Upper School Drama Program

Fall Semester 2018

Hello! Mr. Whittaker here. Below is an overview of the new Drama Program at The Ambrose School. Some changes were implemented last year, but now we have it in full! I’m very excited about this and look forward to next school year. The goal is to give students the opportunity to learn about Stageplays both in front and behind the curtain. While 7th Grade Essentials and 8th Grade Drama remain the same, we have some new class additions and a tweak to High School Drama!

The biggest change is the incorporation of the Backstage Management class. There have always been students who wanted to learn more about backstage, but there’s never enough time to truly teach them. Not anymore! And those who want to take both, can!

If you have any questions after reading below, feel free to email me at jwhittaker@theambroseschool.org and I’ll respond as soon as I’m able!

7th Grade - Drama Essentials will be offered for 7th graders interested in participating in drama during 8th - 12th grades (class of 2022 is exempt from this requirement). This is a prerequisite for 8th Grade and High School Drama productions. While it is not a prerequisite for Backstage Management, it is recommended. Students will learn the basics of performing and apply their skills. Classes will meet once a Week.

High School Play - We are proud to announce that next year’s high school play production will be Hamlet! 9th through 12th graders will audition for parts in the High School Play the Monday and Tuesday before Retreat (August 13th and 14th) in the afternoon (more details will be given at the time of registration). If you can not make the scheduled time, please contact Mr. Whittaker (jwhittaker@theambroseschool.org). Also, audition packets will be available online and in the office at the time of registration. Students interested in acting in the High School Play should register for the class and be prepared for auditions. Students will know what role, if any, they are to play by the first day of classes (August 20). Students who do not receive a part in the High School Play have the option of transferring to Backstage and/or the Acting Preceptorial. Classes will meet twice a week and Wednesday Club hour.

High School Backstage Management - This class is for students who want to participate in the High School Play from behind the scenes. Students will learn a wide array of skills! Including how to design a set and stage, preparing costumes, working with a budget, and even some directing! They will be the Run Crew the nights of the play, working backstage with the actors and performing scene changes. They will also help with any other preparations in the weeks leading up to performance night (rehearsals, keeping track of props, marketing, etc.). Classes will meet twice a Week and Wednesday Club Hour.

High School Acting Preceptorial - This class is for students who want to improve their auditioning and acting skills. Students will learn how to cold read, audition from memorization, perform gripping monologues, and work well with other actors. Classes will meet once a week.

Spring Semester 2019

8th Grade Play - 8th graders will be offered the opportunity of participating in a play during the Spring Semester. Class size will be limited to 25 students. Auditions will be held during the semester. Naturally progressing from essentials, this class will grow the students’ skills and prepare them for High School Drama. Classes will meet twice a week and Wednesday Club Hour.

High School Backstage Management - Students will continue to learn a wide array of skills! Including how to design a set and stage, preparing costumes, working with a budget, and even some directing! This semester, students will help with the 5th and 8th Grade Plays.
