Welcome to St. Michael the Archangel
Hour of Prayer
On January 19th at 5 pm
Evensong marks the end of the day and prepares us for the approaching night. The roots thereof comes out of ancient monastic traditions of prayer. In this service, we are invited to pray for the world, our families, and ourselves. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity, the same light that dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us in the Holy Spirit
Epiphany (from Greek epiphaneia, “manifestation”) is the 12th day of Christmas on January 6th, the revealing of the Messiah to the Gentiles (non-Jewish). It began in the Eastern Church with a commemoration of the birth of Christ. It has been celebrated in the Western Church since the 4th century. The Epiphany season, or Epiphanytide, (following the former Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church and the Book of Common Prayer) lasts from January 6th until the Feast of the Presentation (February 2nd), known as Candlemas (Candlemass).
Prelude Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern Andreas Armsdorff
"How bright appears the Morning Star" (Hymn 329), known as the "Queen of Chorales," was written and composed by Philip Nicolai in 1599. The tune is heard in the pedals in this chorale prelude by Andreas Armsdorff (1670-1699), organist in Erfurt, Germany.
On a throne exalted I beheld, and lo, a man sitting, whom a legion of Angels worship, singing together: behold, his rule and governance endureth to all ages. (Psalm 100:1a) O be joyful in God, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness.
(Psalm 72:18). Blessed be the Lord God, even the God of Israel: which only doeth wondrous things. (Psalm 72:3) The mountains also shall bring peace: and the little hills righteousness unto the people.Alleluia, alleluia. (Psalm 100:1a) O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness. Alleluia.
(Psalm 100:1-2a) O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness: and come before his presence with a song: be ye sure that the Lord he is God.
Organ Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern James Woodman
James Woodman (b.1957) wrote his variations on Hymn 329 in 1994 while being organist at the Society of St. John the Evangelist in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
(Luke 2:48b-49) Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them: How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
Postlude Improvisation on "March of the Kings" Renaud de Vilbac
This piece is based on the 18th century French Provencal song on the Epiphany and the Wise Men. It is by Renaud de Vilbac (1829-1884), composer and organist of the church of Saint-Eugène-Sainte-Cécile in Paris.
