Ancient bomb found in Germany

By Lennox Ogando

On September 1st in Frankfurt, Germany, an old bomb from World War II was found during construction.  Over 60,000 people were forced to evacuate because the bomb is over 70 years old and might be unstable. The type of bomb found was an HC series bomb which are strong enough to destroy an entire city block.

The HC series also known as Blockbusters earned their name because they had the power to destroy an entire city block. The HC series made the HC 4000,HC 8000,and the HC 12000  but the HC 4000 was the most produced bomb. The HC bombs get their number from their weight, so you can only imagine the size of a 4000 pound bomb. These bombs were made with thin casing that allowed them to carry approximately  three-quarters of their weight in explosives.

The HC 4000 bombs were very effective in the war blowing up factories, trenches and bridges. However, ten percent of these bombs never went off and they were covered in debris and forgotten. Seventy years after the war ended, they lay under ground still active and unstable, there are many cases where old HC bombs have been found. In Greece, an HC 4000 bomb was found in Thessaloniki forcing a massive evacuation of 72,000 people and another bomb was found in the Rhineland near Koblenz but there was no evacuation. Every year German officials are called out because there is an old bomb that has been found accidently. The war ended 70 years ago.  Though there is peace in Europe, these old bombs serve as a dark reminder of our past.
