List of Volunteer Opportunities
Worship Service Preference
My preference is to be scheduled to serve at the following service(s)
Saturday 6:00 p.m.
Sunday 8:45 a.m.
Sunday 11:00 a.m.
Acolyte/Crucifer (3rd-12th grade)
Children/Youth ages 3rd-12th grade who help with lighting the candles (8:45 a.m. service) or carrying the cross (11:00 a.m.) as well as offering and collecting cups during communion.
Assisting Minister (9th grade - adults)
Assisting Ministers sit up front with the clergy during the worship service to help lead prayers from behind the altar and assist with communion distribution.
Communion Assistant (9th grade - adults)
Communion Assistants come forward at the time of communion distribution to assist by distributing the common cup.
Lay Reader (9th grade - adults)
Lay Readers read the lesson for the day during the worship service.
Usher (7th grade - adults)
Ushers arrive approximately 20 minutes early to distribute bulletins and greet worshipers. During the service they help with the collection of the offering and communion dismissal.
Music & Arts Ministries
Adult Choir (9th-12th grade)
The adult choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings and sings on Sundays (Sept. - May) at the 11:00 a.m. service.
The praise band rehearses Saturday afternoons and sings at the 8:45 a.m. service. Participants rotate assigned Sundays.
Youth Choir (6th-12th grade)
The youth choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings and sings at various services throughout the year.
Youth Band (6th-12th grade)
The youth band rehearses on Wednesday evenings and sings at various services throughout the year.
Youth Band/Choir Helpers
Adults who assist the Music and Worship Music with rehearsals and outings.
Children’s Choir Helpers
Adults who assist the Children’s Choir Director with rehearsals.
Handbell Ensemble (7th-12th grade)
The handbell ensemble rehearses and plays as scheduled.
Instrumentalists who would like to be part of the brass ensemble, orchestra, soloists, chamber groups, etc.
Vocalists who would like to serve as cantors or soloists for various services.
Volunteers who work with sound reinforcement, projection and other audio-visual technology as needed at various services.
Behind-the-Scenes Worship Support
Altar Guild - Set Up
The altar guild set up team prepares the altar for worship and the celebration of the sacraments before the service.
Altar Guild - Wash Communion Ware
The altar guild communion washing team cleans up the altar from Holy Communion after the services.
Volunteers are needed to help prepare the sanctuary for festival services.
Sanctuary Clean Up
Volunteers are needed to help keep the sanctuary clean. This can be done at a time that is convenient to their schedules. It includes deep cleaning tasks such as dusting baseboards, dusting furnishings, washing windows and polishing the wood.
Abiding Presence Service Ministries
English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructors
ESL classes are held at the church on Wednesday mornings and evenings.
Food Pantry (9th grade - adult)
The food pantry is held the 4th Saturday of the month. Volunteers are needed for shopping, stocking shelves, greeting guests and other tasks. Senior High youth are able to help behind the scenes with the pantry, but cannot interact with guests in order to maintain guest confidentiality.
The neighborhood pantry is held the 3rd Thursday evening of the month at a local apartment complex. Volunteers are needed to pack food from the church, set up in the complex conference room, greet guests and other tasks.
Children’s Weekend Meal Program
The Children’s Weekend Meal Program provides weekend food bags to students at a local elementary school. Volunteers are needed to donate items, pack bags and deliver them to the school.
Local Community Partners
Carpenter’s Shelter is a local homeless shelter. Abiding Presence provides dinner on the 5th Sunday of the month. Volunteers are needed to cook, deliver and/or help serve the meal. For more information about other volunteer opportunities, visit the Carpenter’s Shelter website.
Ecumenical Community Helping Others serves people in need in the Burke/Springfield area by providing counseling, food, household goods and other services. For more information about volunteer opportunities, visit the ECHO website.
ESL through Technology
ESL through Technology is taught in partnership with ECHO at local high schools.
The Shepherd Center serves older adults in the Fairfax/Burke area by providing transportation, activities and other support. For more information about volunteer opportunities, visit the Shepherd Center website.
Dominican Republic Mission Team
Each summer Abiding Presence sends a mission team to the Dominican Republic. Volunteers can participate in the team and/or be part of the home support team that enables the ministry to happen.
Love Without Boundaries
Love Without Boundaries works internationally with orphaned and impoverished children. Learn more at the Love Without Boundaries website.

Sunday School Teacher
Volunteers who teach preschool through elementary school age Sunday School classes on Sunday mornings from 10:00-10:50 a.m. (Sept. - May). Each class has at least two teachers.
Wednesday Night Youth Group Teacher (9th grade – adult)
Volunteers who teach elementary school youth groups in a rotation model. The lead one lesson for three weeks to three different groups. The volunteers teach from 6:45-7:15 p.m. and then meet for discussion from 7:15-7:45 p.m.
1-2-3 Youth Group Coordinator
Volunteers who plan and lead monthly service and/or fellowship activities for our 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders.
4-5-6 Youth Group Coordinator
Volunteers who plan and lead monthly service and/or fellowship activities for our 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
VBS Station Leader
Volunteers who teach a station during Vacation Bible School. Some planning and preparation is needed. Vacation Bible School is usually held the week after July 4th.
VBS Crew Leader (7th grade - adult)
Volunteers who lead a group of children around to various stations during Vacation Bible School. No planning and preparation is needed. Vacation Bible School is usually held the week after July 4th.
Youth Ministry (7th-12th grade)
Confirmation Sunday School Teacher
Volunteers who teach confirmation youth on Sunday mornings during Sunday School.
Confirmation Student Prayer Partner (9th-adult)
Volunteers who partner with a confirmation youth to pray for, encourage and connect with them.
Senior High Youth Advisor
Volunteers who support our senior high youth ministry.
Small Group Leader
Volunteers who lead a 5-6 week small group experience in their homes. The church provides the curriculum and training for small group leaders.
Midweek Bible Study Leader
Volunteers who lead small group Bible Studies in their homes.
Mainly Music Team
A team of people who lead our Mainly Music ministry on Tuesday mornings. Volunteers help with preparing the adult snack, making bags of goldfish prior to the class, leading singing and much more.
MOPS Discussion Group Leader (DGL)
Moms who are part of MOPS who lead discussions at their tables and organize playdates for their tables.
MOPS Mentor Mom
Experienced moms who volunteer to mentor a table of moms. They attend MOPS meetings, help with organization and support the MOPS moms.
Substitute Weekday Greeter
Volunteers who are willing to substitute for our weekday greeter when she is unavailable.
Community Outreach Events
Fall Festival Planning Team
A team that meets throughout the year to plan the Fall Festival, which is held on a Saturday in October.
Fall Festival Volunteer
Volunteers who help the weekend of the Fall Festival with set up on Friday night, leading activities during the Festival on Saturday, grilling food, and/or with clean up.
A volunteer or team of volunteers who coordinate our annual Trunk-or-Treat event the Wednesday before Halloween.
Community Outreach Team Member
A team of people who discern, coordinate and recruit leadership for opportunities for community outreach such as the Fall Festival.
Sunday Morning Greeter
Sunday morning greeters stand at the main doors of the church to open the door and welcome people before worship at the 8:45 or 11:00 a.m. services. They arrive approximately 20 minutes prior to the service.
Parking Team (for Special Services)
Volunteers who direct parking for special services.
Thanksgiving Eve Reception Coordinator
Volunteer or team of volunteers who coordinate the Thanksgiving Eve reception on years the service is held at Abiding Presence.
Congregational Picnic Coordinator
Volunteer or team of volunteers who coordinate the congregational picnic, which is held the first Sunday in June.
Adult Social Event Host
Volunteers who host an adult social for members of the congregation in their home or at another location.
Abiding Table Helpers
Volunteers who help with the Abiding Table breakfast on Sunday mornings.
Wednesday Gathering Dinner Helper
Volunteers who help in the kitchen with serving and/or clean up during Wednesday Gathering dinners.
Non-OWLs who help with set up, plating, serving and clean up for the monthly OWLs (Older, Wiser Lutherans) luncheon.
Health, Wellness & Care Ministry
Mental Health Team
A team of people who work to reduce stigma and create opportunities for education & support around mental health. The team meets monthly on the 3rd Monday of the month.
Nurses from the congregation are beginning to explore how we can launch a parish nurse ministry that would allow us to have a nurse available for conversation between services on Sunday mornings.
Stephen Ministers undergo 50 hours of training in order to be able to walk with those who are grieving or in need of support through a one-on-one caring relationship.
Volunteers who help with the upkeep of the outside of the church.
Volunteers who help maintain the outdoor gardens.
Volunteers who help with the upkeep of the inside of the church.
Volunteers who help with electrical, plumbing, carpentry, small repairs, etc.
