Dear band students and parents,

This letter contains information regarding the North Lincoln H.S. Jazz Ensemble. Please read the following information carefully if interested in participating in this award-winning group.

The Jazz Ensemble is an ex-curricular group that meets after school during the spring semester.  It typically performs two concerts, and may also do “run out gigs” such as performances at retirement homes, community events or school functions, and jazz festivals.  The traditional instrumentation of the Jazz Ensemble calls for a set number of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, drum set, electric guitar, bass guitar and auxiliary percussion.  However, depending on student interest, all instruments may join the group in order to fill out instrumentation and balance.  For example, clarinets may have the opportunity to play a tenor or baritone saxophone parts in jazz band if the players in concert bands do not participate in the ensemble.

Auditions and Rehearsals

Auditions will be Tuesday, November 27 from 3:30-6:30pm.  Students will perform a short jazz except and two scales in a swing style.  Rehearsals for the Jazz Ensemble will be every Monday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm in the band room starting Thursday, November 29.  Students who play piano, guitar, bass and percussion may be assigned to different parts depending on interest levels regarding these instruments.  Students who are not currently enrolled in a band class should schedule a time to meet with the director in order to determine abilities and music reading skills.

Ensemble Expectations and Fees/Performance Attire

Because the Jazz Ensemble does not receive any funding from Lincoln County Schools, members will be assessed a $75 fee that will cover the purchase of music, additional instructors and travel.  The $75 fee will be due on Thursday, January 3.  Checks may be made payable to NL Band Boosters.  Students who are members of the Jazz Ensemble are expected to uphold high expectations with regards to behavior and musicality.  Students who demonstrate excessive tardiness or absences to rehearsals will be excused from the group WITHOUT refund of fees.  Concert attire will be all black.  Students are responsible for providing their own concert attire.  ABSOLUTELY NO JEANS!

Attached is the calendar of events for the Jazz Band. Due to the nature of this ensemble, additional performances will be announced if the opportunity arises. Plenty of notice will be given for students and families.

Final Thoughts

We are very fortunate to offer this musical opportunity to our students.  Jazz music is rich in tradition and culture, and I feel that this is an exceptional musical style that can be very rewarding to study and perform.  In many ways, this ensemble is designed to be our “relaxed” group… students will be encouraged to make the music their own and have fun.  Please do not hesitate to contact the band office if you have questions and/or comments.  An official concert schedule is included.  Once membership is set, students and parents will sign a membership contract.
