not carry the AC Adapter power cord (charger) to school.  If fully charged at home, the battery will last throughout the day.

Sound:

Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes.

Printing:

The Surface GO will support a physical printer connection through a USB-C port. Students will also be able to print physically in Student Commons.   Future printer locations may be established as needed.

Managing Your Files and Saving Your Work:

Students may save documents to their Google Drive or they may save to an external memory device such as a SD card or USB flash drive. Saving to Google Drive will make the file accessible from any computer with internet access. Students using Google Drive to work on their documents will not need to save their work, as Drive will save each keystroke as the work is being completed.  It will be the responsibility of the student to maintain the integrity of their files and keep proper backups.  Students will be trained on proper file management procedures.

Personalizing the Surface GO:

Surface GOs must remain free of any decorative writing, drawing, stickers, paint, tape, or labels that are not the property of Bristol County Agricultural High School.  Spot checks for compliance will be done by administration, teachers or BCAHS Technicians at any time.

Students may add appropriate music, photos, and videos to their Surface GO. Personalized media are subject to inspection and must follow the Bristol County Agricultural High School acceptable use policy.

Software on Surface GOs:

Originally Installed Software:

The software originally installed on the Surface GO must remain on the Surface GO in usable condition and easily accessible at all times.

All Surface GOs are supplied with an up to date Windows Operating System and many other applications useful in an educational environment. Students should allow Windows updates to run when they are prompted to do so.

From time to time the school may add software applications for use in a particular course. Software installation will be scheduled by the tech office depending on the requirements of the software.

Virus Protection:

Windows Defender.  Microsoft Defender Antivirus delivers the comprehensive, ongoing, and real-time protection you expect against software threats like viruses, malware, and spyware across email, apps, the cloud, and the web.

Additional Software:

Students are unable to install additional software on their Surface GO other than what has been approved by Bristol County Agricultural High School.

Lightspeed

Lightspeed is a software application that allows us to unify filtering, classroom management, and school mental health tools into a single suite. Lightspeed’s suite of tools helps us maximize the learning potential of our 1:1 school technology program.

Inspection:

Students may be selected at random to provide their Surface GO for inspection.  The purpose for inspection will be to check for proper care and maintenance as well as inappropriate material being carried into the school.

Procedure for Restoring the Surface GO:

If technical difficulties occur, technical support staff will use every measure to attempt to resolve the problem.  If the problem cannot be fixed in a reasonable amount of time, the Surface GO will be restored to factory defaults.  In a One-to-One environment it is impossible for support staff to maintain a working environment for all if too much time is spent fixing every glitch that may arise.  Restoring the Surface GO will restore the device to the state in which the user originally received it. Do not attempt to restore the Surface GO to factory defaults yourself. Bring the device to the school’s IT department or Media Center help desk if you have a problem with your Surface GO. All student created files stored on an external SD card, USB flash drive, or Google Drive will be intact after the operating system is restored.  All files saved on the Surface GO that have been synced to Google Drive will be intact.  However, all other data (music, photos, documents) stored on internal memory that has NOT been synched will not be restored.

Protecting & Storing Your Surface GO:

Surface GO Identification:

Surface GOs will be labeled in the manner specified by the school.

Surface GOs can be identified in the following ways:

Storing Surface GOs at Extra-Curricular Events:

Students are responsible for securely storing their Surface GO during extra-curricular events.

Surface GOs Left in Unsupervised / Unsecured Areas:
