- Welcome
- Mrs. Blackburn welcomed CIC members.
- Agenda Item
- Extended School Year
- Discussion
- Teacher member stated, we are not filling in gaps for students, because students that need the intervention are not attending the Intersessions.
- Attendance over the years has dropped during Intersessions and is not consistent. Therefore students that could benefit from intersession are not getting it, they are not here.
- A positive example, one student came two years and was in red, but passed STAAR
- A parent stated, I can flex my schedule, however if I had a 9-5 employer, it would be very hard to find someone to pick up kids with this schedule.
- Teacher states, as a STAAR grade level we lose 10 days of instruction minimum for all students. If students don’t show up, they lose out. Every moment they are present in school they would do better.
- Having taught summer school, I thought Intersession would be targeting a specific TEK, it’s ok that this student did not get TEK 5.5, but the students are not coming to intersession.
- This last Intersession, we tried to invite as many students as we could, felt we did not specifically hit only targeted low TEKS.
- Another issue, if teachers don’t sign up, for example students in the lower grades, the students need to come, but the teachers do not want to work it.
- Teacher states parents now let kids have vacation, but the kids need the Intersession.
- A teacher stated, for example I had 15 students signed up, but only five actually showed up in a class this last Intersession.
- Summer School attendance has more commitment than Intersession right now.
- Another teacher noted that coming from a STAAR grade and teaching a lower grade, the Intersession is taught in small groups all day, so my students benefited in the lower grades.
- Another teacher stated, I’m looking at my calendar right now for June 17-21. The parents will not commit to having students attend, because siblings will already be out of school.
- Another teacher stated that without STAAR results for the last Intersession, who do we target?
- Last year the Intersession was right before STAAR in April, that was intentional and helped.
- Teachers stated we canceled the June 2023 Intersession, could not get enough attendance, and teachers are tired.
- Another teacher stated that if Intersession were done like this year Jumpstart, teachers do not want to come back early. They were tired and did not have enough of a break.
- Another teacher stated that the pay for teachers is inconsistent for Intercessions and for Summer School always the same $40.00 rate.
- The families are all going on vacations to visit family in their cultures and they do not come back to school, even the first two weeks of school or leave school two weeks before school is even over.
- Teachers stated students tell parents, why should I go, if my siblings do not have to go to school?
What is another option, if we do not have Intersession? An alternative if we did away with the Extended School Year Calendar? We want to do what is best for students.
- Talk about doing Virtual Saturday tutoring.
- One teacher is currently doing Virtual Saturday tutoring a J.K.
- If we do not have Intersession, I have seen it with tutoring two days a week, not just one day 30 minutes. The commitment was one hour a week.
- Ability for students to go to Summer School.
- What are other schools doing?
- Olmos has been consistent year after year with culture and systems in place, tutor twice a week, additional optional morning tutoring and afternoon tutoring also.
- A current teacher here said, “When we worked at Olmos, “we targeted tutoring Mon.- reading and Tuesday-math. “We had two assistants there helping us with tutoring”.
- If students needed additional tutoring, bus students would get tutoring at 7:10 a.m. We would rotate morning tutoring (ex. one week, pick up students with their breakfast and they would bring and eat while they were being tutored until 7:45am.
- We were paid additional hours for the morning tutoring, before contract time.
- There are funds to tutor in the morning before contract hours.
- Another teacher stated at another school, teachers in fifth departmentalized: Mon- Reading, Tuesday- Math and Wed- Science.
- Olmos had a Homework Club and happened to be tutoring at the same time, so on Thursday’s students come in.
- Our groups consistently changed about four to five weeks.
How was attendance prior to STAAR
- When we looked at attendance, there was a dip in attendance.
- Jackson-Keller 2023: 91.5% Absences High: November 10.5%, May 10%
- Jackson-Keller 2022: 91.9 % Absence: June 19.4% absences, January 13.4% absences.
