Happy New Year!

Please find the Critical path outlining the learning for Spring A further down the page.

This term we have a whole school Space topic. We have an exciting BIG EXPERIENCE for the second part of this half term. A space dome will be visiting the school and each class will experience a fantastic opportunity bring space as close to them as possible.

The children will be learning about important events in recent history with the Tim Peake space mission and further back in time with the first moon landing.

In the first half term we will be using aliens as a big stimulus to our writing. We are using ‘Here come the aliens!’ by Colin McNaughton as a basis for character description work. We will also be designing and creating an alien through junk modelling. This will link with our science learning towards the end of this half term where the children will be learning about different materials and their properties. The aliens will also help the children to learn their ‘alien’ pseudo words in phonics.

In maths the children are starting the new year with a TIME unit of learning. They will be learning days of the week, months of the year and telling the time to the hour and half hour using analogue clocks. In Science we will be learning about the different seasons and the usual weather patterns within these seasons.

Mrs Mortlock will be taking the class on a Wednesday morning to cover PPA for the class. She will be teaching RE and music.

PE is now on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon for class 1. Please can all children have their PE kit in school.

November

Welcome back to school after a restful half term.

We have a phonics morning for parents on Friday 10th November, please stay to join us from 9 - 9.30am.

Further down the page you will see the Critical path for Autumn B outlining our learning for this half term.

We have started our English learning by looking at instructions. The children have been learning how to follow instructions and the type of vocabulary used in instructions. We have followed instructions to make firework rockets and we are working towards writing a set of instructions for staying safe on bonfire night. For this, we are learning about the Bonfire night traditions and noticing potential dangers. We will be reading the e- book ‘Sparks in the sky’ to help us with this.bonfire.png

rocket.pngsparks in the sky.png

Following on from this we will have a strong Science link in our English learning and we are learning about living things, specifically birds. We will be bird watching in Science and learning about different types of birds and what they need to survive. We will be finishing this with a trip to Rosemoor to put our learning to use to identify suitable homes for a Robin.

 birds.pngrobin.png

In maths we are learning about geometry, including 2D and 3D shapes with position and direction.

 2d shapes.png

Following that we will be starting a multiplication and division learning unit where the children will be learning counting in 10s and 2s. We will be using counters to make arrays to show multiplication number sentences.counting in 2s.png

September

Welcome to Class 1 with Miss Trathen. I hope you have had a good summer!
In Class 1 we have an overarching topic this term of ‘People who help us’. This links to the whole school topic of ‘Harmony and Conflict’. We will be learning about people and places within our local and wider communities who help and support in a range of situations, such as the fire services, ambulance services, polices services, etc. We hope to have visits from some people who work in these fields and also hope to visit some of these areas to inform the children about the work and support these services provide.

The children will be building on their learning of cursive handwriting. The teaching sequence for letters can be found on the medium term planning. There is also a very good website which shows cursive letter formation which can be practised at home.

Use letter choice 2 from the selection.

Link to handwriting practise website:
http://www.teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-beginners-choice-2.html

There will be new Love Reading books for children which will act as their daily reading diary and include homework reading tasks linked to school activities. Please use these in place of the red contact diaries.

In phonics Class 1 will start the year recapping Phase 3 sounds which were taught at the end of reception. We follow a mixture of the jolly phonics and letters and sounds program for teaching phonics. Please attend our phonics morning on Friday 15th September for more information on specific sounds and teaching activities.
In English our texts that teach are Dogger and The Three Little Pigs. We will also be using Cops and Robbers and Peepo stories for cross curricular teaching activities.

In Science we will be starting the year with learning about Healthy Eating where the children will learning about different food groups, portion sizes and sugar content in different foods. We will also be using the BBC sugar smart APP to scan food packaging to find out and compare the amount of sugar different foods contain. We will move onto learning about the properties and uses of different materials and we will be linking this learning to The Three Little Pigs traditional story. The children will have the opportunity to decide which materials to use to build a new house for the three little pigs, based on their learning.
For our Maths learning we will start off by learning about the number system, counting and place value. Children will be counting and ordering numbers up to and beyond 20, counting in 2s and finding missing numbers in sequences as well as counting backwards. Counting forwards and backwards from different start points is very important for children’s number knowledge and will be a daily part of maths lessons.
Please see the weekly timetable for specific teaching sessions. Class 1 have PE on a Monday afternoon. All children are expected to have a full PE kit in school for every PE session.

Please can all uniform and PE kit be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Jumpers are usually found when lost if they are clearly named.

Miss Lewis will be taking the class on a Wednesday afternoon to cover my planning time. She taught year 1 last year and is looking forward to teaching class 1. She will be teaching a mixture of RE and music across the year.
We will be using CLASS DOJO for a point of contact outside of school, to share pictures and for positive reward points for the children. If you have not been signed up to CLASS DOJO please speak to me and I can set you up from your email address.

We will also be using Go Noodle within the class for daily exercise, coordination and fitness activities.

We have 2 fantastic volunteers who will be listening to children read across Monday and Tuesday afternoons. If anyone else is available to volunteer some time to listen to children read in the afternoons I would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know.

All teaching staff have a morning briefing at 8.30am. I will be in class from 8.40am if you need to speak to me. Children need to use this time to change reading books and complete the morning task from the board into their THINK books. You are more than welcome to book an after school meeting if you require to.

There will be a welcome meeting after school in class 1 on Thursday 7th, which all parents and carers are invited to attend.
