Sugaree String Society - Oldtime

October 9th | 5:15 PM | Main Stage

Sugaree String Society carries the torch of Pete Seeger’s boundless optimism and Woody Guthrie’s critical and clever tongue, accompanied by mountain banjo and a high lonesome sound in the tradition of bluegrass trailblazers Earl Scruggs and Dr. Ralph Stanley.

With defiant wit and innate musicality, Western Pennsylvanian folksinger Jodi Jones beautifies the bitter truths of our modern age into song as an act of radical love and solidarity.

Alongside her, Brendan Macie wields the five string banjo like an extension of his arm - guided by tradition but never bound by it, bringing a unique sensitivity to old-time repertoire tunes and contemporary protest songs alike.

Godi Godar

October 9th | 6:00 PM | The Grove

Godi Godar Moteke Molanga of the Bantu Ntomba community grew up in the village of Ikoko Bonginda, at the edge of Lake Tumba in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Grandson of the chief, he was next in line to lead, but a vivid boyhood vision foretold him leaving his home, traveling to an unknown land, and one day returning to support and protect his people.

When Godar was sixteen, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Dean DeBoer, showed up in his village. Godi's grandfather insisted they live together and learn each other's languages and cultures. At the end of his three year stay, Dean invited Godar to travel to the US with him. Thus began the first phase of Godar's childhood dream coming to fruition. He has lived in Durham, NC since his arrival in 1988.

23 years later Godar’s mother, Nsaba Koko, pled with her son to find a way to protect the land, waters, and forests surrounding his village. Logging companies were destroying the livelihood of his people, endangering wildlife, and polluting the air.  Koko asked him, “How can we protect our homelands?” With that question, Godar's purpose in leaving his tribe became clear.

In response to his mother’s pleas, Godar started Go Conscious Earth (GCEarth) in 2012. For many years, Godar and volunteers have worked tirelessly to protect land rights, wildlife, clean water, and carbon rich rainforests. Their success has not only protected the health of people, animals, and ecosystems, but also proven the success of community-based anti-poverty initiatives to the DRC government.

Godi plays the Congolese balaphone.

Syn3

October 10th | 5:15 PM | Main Stage

The Triangle is fortunate to have so many great bands covering the music audiences want to hear. It almost doesn't matter the tune you want to dance to on a Friday night—you're likely to find a solid live cover. Good tunes, busting it on the floor and your favorite adult beverage—what could be wrong? Well....nothing. And that's exactly where SYn3 comes in...

Like you, we know the value of listening to the deeper parts of a band's catalog—the tunes only true fans know. Now and then, listening to a deep cut set of tunes by just a few bands is just what you need after the week. Sometimes, only those bands and singer/songwriters know your day!

We are a group of life-long, experienced and trained musicians providing an authentic, acoustic UK & US musical experience as possible. In addition to focusing on Joni Mitchell, Jethro Tull and Neil Young, we play acoustic music and arrangements popular in the UK that never made it to the US. Radiohead, Irish jigs or a few deep cut Zeppelin tunes anyone?

Sure, we got the notes, but we also focus on the sound quality and feel of our covers—it's central to who we are as a band. Yes, reproducing those critical textures as clearly as possible is vital to any tune and we make things authentic there as well!
