Dear Families,

We have become aware of a troubling post that has been shared on the social media platform TikTok. The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on Friday, December 17. To be clear, the post appears to be part of a national TikTok trend and did not originate in our school district or any others in Wyoming. While we do not believe there is a credible threat, we have been in contact with the Sublette County Sheriff's Department for precautionary purposes.

This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online.

As always, thank you for your help as we work to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jenks

*** ILLNESS & ACTIVITIES ***

Our schools have been hit hard this week with illness impacting students and staff members alike. This illness has greatly impacted our transportation department and we do not have the personnel to transport the high school wrestling and basketball teams to their tournaments this weekend. We anticipate having a decision about high school swimming on Thurs. 12/16.

Please help us stop the spread of illness at school by having your child stay home if they are sick or displaying symptoms of illness. We appreciate your help in this matter!

Parent Survey: Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan

Hello Sublette 9,

SCSD #9 is set to receive approximately $865,000 in federal funds as part of the American Rescue Plan (ARP), also known as ESSER III. These funds are to be used, among other things, to help close learning gaps that may have occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic, support and enhance academic initiatives currently in place, and purchase supplies and equipment to make sure our schools maintain clean and healthy learning environments. In order to receive these funds, school districts must submit a Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan. This is somewhat similar to the COVID-19 Mitigation Plan that was developed and shared with the community earlier this school year. In the plan, the district is required to address eight mitigating measures for the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this brief survey, you will find the eight mitigating measures and a brief description of how the school district is currently addressing them. Please indicate whether or not you believe the school district's current practice for each mitigating measure should remain the same or be changed. The survey closes at noon on Fri. Nov. 19, 2021.

I appreciate you for taking the time to provide us with input regarding this matter.

Here is the link to the survey.

Thanks!

Dr. Jenks

Superintendent

The School Calendar has been updated to reflect changes to Early Release days.

September 3, 2021

I have been thoroughly impressed with the staff and students here at Sublette County School District #9 as I have observed and interacted with them over the first week of school. I think we’ve had a great start to the school year and it's fun to see so much excitement and energy. We have great expectations for all students and we look forward to seeing what they can accomplish inside and outside the classroom throughout the year.

One thing that we don’t want to dampen our excitement for this school year is the COVID-19 pandemic. As was expected, we have seen our fair share of quarantines and isolations due to positive cases of COVID-19. We expected this to happen and that is why we developed the COVID-19 Mitigation Plan that was shared with everyone a couple weeks ago. The plan was built to be flexible and adaptable based on the status of the pandemic in our community. If community spread of the virus were to continue to increase, the plan could be updated to be more restrictive than it is now. We hope that does not happen, but our goal is to keep students in school for face to face instruction because we believe it drastically improves outcomes for many, if not all.

Here are a few highlights of the COVID-19 Mitigation Plan that I want to review with everyone:

I know and understand that there are various opinions about some of the recommendations listed above. We are trying to do our best to respect those opinions while also keeping our schools open and safe for everyone. I remain very optimistic about the school year and I want to thank parents and the community for their continued support of our schools!

Charles Jenks, Ed.D.

Introduction to the Community

Greetings Puncher fans! My name is Charles Jenks and I have been hired as the new superintendent for Sublette County School District #9. I am excited and honored to work in this great school district. My wife and I have five children with ages ranging from 3 to 16. We have only been here a few weeks, but we’ve already been impressed with the kindness and generosity of so many people who have reached out to us. We truly look forward to making ourselves a part of this community. I want to thank Coach Visser, the high school football team, and others for showing up to our house to help unload the Uhaul and trailer. That was awesome!

As the new superintendent, I look forward to working with the Board of Trustees and staff here to ensure the students of this district continue to learn at high levels. My job is to make sure that the vision, mission, values, and goals set forth by the district are upheld and integrated into all the work that we do. Student learning and attainment of essential skills will always be the top priority. Making decisions based on the needs of students will be the focal point of our operations.

During the 2021-22 school year, we will be revisiting the district’s strategic plan and seeking your input. Stakeholder input is vital to creating a strong and cohesive plan that truly represents the values and priorities of Sublette #9. My sense is the communities of Big Piney, Marbleton, and LaBarge take great pride in their schools and want the best outcomes possible for their students. I feel blessed to be working in a school district with such strong support from its community members.

I know it will take me a while to get to know all of you, but I look forward to visiting with you and maybe even working with you in the near future. I am a very optimistic person and I believe great things can be accomplished when people come together to solve problems collaboratively. I truly believe in the power of collective efficacy to address the challenges that we face in education.

As we approach the new school year, please watch for any updates posted to the school website and our Facebook page. We want to do our best to make sure everyone feels ready and prepared for the upcoming school year. Our hope is that we will be able to open the school year with a lot fewer restrictions while still maintaining a safe and clean environment for staff and students.

Go Punchers!

NEWS

We have held interviews with two outstanding candidates for the Superintendent position.  One candidate remains to be interviewed.

Charles Jenks, Fremont Co. SD #6 - Mon. 3/8 @ 3:30 PM

You may watch interviews and provide feedback via the surveys at Superintendent Candidates.

It was very nearly one year ago, when how we operate was radically altered.  The entire school staff, in every department, responded admirably and adjusted to the changes.  We have been most fortunate this school year and have been able to remain in session.  The circumstances have been quite unusual but again the entire school staff, in every department, has responded admirably.  We should not ignore the fact that our students have also responded in a way that should make their parents and teachers proud while it also reaffirms our students desire to be in school.

Keep up the good work!  Let’s continue down the path we are on to help ensure that learning and activities can occur in school for our students!

UPDATES

If you have not yet scheduled your Parent Teacher Conference, you should do so as soon as you can.  Contact your child’s school or teacher.  The conferences are scheduled for next Tuesday (3/9)! Tuesday will also be an Early Release Day (Elem-1:15, MS-1:20, HS-1:30).

Science Fair Time! Great work Rustlers!

--

Twenty middle school students submitted fourteen research projects to the regional science fair held at Western Wyoming Community College February 4-5. Students completed a written research plan, abstract and quad chart to communicate the design, data and results of their project. They also wrote, narrated and recorded a two minute video summarizing their project so it could be assessed by judges. I am proud of their ability to communicate their research using multimedia and writing because due to the restrictions in place they could not travel to the college to present their work in person. We will hold an open house for students to present projects at the BPMS gym on Monday February 22 from 6-7:30 PM. Students will have limited tickets for viewers, available in 30-minute time slots.

The overall science fair champion receives a two-year tuition scholarship at Western. Big Piney Middle School brought home the championship again! A research project designed by the team of Cael Espenscheid and Cole Walton won first overall. Their project began last spring when we brainstormed ideas for projects that needed to take place over summer. The purpose of their Plant Science project was to measure the impacts of irrigating with Direct Flow (creek water) vs Return Flow water. They collected data July-August and analyzed the data this fall.

2. Positive test w/out mask has close contact with others wearing a mask- Positive isolates and masked contacts are quarantined!

3. Positive w/out mask has close contact with unmasked others-Positive isolates and unmasked others quarantine!

The County Public Health Office (CPHO) has now determined that students who exhibit two or more symptoms of COVID - 19 will be sent home until they receive a negative test or are symptom free for FIVE DAYS!

The CPHO has determined that any/all activity attendees in the next season (e.g. concerts, basketball, wrestling etc.) will be required to wear a face covering

Spectator Information for Fall Sports:

Although we are operating under different circumstances, we are very excited to have a fall activity season that allows our students to participate and excel in football, volleyball, and swimming.  The state health department in conjunction with the Wyoming High School Activities Association has given each school guidelines for spectator attendance this fall.  Please note the criteria below if you are interested in following the Punchers this year. All spectators must be able to answer “No” to the COVID screening questions before they will be allowed admittance to any contest home or away.  All spectators should also have a face covering and use them if social distancing outside the family group is not possible.  Please cooperate with home and visiting game administration, you may be asked to leave the contest if you fail to comply with an administrator’s request. We are also making every effort to live stream each home contest.  Please refer to www.sublette9.org for the appropriate link.

Home Volleyball Matches:

●     Each week Big Piney H.S. will produce four game tickets that are given to each player, manager, and coach. Participants may give their four tickets to parents or any friends that they wish.  An additional 100 game tickets will be available for anyone else interested in attending a home volleyball match. Tickets can be picked up at the high school on the Wednesday before each contest from 8:00 - 4:00 pm.  You can also call the high school at 276-3324 to reserve a ticket. Our first two home matches occur on Tuesdays, so tickets will be available on the Monday before these matches.

Away Volleyball Matches:

●     The number of visiting tickets is determined by the host school.  Our team (players, managers, coaches) will be given a certain number of tickets to then pass out to parents, family members, and friends.  Know that the number of tickets for visitors will be very limited and differ from week to week based on the host school’s facilities.

Home Football Games:

●     We are limited to 175 spectators in the home bleachers and or standing along the fence inside the stadium. Visiting spectators are limited to 70 across the field (sitting and standing combined).  Once capacities are reached spectators may view the game from outside the stadium fence.

Away Football Games:

●     As of now, visiting schools are also not using a ticket system. Spectator numbers inside the stadium/field may be limited based on the host school’s facilities.

Home Swim Meets:

●     A ticket system will also be used for home swim meets.  Ticket numbers will be extremely limited to spectators that are willing to help with timing and immediate family.

Away Swim Meets: To be determined by host schools.
