• Welcome and Thank You from Principal Serin

• Citywide Behavioral Expectations

• SEL survey sent to parents via class dojo regarding what parents and students think children’s  needs are and what parents need as support.
• Parent University is starting so that parents can receive training on these needs.
• Through our SEL lessons we are encouraging students to share their feelings.  Parents are coming and asking for consequences or student removal if their child has an issue.  We encourage parents to look at Citywide Behavioral Expectations so that they are clear as to the appropriate consequences that are allowed per infraction.

• PBIS

• We have been strategically explaining student expectations in the classroom and the hallway by giving examples and non-examples.  We have been having discussions to help them understand the appropriate behaviors.  We are using a reward system, Penguin Pesos.  Once students have earned enough pesos they can win prizes and trips.  Students will be taught to defend themselves by using their words and not violence in an articulate way.  We want students to feel protected, happy, healthy and safe.

• After-School Programs

• Basketball team tryouts have occurred.  Practice will start next week.
• Ms. Cyr is organizing the cheerleading tryouts and that will occur next week.
• Another after school activity is being decided.
• Students on sports teams are expected to show POWER, be a role model and show perseverance,

• Modification to Student Lunch Periods

• Due to behavior issues during lunch, we have changed to 4 lunch periods with only 2 classes in the lunchroom and at recess at a given time.  There has been a huge improvement in behavior as the student-to-adult ratio is lower.

• MTSS

• MTSS has begun.  Teachers are meeting with students that are performing significantly below grade-level.  Research based curriculum is being used to support these students.  Data will be collected every 6-8 weeks.
• Tier 1 supports given by classroom teacher
• Tier 2 supports iReady and Double Dose Fundations
• Tier 3 Supports: Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI),  S.P.I.R.E Program, Orton Gillingham Program.

• Formal Assessments

• These assessments have been completed.
• Iready online assessments (Online math and reading assessments.)
• F&P reading assessments.  (Teacher given assessment that determines independent and guided reading levels.)
• Acadience Assessment measures the acquisition of early literacy skills.
• Data shows that the majority of our students are struggling with phonics, vocabulary and comprehension.  As a result, upper grade students are receiving phonics instruction in small groups.  Teachers are also being extensively trained in Fundations.
• Students also struggle with number fluency and number sense,  abacus and rekenreks have been purchased to support students.
• F&P levels are used to provide guided reading instruction.

• Superintendent Listening and Learning Tour

• Ms. Dimango will visit Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
• Parents are invited to come and broadcast via Zoom.

• Parent Workshops

• Coffee with Principal Serin will occur on November 10th.
• Parents that cannot attend can attend via Zoom
• Mr. Serin has been randomly calling different parents to check in and ask questions.  He has been enjoying the intimate conversations and learning about how parents feel and their feedback about our school.  He has been sharing the information with our assistant principals.
• Parent University Workshops:  Parents please keep an eye out for an email detailing upcoming workshops.

• PTA News/Updates:

• The 2022-2023 SLT Training will take place on Monday, November 14, 2022 from 3:30PM to 5:30PM. John Bowne High School is hosting this in-person event.
• Parents request that homework is posted on DOJO in case students neglect to bring homework home.  Most teachers send home a weekly calendar.  Mr. Serin will ask teachers to post the sheet on DOJO or in a digital folder.
• Harvest Dance is this Friday and we are sold out.  All grades are joining.
• The candy sale is going well.
• Next Monday our school is celebrating students with birthdays in September or October.  63 students are coming.  We will have a small cupcake and candy to celebrate.
• Every morning the school recites the Pledge of Allegiance and we announce students’ birthdays.  Students celebrating  their birthday will get a small token and Mr. Serin will call families to congratulate them.
