Dear Kiva Community,

The Children’s Kiva Montessori Elementary/Middle School Board of Directors (Board) wanted to take a moment to provide transparency to our community.  The local newspaper has reached out for information about our budget shortfall, leadership changes, enrollment numbers, and performance improvement status. We expect continued media coverage as we work through these transitions. It is our intent to be as transparent as possible and provide you with timely information.

As your Board, we continue to work closely with our temporary Interim Head of School, Alexia Hudson-McGrath and with Re1 administration and board members to ensure our school’s continued success. We are grateful for their support and guidance through each step of our transition.  We welcome two new board members: Melissa Gould and Jordan Meyers, who also offer their support, talents, and passion for our Montessori program.  We continue to seek qualified school leadership and Board development.

The Board is currently working diligently to ensure we have a balanced budget for this year and each year hereafter. As we have shared with you previously, there was a significant budget shortfall. The Board approved a budget in April for a much higher projected student enrollment and did not achieve this goal. As a result, we have had to layoff staff members to ensure the success and financial viability of our school.  Each layoff has been difficult for everyone involved.  As of October 26, 2018 our ‘Specials’ will be integrated into daily Montessori lessons and works, rather than provided separately. With that being said, it is with heavy hearts that we announce that our Drama teacher, Mr. Dusty, our Art teacher, Ms. Celeste, and our SPARK and Movement teacher, Mr. Randy, will be leaving our school.  We will greatly miss their presence, influence, and talents they have shared with us.  We thank them for being dedicated members of our Kiva community and wish them all the best as they take on new endeavors.

The Board would also like to inform the Kiva community that over half a dozen grievances have been heard in the last two months. The topics of these grievances range from personnel, communication, and Board communication and functions. The Board cannot speak to any personnel related grievances, but would like to assure you that each were taken seriously and acted upon professionally. As to communication, the Board is working hard to ensure we are sharing accurate and timely information with our parents, students, staff, and community. The Board has made several imperative changes to processes and functions in the last month and we hope to continue these positive steps forward.

We have an amazing staff of Montessorians and supporters who are vigilantly working with each of our students to support increased academic success. Join us in helping our students achieve greatness this year.

While change can bring sensationalism and interest from others, we assure you that OUR story will continue to be: Children’s Kiva Montessori School strives to provide a vibrant and engaging learning environment based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori that supports all students’ academic excellence and ability to become empowered, creative, lifelong learners responsible for themselves, their community, and their environment.

We appreciate your ongoing support and encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or comments at bod@kivacharter.org.

Respectfully,

Children’s Kiva Montessori Elementary/Middle School Board of Directors
