Teaching Notes | Social media can be distracting, disrupt sleep patterns, and negatively affect students with peer pressure, inappropriate exposure, and bullying. Be mindful of the negative and positive aspects. |
Lesson | ||
Greeting | 5 minutes | Greet students - Have students walk around the room and introduce themselves to two classmates. When they introduce themselves, have them also share 2-3 social media sites they are familiar with or have heard of. |
Sharing | 5 minutes | Introduce the video topic to students by saying: Today we're going to watch a video that explores how to build and maintain positive and healthy friendships online. Have students share with their elbow partner something positive they have seen on social media in the past week. |
Learning Activity | 10 minutes | Activity Steps: Show the Teen Voices: Friendships and Boundaries video (4:49 minutes). (Note: The video is also available in Spanish, and you can also use the video player to turn on subtitles.) Video: Teen Voices: Friendships and Social Media | Common Sense Education Pass out the Discussion questions worksheet. Have students fill it out independently. Answers may vary: (Common Sense Education KEY) Once students have completed the discussion questions worksheet, have students share with their elbow partner how they answered the questions. After sharing with their elbow partner, ask for volunteers to share with the class. . |
Message | 3 minutes | Ask students: What can students do to make their social media and interactions more positive in their daily life? Limit time? Change perspective? Understand that it is not always reality what you may see. |
