Decksplanations
- What a person wants and articulates: "How do I get next rank floor"/"How do I get legend"/"How do I move up a multiplier"
- What does committing to learning look like?
- 1. Time investment and consistent, sustained focus
- Comfort and growth are often at odds with each other, and playing mindlessly is fine if you're not looking for any goals - but if you want to improve, you have to work at it to a degree that requires patience and focus. You can't just luck your way into getting better
- This will often be a journey across multiple metagames if you're looking to improve skills the way that card gamers who have been playing for years have already done
- The goal here is not to rank up, but to improve your skills to the point where a higher rank is a symptom of your upgraded play
- This will involve playing hearthstone consistently - not every day, but throughout an expansion's life cycle, and taking the game on its terms even if you don't have a deck you're totally in love with
- In addition, you will often want to keep playing more once you hit your rank plateau for the month - you cannot learn how to feel comfortable at a higher rank if you don't play any games there!!!
- 2. Emotional awareness/bias control
- Ranked goals can be pretty evil. You want to set goals of improvement, but even the best players in the world have bad days and derank - you have to be ready for this and take it in stride
- In fact, a big part of improvement is in building up the skills to tolerate swings emotionally and recognize your own illogical thoughts
- In addition, you have to be willing to expand the repertoire of what you're willing to play to make sure you're giving yourself a chance - again, this is about doing something for yourself to make sure you're giving yourself the best chance to grow
- Make sure you’re prepared to play in a learning mindset - If you’re overtired, or tilted, or upset at things outside the game, you’ll make mistakes in the game which will feed that cycle
- You need to find time or a mode where you're not constantly learning - give yourself a vacation. Can be a different mode in the client, a different game, or even a time of the month after you've hit a milestone - but remember, you still WANT to play at the highest ranks available to you as much as possible to make sure you're stretching your muscles and learning what will get you punished at higher levels
- 4. Active engagement with support mechanisms
- And that means swallowing your pride! SHARE REPLAYS! Let people look over your play, let them give you feedback, and then absorb it
- This also means educating yourself on how decks play - watching twitch streams/vods and youtube guides will save you a ton of time and can help you learn where your decisions differ from where the pros' do
- But don't spend TOO much time on the academic side - looking at mull stats and watching vods is a great way to let your anxiety take over and have you sit in analysis paralysis without actually playing. If you don't play, you won't improve
- 5. Self-documentation and structure
- Write stuff down!!! What are the mistakes you commonly make that you recognize after the game? What are some bad habits you have? What do people see in your replays?
- When you have a play you’re not sure about, take a screenshot, then review the game with that turn in mind as a turning point
- Figure out how to structure your play sessions and even your games. Write down when you think you should become the aggressor in the game you're currently playing, take a set amount of time before you take actions on your turn, and build up a routine around mulliganing
- Rules and structure remove anxiety from the equation - once you build up a ritual and habit, you will often play better through practice and repetition
