Binding The Strong Man

Opening:

Text:

Mark 3:20-35 (KJV) And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.

22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. 23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. 28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: 29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: 30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. 32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. 33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

Introduction:

Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (KJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

  1. The Power Given the Church
  1. Called  Mark 3:13 (KJV) And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
  2. Commissioned  Mark 3:14-15 (KJV) And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, 15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
  1. Mark 16:15-18 (KJV) And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
  2. Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
  1. Qualified Mark 3:15 (KJV) And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
  1. Matthew 16:19 (KJV) And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
  2. Acts 1:8 (KJV) But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
  1. The Impotence of the Church
  1. Fear of Man — History reveals that God’s servants are usually misjudged by their contemporaries, and often misunderstood by their families.  D. L. Moody was called “Crazy Moody” by many people in Chicago and even the great apostle Paul was called Mad (Acts 26:24-25).[1]  Mark 3:11-12 (KJV) And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. 12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.  The Lord Jesus does not need nor desire any affirmation by His enemies, but only the witness of His own disciples.  There is always a great temptation for Christians to seek acclaim or testimony from ungodly people of influence.[2]
  1. Religious Leaders
  2. Friends — Mark 3:21 (KJV) And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
  3. Family — (v. 31)
  1. Carnality
  1. Between Mark 3:19 and 20 Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)[3]
  2. Spiritual Adultery — The nation of Israel was taken into captivity for their idolatry which God called adultery.  We often think of this in terms of leaving God for the world.  Much of their idol worship took place while worshiping in God in the temple as well.  Just as one may have multiple affairs being unfaithful to their spouse while keeping it from their companion and pretending to be faithful; so Christians flirt with the world while claiming to be true to Christ.
  1. Division
  2. Doubt
  3. Blaspheme
  1. Attributing the work of God to the devil
  2. It was not sinners who were committing this sin but rather the spiritual leaders of Israel.[4]
  1. The Fettering of the Enemy — Acts 19:13-16 (KJV) Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
  1. Cleanse
  2. Be Filled
  3. Recognize Authority
  4. Enter the Strong Man’s House  — we must take the fight to the enemy rather than waiting for him to come to us.  We must be on the offense rather than the defense.  When we wait for those bound by sin to come to us we often find ourselves defending what is right.

Conclusion:

We will either bind the enemy or be bound by him.
