DESIGN BRIEF
United States for Abortion
usforabortion.org @usforabortion
INTRODUCTION
The United States for Abortion is a community-generated abortion justice design project, which reflects the country’s majority support for abortion rights. We seek to include contributing designers from all 50 US states, as well as Washington D.C. and the colonized territory of Puerto Rico. We also welcome submissions from Indigenous Tribal Nations.
The project seeks to shift pro-choice rhetoric in order to destigmatize abortion, to acknowledge the contemporary mechanisms of abortion, to address the wide range of reasons why people get abortions, and to speak inclusively about who gets abortions.
By enlisting contributors based on state, we respond to abortion as a state issue and emphasize regional political contexts. Through this project, we hope to build solidarity across identities and borders in the collective fight for abortion justice.
The ideological and demographic diversity of the abortion rights public is a powerful strength. Over time, we hope to build a coalition that includes contributors with diverse identities and backgrounds, including gender, race/ethnicity, age, religion, class, political affiliation, parental status, sexuality, citizenship status, and others.
Accepted designs are published on usforabortion.org and available for purchase as t-shirts, stickers, and prints. All proceeds are donated to the National Network of Abortion Funds, supporting their vital work in eliminating financial and logistical barriers to abortion access. The project may expand to include gallery exhibitions or publications.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
We seek design submissions that work to destigmatize abortion, that speak inclusively about who gets abortion, and that accurately represent abortion and the supporting public.
We are building a pluralistic collective of voices that speak to the nuance and complexity of abortion today, addressing critical issues situated at the margins of the broader debate—such as trans rights, abortion as healthcare, and reproductive justice as social, racial, and environmental justice.
The message of your artwork may be broad, it may address specific issues or identities, and/or it may relate to your particular state/region/context. Artwork previously published may be submitted, so long as you own the copyright.
Read Say This, Avoid That by the National Network of Abortion Funds for messaging guidance.
