2024 “Research to Practice” Transit Symposium
The 2024 “Research to Practice” Transit Symposium will take place online October 22-24, 2024 As the transit industry is poised to take advantage of the largest transit and rail investment in our lifetimes, the symposium provides a platform where transit experts share insights on how evidence-based research is being or can be used to make the most of these opportunities in a changing environment. This year’s symposium will focus on the following topics:

In addition to the opening and closing plenaries, the symposium features both Researcher and practitioner sessions as well as regular presentation sessions.

Interagency Transit Data Webinar #27 Statewide Measurement of Transit Options, Access, and Equity: August 21

Leveraging comprehensive GTFS schedule data and powerful cloud computation, multiple state DOTs are now implementing consistent statewide measures of access to destinations and transportation equity. This webinar will highlight three related efforts. First, MassDOT adopted a new standard for accessibility analysis in 2023 (Conveyal, a web-based tool that enables rapid, detailed analysis of access to opportunities). Since then, the MassDOT Office of Transportation Planning has documented a broad spectrum of use cases and developed technical guidance for planning transit priority, active transportation, and other projects. Second, California's new Route Illustrations tool combines optimal trip path data from Conveyal with existing GTFS data in the Cal-ITP data warehouse. Through a series of maps, it illustrates the complexity transit riders face when the optimal routing varies greatly depending on their exact departure time. These routing options often include higher fare or less frequent services. These maps have supported discussion at CalSTA’s Transit Transformation Task Force, which convenes stakeholders to make recommendations to the legislature about California’s transit future. Finally, the Caltrans Transportation Equity Index (EQI) is a statewide spatial screening tool designed to identify transportation-based priority populations. It integrates transportation and socioeconomic indicators, reflects low-income status and Tribal land status, and includes several statewide indicators of access to work and non-work destinations.
