Public Notice: WSCS Board Meeting is on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at 2:30 PM

Considerations for Reopening School

Mountain Home and Glacier High School continue to plan for a safe return to onsite classes and activities for students, working closely with local and state health officials and monitoring COVID-19 trends in Madera County.

When we are safely able to reopen, WSCS will use a phased approach by bringing in small groups of students with safety guidelines in place.

The following safety and cleaning protocols are in place:

  1. Staff and Families sign-in
  2. Advising meetings are held in a large open space, classroom, or outside
  3. Masks or face shields required by employees (unless alone in his/her office) and families 3rd and up
  4. Plexiglass Shields are placed on meeting tables
  5. Hand sanitizer bottles are placed around the school
  6. Cleaning and disinfecting happens twice a day, morning and midday
  7. Frequently Touched Surfaces are identified and cleaned more often. Examples include:

a.        Door knobs/handles

b.      Light switches (unless electronically sensored)

c.      Tables

d.      Student and teacher desktops

e.      Chairs

a.      Sink faucets & handles

b.      Water refill stations.

c.      Restroom surfaces and knobs

d.      Keyboards, tablets, mouse, copy machines, phones, and laptop

e.      Any shared objects

We miss you and your children and look forward to reopening when it is safe to do so.  Between COVID-19 regulations and the Creek Fire, we know this has been a challenging time!   Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you or your students!

Communication is essential!  Many important notices are sent out to parents over ParentSquare AND to students over StudentSquare. Have you signed up? www.parentsquare.com

Is your student having difficulty logging into their chromebook, email, or School Pathways?

If you are having trouble, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/PULUd58dbZs1CjFX9 and we will try to resolve the issue as quickly as we can.

PICTURE DAYS

We are working on a method of holding (safe) picture days!

Stay Tuned!

Madera County Educational Resources & Services

MHS and GHS parents have access to a wealth of resources through Madera County Superintendent of Schools’ resource center!  The center has an online catalog where you can order books, videos, art prints, and science & other kits.  Weekly pick-up and delivery to our campus is available so you do not need to travel down the hill to Madera.  In addition, you have automatic access to digital resources.  A few examples: Enchanted Learning, Khan Academy, California Streaming, Britannica Learning Zone, Ancient World, Biographies, to name a few.

Please visit madERS.org  Your Advising Teacher can also set up a Zoom meeting with you & madERS personnel for a tutorial!

TIPS AND TRICKS

Zoom calls can be frustrating, especially when trying to login. Here are a few suggestions to try when you get stuck trying to get into a meeting.

1. Prior to your Zoom meeting, restart your computer: This often solves many problems and speed issues.

2. Try and try again:  If you are having trouble logging into your Zoom meeting, try again. Sign off completely and try to sign in again. Check your links to ensure that you have the correct link for the correct class.

3. Call the front desk: Someone can then notify your teacher that you are having trouble.

4. Email or Parentsquare your teacher: Your teacher will not be able to check emails once class has started, but they will need to know why you were absent.

5. Try using a headset or earbuds: This often solves the problem.

6. Notify the teacher that you might need to turn off the video:  If during the Zoom meeting your internet speed is slow, try turning off your video and just use your mic to see if the sound is working more efficiently. This may require approval from the teacher.

New Book Review

Cooper Vega doesn’t have a ghost of a chance of being popular…. Or does he?

Cooper’s family moves so often that he’s practically invisible at any school he attends. Now they’ve relocated to the town of Stratford – where nobody even makes an effort to learn Cooper’s name. To them, he’s just….whatshisface.

Cooper’s parents feel bad about moving him around so much, so they get him a fancy new phone. Almost immediately, it starts to malfunction. First there’s a buzzing. Then there’s a weird glare on the screen. Then that glare starts to take on the form of … a person?

It’s not just a person trapped inside Cooper’s phone. It’s a boy named Roderick who says he lived in the time of William Shakespeare – and had a very tangled history with the famous playwright. Cooper thinks his phone has gone haywire, but there’s nothing he can do to get rid of Roderick.

In the hands of #1 bestselling author Gordon Korman, Whatshisface is the hilarious story of how sometimes things have to go very, very, wrong before they start going very, very right.

Poems of the Month

October

The month is amber.

Gold, and brown.

Blue ghosts of smoke

Float through the town,

Great V’s of geese

Honk overhead,

And maples turn

A fiery red.

Frost bites the lawn.

The stars ore slits

In a black cat’s eye

Before she spits.

At last, small witches,

Goblins, hags,

And pirates armed

With paper bags,

Their costumes hinged

On safety pins,

Go haunt a night

Of pumpkin grins.

by John Updike

This is Halloween

Goblins on the doorstep,

Phantoms in the air,

Owls on witches’ gatepost

Giving stare for stare,

Cats on flying broomsticks,

Bats against the moon,

Stirrings round of fate-cakes

With a solemn spoon,

Whirling apple parings,

Figures draped in sheets

Dodging, disappearing,

Up and down the streets,

Jake-o’-lanterns grinning,

Shadows on a screen,

Shrieks and starts and laughter –

This is Halloween!
