@ Beth Aharon @ Beyond

Beth Aharon is Riverdale’s Sephardic orthodox congregation, located at the Riverdale Bayit (HIR) Bronx, NY, since its establishment on parashat Ḥaye Sara 5768/1998. Beth Aharon tefilot follow the Sephardi-Yerushalmi nusa, based on the teachings of Rav Ovadia Yosef, z”l. Our community embraces Jewish worshipers of all ethnic communities (‘edot) and of any level of observance, and welcomes all individuals who are in search of the Jewish faith. We encourage our congregants to take an active-leading role in Tefila and Qriat haTorah.

Community Matters

Ahavat Yisrael and Ahavat Haberiyot - love for the Jewish people and love for all humanity - are part of the Bayit’s values, shared also by Beth Aharon, and manifested by being a warm and welcoming and inclusive community to everyone who love Medinat Yisrael and the Jewish People.

Shabbat Parashat Ḥaye Sara is Beth Aharon’s Anniversary. This year 5784 is our 25th year. In gematria 25 equals ḢIBA-חִיבָּה (with yod :) which means love in biblical Hebrew and affection in modern Hebrew. May it be a year of showing affection and love to each other and keeping on being welcoming to all the others, a value which intrinsically defines our community - Beth Aharon @ The Bayit.

Picture of the Week

- The Resting of Warriors -

A Weekly Moment

The most critical thing in a negotiation is to get inside your opponent's head and figure out what he really wants.”

- Jacob Lew, United States ambassador to Israel.

In the Beginning

“Whereupon he [Jacob] became very joyful at what he had seen and heard; and he poured oil on the stones; because on them the prediction of such great benefits was made. He also vowed a vow, that he would offer sacrifices upon them, if he lived, and returned safe; and if he came again in such a condition, he would give the tithe of what he had gotten to G-d. He also judged the place to be honourable, and gave it the name of Bethel: which, in the Greek tongue, is Θεία Ἑστία, [the house of God].”

- Flavius Josephus of the Antiquities of the Jews — Book I; Chapter 19

Cyril Zooms In

“The family is a haven in a heartless world.” - Christopher Lasch

This week's parasha, Vayeitzei (“and he went out”), introduces us to the first chapter of Jacob’s life, the third and last patriarch. Threatened by his twin brother Esau, he has to leave his home for Charan. There, he is going to found a family. But it is not going to be all rosy and easy. Somehow, his trials are mirroring his grandfather’s and father’s family issues: a barren wife, a hostile environment, hostile family members, a hard life of labour. Little by little, the situation is improving and Jacob is rewarded. He has four wives, 12 sons and 1 daughter. He gains a lot of wealth through God’s help and hard work although Laban, his father in law, is a deceiver. Jacob is accumulating “movable” wealth (flocks, animals, servants, probably precious metals) but not fields or houses. This is the sign he does not intend to stay in exile in Charan but wants to go back to his father’s land. Perhaps a hint at what we should do today? At the end of the parasha, Jacob escapes Laban’s clutches with his family and his wealth. However, Laban catches up with him. Laban’s intentions are not peaceful. This is why God has to appear in a dream to warn Laban to leave Jacob unscathed. Although Jacob is the symbol of reconciliation and harmony, he must defend himself vigorously against Laban. During their altercation, we understand that something dramatic is brewing. Rachel stole Laban’s idols and Jacob’s inadvertent curse at the thief will be the cause of her premature death. The following parashas will include more tensions and drama between Esau and Jacob, between Jacob’s family and his Canaanite neighbors, and within Jacob’s family. But for now Jacob’s family is unbroken and ready to settle peacefully in Canaan, the land previously promised by God to Abraham and Isaac. Wishing you and your family a heavenly, restful and joyful Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom! C.B.

Weekly Riddle

A monkey is trying to climb a coconut tree. He takes 3 steps forward and slips back 2 steps downward. Each forward step is 30 cm and each backward step is 40 cm. How many steps are required to climb a 100 cm tree?

(Guess before you take a peek. The answer is on the next page).

Rav Question - שאלת רב

Sarah, Rivqa, Leah, Rahel, Bilha, and Zilpa - by order of marriage.
Did you ever sing on Passover the number 6 of Mi Yodeya with “shesh eimahot” - six mothers?

And if you did, what did you do with the number 4?

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Biblical Quiz - Vayetse

Kids: Yaעaqov goes to aran. What do we already know about aran?  Teens: On the way to aran, Yaעaqov stays at Bet-El. What was the previous name of Bet-El?  Adults: Reuven goes into the field and brings to his mom “Dudaim.” What is it? What’s its English name?

Parasha: Yayetse - Bereshit: (Genesis) 28:10-32:3

Historical Context: Location: from the Negev's Beer Shevaע to the city of Ḥaran at Aram Naharayim and to Har HaGilעad, back towards Knaעan. Creation Time: the second half of the 22nd century. General calendar: approx. 1672-1600 bce.

Parashort: Yaעaqov leaves Be'er Shevaע and journeys to Ḥaran. On the way, while he sleeps he dreams of a ladder stretching from heaven and earth, with angels ascending and descending on it; G-d appears in the dream and promises to Yaעaqov that the land upon which he lies will be given to his descendents. In Ḥaran, Yaעaqov stays with and works for his uncle Lavan: seven years for Leah, seven years for Rahel and another six years for cattle in return for his labor. Yaעaqov prospers and has 12 kids from his 4 wives. After 6 years, he leaves Ḥaran in secret, fearing that Lavan would stop him. Lavan pursues Yaעaqov, but is warned by G-d in a dream not to harm him. Lavan and Yaעaqov make a pact on Mount Gilעed, attested to by a pile of stones, and Yaעaqov continues his journey back home.

Haftara: Vayetse - Hoshea 11:7-12:12 - וְעַמִּ֥י תְלוּאִ֖ים

Haftit: The prophet Hosheyaע explains how the Israelites are torn between returning to G-d and worshiping pagan religions like Ashera & Baעal. Hosheyaע pleads with the Ten Tribes but they are unwilling to repent, but adds that G-d will never totally destroy his people, the Israelites. Hosheyaע continues to warn the Israelites that if they don’t make teshuva G-d will exile them from their Land. Hosheyaע points out two specific sins that Bene Yisrael must stop committing: fraud and idol worshiping. The prophet continues with words of reassurance that after their exile G-d will return the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.

Connection to the Parasha: Our Parasha relates how Yaעaqov escaped from his brother, ‘Esav, and fled to Lavan’s home where he married Leah and Rael, Bilha and Zilpa.

Speechless in the Parasha - Vayetse

The parasha describes different types of goats and sheeps.

How many kinds were there? Can you imagine its colors?

Biblical Quiz - Answers - Vayetse

Kids: Avraham lived there. Eliezer found Rivqa there. Teens: Luz.  Adults: Dudaim is a type of fruit. Mandrakes in English.

Makom baParasha - Maḣanayim - מַֽחֲנָֽיִם

Maḣanayim - מַחֲנַיִם‎ - is a place near Jabbok, in today’s Jordan side of the Jordan River, mentioned a number of times by the Bible.

Maḣanayim literally means 2 camps. The place was given its name by Ya’akov. After Ya’akov and his family departed from his father-in-law Lavan, he was met by angels of G-d. Ya’akov said "This is G-d's camp", and he called the place Maḣanayim.

(It is located on the map just about where the mark (I) indicating the Jabbok River is.

The city later on became one of the Levite cities on the border between the territories of the tribes of Manasseh and Gad.

After King Shaul died, his general, Avner, enthroned Shaul's son Ish-boshet at Maḣanayim. David fled to Maḣanayim when his son Avshalom revolted.

Maḣanayim later on became the center of one of the 12 districts that King Shlomo appointed officials over, to provide food one month a year for the King and his household.

The precise location of Maḣanayim is very uncertain. The most recognized place as Maḣanayim is Tell edh Dhahab el Gharbi, located in Jordan, north of the Jabbok River, 10 miles east of the Jordan River, about 33 miles northeast of the Dead Sea, and in the same general area as Jabesh-Gilead - Yavesh Gil’ad.

Today, Maḣanayim is a kibbutz in northern Israel, located in the upper Galilee, half way between the sea of Galilee and the Lebanese border. Today it has a population of 800-850.

Time to Smile

“Thanksgiving - celebrating the day Americans fed undocumented aliens from Europe.”

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha Thought - Vayetse

Humbly following the first Israeli Kidnapped being released from Jihadist captivity, it is inevitable noticing that the parasha mirrors current affairs: ‘Give my wives and my children -  תְּנָה אֶת נָשַׁי וְאֶת יְלָדַי” - Yaaqov demands from Lavan. More so, at the shabbat minḣa we will read parashat Vayishlaḣ, “and he sent,” hinting at the price that we pay for the release.

Lavan indeed let all the wives and children go, not some, and all at once. What leverage did our father Yisrael have over Lavan that we Medinat Yisrael don’t have over the Jihadists?
Let’s pray that as the angels ascended and descended the Jacob Ladder, so may our prayers for the full return of the Kidnapped ascend to Heaven, heard, and descent back fully answered. Shabbat shel Shalom. tbs

A Story - of assuming

Last week, a friend messaged me on Messenger, asking me in pleasant words, "How are you?"

I looked at the question, but at that time I was just boiling water for coffee and washing the dishes. The kids also came home at that time and took all my attention.

I remembered after an hour or so to get back to her. But for her the time was up. She saw that I was still logged on, and gave me a whole series of message-lectures on reciprocity as a basic rule in life, of coming from a place of respect and love, that I do not respect her, and that if I don’t answer I probably don’t worth her friendship and time.

And I was just washing the dishes...

This morning, I was angry at my child, who was delayed on the path from the street to home.

“What could take her so long?! Surely, dreaming as always,” I thought to myself, as my impatience grew.

I shouted at her from the lobby, "come on, come already!"

She came after a minute to me with two innocent eyes and one hand full with flowers, muttering: "I just picked these for you, mom, cause flowers make you smile."
And I smiled and felt sorry...

Mila baParsha - Even and Avanim

'He took of the stones of the place' (Gen. 28:11) There is a difficulty here because later it says 'He took the stone' (ibid, v 18) was there one stone or were there more? Rashi resolves this difficulty by quoting a Gemara which says, 'The stones began to quarrel with each other. One said "The righteous man will rest his head on me" and the other said "The righteous man will rest his head on me," the Holy One Blessed be He immediately made them into one stone.' Thus at the beginning there were a number of stones and afterwards there was only one stone. Rashbam, R' A. ibn Ezra, and Radak, all resolve this difficulty by explaining the first passage as meaning 'He took ONE of the stones of the place.' Rabbi David Hojda pointed out that Maharal mi-Prague in his Gur Aryeh argues that Rashi's interpretation fits the understanding of the Qabala, while those who search for plain meaning err. Maharal explains that were it as is claimed by the commentators who say there was only one stone, it should have said 'He took a stone,' but if he took some from many then 'of the stones of the place' is appropriate for he took some of them, for they are many from many 'of the stones of the place,' but a single stone is not 'some of.'

‘Am Yisrael Ḣazaq Ḣai VeQayam - עם ישראל חזק חי וקיים

The Gaza War, the Eighth Day War, enters its eighth week. We strengthen the hands of Am Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael, of Israel’s army, its security forces, its citizens, and its residents. We mourn the loss of life of nearly 800 innocent civilians - men and women, young and old - who were murdered by Hamas Jihadist Gazans on October 7; and the nearly 450 fallen soldiers, police and security officers who bravely fought evil of the highest order. We pray for the release of over 200 kidnapped, of whom nearly 50 are kids and elderly; and for the full recovery of the body and soul of the over 7,600 wounded. The IDF is strong and resolute to win this war of freedom from decades of terror, and to restore the safety of all Israeli citizens and the Jewish people in their own ancestral homeland.
