Song, Artist | Genre/ Genre Conventions of music videos | What issue/social group was being represented? How was it being represented? | What did you like/dislike about the music video? |
Yura Yunita - Dunia Tipu Tipu (2021) | Indonesian Pop - Lower production budget than Western productions
- Features more of Indonesian culture than western culture
| Relationships, love, bonds - Represented positively by showing the strength of the bonds between different kinds of relationships. Close ups when people started getting emotional but pulls away when it gets more private
- Mise en scene with pillows make it appear cosier which connotes love
- Simple clothes for the people shown in the videos may be suggesting that love also is a simple thing
| Like: - The simplicity of the music video but still able to effectively communicate a message (close ups when they start getting emotional)
- Cosy mise en scene to emphasise love
Dislikes: - The artist herself is not shown as much which I personally don’t mind but fans may prefer to see the artist more

Harry Styles - As It Was | Pop - Higher budget
- A lot of vibrant colours
| - Romantic love: Harry himself is wearing bright red colours vs his partner wearing a bright blue which are complementary colours, shown as complicated bc of the dependency on each other but the partner moving on
- Masculinity: Although the music video wasn’t related to gender, Harry Styles represents himself, a man, as wearing both masculine and feminine associated fashion which breaks gender roles/stereotypes
| Likes: - I like the mise-en-scene’s usage of complementary colours. It’s also notable that the other actors shown dont wear red/blue but earthy colours which makes harry and the other model to stand out more
Dislikes: - It’s very high budget so not realistic for students to do something similar

Jamie T - Zombie | Indie - A more ‘homemade’ low quality feel
- Usually ‘softer’ visuals (lighter cooler colours)
- Low budget
- More focus on the band
| - The band (zombies): The band here is shown as zombies. They’re shown as very gorey and lifeless through mise-en-scene but not really cared about by the other actors in the scene as they just carry on as if it was normal. A lot of closeups to the gore when it started being more gorey.
| Likes: - I like the subtle shift from the band being seemingly more human to become really gorey after
Dislikes: - Although this is a convention of indie music, I don’t like how much it focuses on exclusively the band
- Doesn’t seem to have a strong message that is trying to be communicated to the audience

The Weekend - Blinding Lights | RnB - Romantic connotations
- Sad, more moody tones
| - Speeding: Shown as addictive through the camera focusing on how the subject becoming really excited when speeding but leads to negative consequences by showing the artist getting in trouble after
- Violence: Closeups to show the artist getting hurt
- Masculinity: Shown stereotypically as being violent and
- Romantic relationships
| Likes: - I like the colours here and the urban feel
Dislikes: - Although being fast paced matches the speeding theme, Iwanst able to understand what’s going on as well
|
The Beatles - Now And Then | Rock - ‘Harsher’, more bold
- Darker colours
| - Time: Compared the band now vs then using old and new clips throughout the music video
- Friendship: Shows the band’s relationship throughout the years by using old clips and new clips of them and deepfake AI recreations of their dead members which shows them as
| Likes: - I like the comparison of old clips and new clips as it could effectively create an emotional response in the fans
Dislikes: - I think the usage of AI was really uncreative here
