Cheadle Hulme School is committed to providing educational and other opportunities which support its aspiration to ensure the fullest possible development of each pupil.
The School recognises that some pupils may require additional support. The School will ensure that its policies and procedures will, as far as is reasonably possible, help identify, educate and support those with specific learning needs or with physical conditions which may restrict their ability to access the full range of educational and other opportunities offered by the School.  The School will comply with its legal obligations in respect of any pupil who has additional needs and will have a Differentiation Policy which encourages staff to create opportunities for learning that can be accessed by pupils with different skills and abilities. The School will employ a range of assessment tools prior to and after any pupil’s admission to the School to help identify any learning needs and any particular issues which may affect a pupil.
There will be some occasions where identifying the needs of a pupil may be outside the expertise of staff within the School. Referral to an educational psychologist or other external source of support may be appropriate, to confirm a specific diagnosis or for guidance to support the pupil. When such referrals to external agencies are likely to have cost implications, the School cannot guarantee that it will meet those costs.
Any additional learning support offered by the School will:
| comply with the national statutory requirements for independent schools, guidance and codes of practice; | | be in partnership with the Local Authority of any pupil who has a Statement/Education Health and Care Plan to provide appropriate provision for that pupil; | | reflect that each pupil is an individual and consider the effect of any disability or additional need on that pupil; | | where appropriate, provide individual learning plans which will be reviewed and monitored to ensure they are implemented effectively; | | ensure that the additional needs of pupils are taken account of when implementing its policies such as behaviour management, curriculum, trips, etc. |
In determining the nature of support to be provided the School will:
| expect parents/carers to have provided the School with accurate information about any additional needs, whether or not these have been formally diagnosed or recognised, at the time of registration or as soon as they become aware of those needs; | | balance the needs of all pupils taking account of the available resources including those from external sources; | | consider the practical implications of making adjustments; | | consider the extent to which making any adjustment or extra support would be effective in overcoming the assessed disadvantages affecting a disabled pupil; | | be entitled to take account of the effects making adjustments would have on the wider School community; | | consider the resources of the School, including financial resources, and the availability of financial or other assistance from other sources. |
The School will also ensure that: | there is a member of staff (Head of Learning & Support) who has overall responsibility for learning support provision and for developing School-wide coordination of learning support provision and good practice; | | the number of staff with specific responsibility for learning support is reviewed on a regular basis; | | there are appropriate mechanisms for identification, assessment and, where necessary,  referral of learning support requirements; | | particular needs are identified as early as possible so that parents/carers and teachers are aware of the level of support required; | | requests from parents/carers or those which arise from external agencies, including health care professionals and previous schools/nurseries, for additional support are dealt with effectively; | | it communicates effectively with parents/carers about the level of support the School is able to offer, and about progress being made by their child; | | professional development opportunities for staff will include awareness of learning support issues; | | teachers are supported when they have concerns about a pupil’s ability to access the curriculum without additional support and know with whom they can discuss their concerns; | | there is provision for those pupils who require additional support during internal and public examinations. The School will provide any such support during public examinations, subject to any conditions or obligations imposed by the relevant examination board; | | the performance and learning experiences of pupils who require additional support will be regularly monitored, and the team supporting the child will be updated on a regular basis. |
The Board of Governors will nominate at least one Governor to retain an oversight of issues relating to learning support and the School’s associated statutory obligations.
