Mid Evaluation date :  June 24, 2024                                 End Evaluation Date : June 29, 2024

Total number of participants :     64

Name of the Instructor : Prof Anil Kottantharayil, IIT Bombay

Venue and Location:  Wadhwani Electronics Laboratory <https://www.ee.iitb.ac.in/~wel_iitb/index.php>

Mode of Workshop : In - person at IIT Bombay

Basic qualification for the participants expected:

Third-year students pursuing B.Tech./B.E. in Electronics Engineering or M.Sc. (Electronics/ Physics with basic Electronics background) or equivalent program with a good background of basic Electronics, Analog circuits.

Entry criteria for participants:

Courses which the student should have studied:

- Basic Electronics, Analog circuits or linear integrated circuits (mandatory)

- Basic knowledge of NgSpice or LTSpice simulation software (preferred)

- Any relevant courses passed through NPTEL with good grades.

Attending an online test/exam to see if they have pre-requisites or maybe an SOP:

- No online test/ exam (first-come-first-select basis): Should fulfill the criteria of pre-requisites and basic qualification.

Workshop Fees: Rs. 1000 (Registration fee - Rs. 200 + Caution deposit amount - Rs. 800). On successfully completing the workshop Rs. 800 will be refunded.

Note: Caution Deposit amount of Rs. 800 will not be refunded if the participant does not complete the workshop or is absent during the workshop

List of experiments to be covered:

1) Understanding lab instruments: AFG, DSO, PS and DMM familiarization (non-graded exercise)

2) Op-amp Internals and OTA design:

- Differential amplifiers and current mirrors circuits

- Single-stage OTA design

- Non-idealities of op-amps

3) Instrumentation amplifier related labs:

- Instrumentation amplifier design and sensor (load cell) interfacing

- Simple OPAMP applications circuits (strain- gauge based cantilever deflection measurement)

4) Applications circuits– I: Filters and Oscillators:

- Voltage controlled oscillator

- Active filter circuits

- Narrow band filters and frequency synthesis (Fourier series) OR

5) Applications – II: Phase sensitive detection (PSD):

- Phase sensitive detection circuits, extraction of signal buried in noise

- Application of PSD: gray scale detection (how dark is dark)

OR some other concept and application theme will be taken up as a design problem.

* Each topic tutorials/ lectures and experimentation will be covered in approx. 1-2 days.

Learning Objectives:

Basic:

- Learn how to use basic electrical characterization equipment

- Learn how to analyze basic op-amp circuits and op-amp internal circuit

Intermediate:

- Predict and interpret circuit performance

- Design test setups and circuits to perform task at hand

Advanced:

- Apply concepts from other courses to the lab, and vice versa

- Absorb the underlying techniques and apply them to other circuit applications

Instructions for the lab workshop:

- Own laptop (preferred) to install the necessary software which will help to learn/ understand the concepts and implementation of the design independently.

- The supporting documents to revisit the concepts, software installation guidelines will be shared before the start of the workshop to set the base to get started on the first day.

- MS Teams link will be provided to get access to the course material and related instructions

Certificate :

Certificates will be awarded to the participants based on attendance and final exam scores

Split of marks for the workshop:

Internal: 40% (Experimentation)

Exams: Mid-evaluation exam (after week-1): 20%

Course End exam: 40%
