Elbow Fracture Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Rehabilitation Protocol
Weeks 0-2
- Remain in splint at all times. Do not remove dressing.
- 1st postoperative appointment with Dr. Pastor for splint and suture removal.
Weeks 2-8
- Begin physical therapy and/or home exercises.
- Elbow flexion - 140 degrees
- Elbow extension - 0 degrees
- Supination - 80 degrees
- Pronation - 80 degrees
- Goal is to achieve full elbow range of motion by 8 weeks from surgery.
- No lifting more than the weight of a full coffee cup.
Weeks 8+
- Ok to begin gentle and progressive lifting exercises starting with 1 pound and slowing increasing weight over several weeks.
- The following timetable can be considered as a minimum for return to most activities:
- Ski 6 months
- Golf 6 months
- Weight Training 6 months
- Tennis 6 -8 months
- Swimming 6-8 months
- Throwing 6 months
