INT. ELDRED NATIONAL BANK - DAY

The line of bankers grow increasingly impatient as the two tellers struggle to meet the demands of the Eldred citizens eager to get on with their daily errands. They check their watches and distract themselves with their phones as money is dished out as quickly as possible. The security guard at the door nearly falls asleep from the ordinary day.

The young woman calling herself JEWEL barely registers on his radar other than rousing him as she enters the building. Her dark makeup fails to dull the childish innocence on her face as she smiles at him and sweeps her long dark hair over her shoulder. She makes her way towards the line and completely bypasses it to head towards the tellers.

CUSTOMER

Hey! Ma'am! The line is back here.

Jewel gives the man a momentary glance but her attention falls to a little girl standing alongside her impatient mother in line. The girl clutches a doll tightly under her arm and fidgets with boredom.

JEWEL

Hi sweetie. Here.

Jewel reaches inside her tight leather jacket to produce a small, but shiny red gemstone. She places it in the little girl's hand before putting her finger to her lips.

JEWEL

Shhhhh.

The little girl's face brightens with excitement and she stares at the gorgeous stone reflecting the fluorescent lighting. Jewel giggles with delight and bypasses the rest of the line to walk right up to the female teller, lying her cell phone on the counter.

CUSTOMER

Hey! We've been waiting!

Jewel continues to ignore the man as she removes a crystal clear gemstone from her jacket three times the size of the one given to the little girl. The teller stares at it in confusion, but amazement. She picks it up to get a closer look and as she does Jewel twirls her finger in the air before dropping it onto her cell phone's display screen.

A PULSE

Pounds throughout the bank, felt by everyone in attendance. They all look amongst one another in confusion while the teller blinks.

JEWEL

I'm going to need you to get my gifts now. All of it.

Jewel reaches across the counter to snatch the stone back from the female teller. The teller's eyes widen as she comes to realize Jewel's intent to rob the back. She nonchalantly moves her foot to hit the silent alarm.

JEWEL

I imagine you think you're alerting the cops right now but that's just not the case.

The woman taps the button a few more times with her foot and looks to the security guard still struggling to stay awake.

JEWEL

He's not going to be any help.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

The metal detector at the door goes nuts as the man called PUNCH steps inside. Unlike Jewel, he looks like trouble from head to toe with a menacing look in his eyes and an arrogant swagger.

SECURITY GUARD

Hey! Hey! Hold up a second, pal.

Punch turns to the guard and raises his fist, revealing a metal fingerless glove.

SECURITY GUARD

What the hell is that thing?

Before the guard even has a chance to reach for his gun, Punch rears back and strikes with an uppercut that sends the overweight man crashing into the ceiling before smacking the floor with a lifeless thud. Screams fill the bank as everyone scrambles to get as far away from Punch as possible. Jewel throws her head back and giggles with delight. She claps her hands while hopping up and down.

PUNCH

Ladies and gentlemen! There's no need to panic. We're just here for a little monetary withdrawal. So, the sooner that's taken care of the sooner we will be on our way.

The tellers quickly move to deliver bags of cash to the two individuals that they are now absolutely terrified of. Jewel grabs one, grunting as she attempts to lift it before pouting at its weight.

JEWEL

Heavy!

Punch smiles in her direction and lifts the bag up.

PUNCH

A light purse makes for a heavy heart, Jeweleebooley sweetie.

Jewel gushes over the pet name and she musters up the strength to lift the other bag.

PUNCH

Thank ya kindly, folks. You've been a pleasure to do business with.

Punch signals his farewell over his shoulder. Jewel spins around, spotting the little girl in the crowd. She winks and turns to follow Punch out the door.

EXT. ELDRED NATIONAL BANK - MOMENTS LATER

Punch and Jewel are yards away from the bank when she lifts her cell phone up, pressing her thumb to the display screen.

BOOM

The bank explodes at their backs, shooting up in a burst of flames and debris. Punch fails to react even the slightest bit to the destruction, though Jewel throws her head back for a raucous laugh.

ACT ONE

INT. KANE MANOR - DAY

Liz makes her way up the grand staircase of her family home and heads directly for her bedroom to find the door partly open. Slowing her steps, she pushes the door open to peer inside. Entering the room, she walks up to her bed where a black gown is neatly laid out. After only a moment, realization hits and her eyes angrily narrow on the garment.

LIZ

Mother.

INT. UNDERGROUND LAB - MOMENTS LATER

Kate is seated at the computer screens, intently reading the information on them. The sound of the door opening draws her attention over her shoulder.

LIZ

Mother.

KATE

Hey Liz.

Liz walks up to her mother, arms crossed and expression hardened. After a moment of not being acknowledged further, she clears her throat. Kate glances up at her.

KATE

Yes?

LIZ

The dress, mother. The dress.

Kate sighs and turns her chair to gaze up at her daughter.

KATE

It's for the al Ghul fundraiser tonight. It's very important to your father that you attend.

LIZ

It's very important to me that I don't care about this.

KATE

Well, unfortunately, Elizabeth Kane has to care about these things. Anyone who is anyone will be there tonight. It's about keeping up appearances, you know that. You can't be Batgirl full time.

LIZ

Part of my Elizabeth Kane persona is not doing what I'm supposed to.

KATE

Funny. That's part of your Liz Kane persona as well.

Kate humorously smirks and turns her attention back to the computer screen.

LIZ

Ha. Ha. And let me add, ha. Besides, isn't this al Ghul guy one of the most wanted criminals on the planet? I thought you fought him like a dozen times.

KATE

More like two dozen, but he's harmless now.

LIZ

How harmless can someone be?

Kate sighs and turns away from the computer screen once more to give her full attention to Liz.

KATE

Ra's al Ghul has lived for centuries through the use of Lazarus Pits. He was the head of the League of Shadows. And yes, he was a very dangerous individual. Unfortunately for him, he can no longer use the Lazarus Pits to extend his life. He's forced to live as an ordinary man, a very old and dying man. He's being punished, trust me.

LIZ

And this League of Shadows? If he's the head of them, doesn't that make him still pretty dangerous?

KATE

The League of Shadows was disbanded following the death of his daughter Nyssa.

Liz moves to lean against the nearby table while already questioning her mother with her facial features.

LIZ

Why not just bring her back with these Lazarus Pits? If they can extend life?

KATE

He tried. Ironically, that's what led to the instability of them and the very reason that it's dangerous for him to use one now.

Liz remains silent for a long moment though her expression clearly tells the tale of her attempting to process it all.

LIZ

Wait. Just wait. Earlier you said he couldn't use them and now you're telling me it's dangerous for him to use them. Which is it? Because I don't exactly trust a super villain to avoid a dangerous thing.

Kate stands from her seat and walks over to the table.

KATE

It's dangerous for him and impossible. The Lazarus Pits became unstable when Nyssa's body was put inside. No one is really sure why, but the Pits are complicated. No one has ever truly understood them, except Nyssa. Perhaps that's why she was the one to bring them down. Aside from that, Ra's has used them too many times. Even if they were stable, it would kill him.

Liz slowly nods along to that.

LIZ

That's a bit clearer of an explanation. Well, at least that last part was.

KATE

Our world isn't always easily explainable.

LIZ

Fair enough. I can follow that. It still doesn't explain why I need to attend this shindig tonight.

Kate drapes an arm over Liz's shoulders and gives her a gentle squeeze.

KATE

Because I'm begging you. For your father. If you need to pretend like you're keeping an eye on the al Ghuls, that's fine. Just don't make it obvious.

LIZ

I'll think about it.

KATE

Please do. In the meantime, I'm going to continue looking into the incident at Eldred National Bank this morning.

Kate withdraws her arm from around Liz and moves back to her seat at the computer.

LIZ

Incident at Eldred National Bank?

KATE

Yeah. There was a robbery, but it's not so cut and dry. The criminals planted a bomb in the bank. There's still no explanation why the police weren't alerted or how the video surveillance is unreachable.

Liz curiously steps closer to the computer screens.

LIZ

This sounds big. Like something that Batgirl should be looking into.

Kate casts a look over her shoulder that stops Liz from approaching any further.

KATE

I'm looking into it. If I find anything, I'll let you know. Until then...

Liz nods her head repeatedly and holds her hands up.

LIZ

I'm going. I'm thinking. I'm pretending like it's not going to be hell on Earth.

Kate chuckles and shakes her head as Liz makes her exit.

KATE

Drama queen.

INT. MOORE MANOR BASEMENT - SAME TIME

A video feed from Eldred National Bank plays on the monitor. Tommy sits before it, staring intently as Jewel gifts a gem to the little girl and walks up to the counter. He pauses the footage, rewinds, and re-watches it, straining his eyes to try and see closer than is available to him.

MARTY

You've watched that same part a few times now. Is everything okay?

Tommy pauses the feed and spins around in his chair to see Marty fidgeting uncomfortably with an envelope in his hands.

TOMMY

She gave something to that little girl, then something to the teller right before the footage cut out.

MARTY

Uh, yeah. That's what happened.

Marty shrugs his shoulders, still not exactly following what's so important about the exchange with the little girl.

MARTY

When you asked me to dig the footage out of the city's digital archives, I thought it was just to identify the culprit. I mean, isn't it her?

He motions to the still image of Jewel on the screen. Tommy nods his head, turning back to the screen.

TOMMY

Yeah. Most likely. I'm trying to figure out how she goes from giving a gift to a little girl and cutting in line, to blowing a building up.

Marty brings a finger to his lips and taps them considerably as he falls deep in thought.

MARTY

Perhaps what she gave to the teller emits some sort of magnetic current that disrupts electronic communications.

TOMMY

Maybe. That's still a lot of people for one woman to contend with.

A chuckle from Marty draws Tommy's attention over his shoulder with an eyebrow raised curiously.

MARTY

Oh. Sorry. It's just, you do realize that there's a woman who dresses up as a bat and kicks around armed guards, right?

Tommy sighs, shaking his head.

TOMMY

It wasn't a misogynic statement, Marty. The early reports show only trauma from the explosion to all victims except the security guard.

Marty guiltily fidgets with the envelope, trying to ignore his wrongful assumption about Tommy's attitude towards women.

MARTY

Makes sense that the security guard would try to stop her.

TOMMY

Of course, except the reports are saying that his sternum was shattered. I don't see any weapons anyone could have used to deliver that kind of damage.

MARTY

And that has what to do with the little girl?

Tommy turns back to the screen and unpauses the footage, re-watching Jewel gift the little girl with the stone once more.

TOMMY

Nothing directly. But she suffered the most damage from the explosion. I think it was planted on her.

Marty falls silent, closing his eyes momentarily as he tries to push the grim detail from his mind.

MARTY

Hey. Why don't you take a break from that? New details aren't going to surface no matter how many times you re-watch it.

Tommy stops the footage and spins around to face Marty.

TOMMY

And what would you propose I do instead?

Marty smiles wide and presents the envelope. Tommy reluctantly takes it, noticing that it's been torn open.

TOMMY

Did you open my mail?

MARTY

Yes, but only because I already knew what it was. Look at it!

Tommy stares at Marty for a moment and waits for him to realize the problem, but that doesn't happen so Tommy pulls the card out of the envelope to look it over.

TOMMY

A fundraiser?

MARTY

It sounds like it's going to be a Who's Who of Eldred City.

Marty's enthusiasm is through the roof, but Tommy doesn't share it.

TOMMY

Right. Pass.

He gives the envelope back to Marty, succeeding in effectively shattering the man's excitement.

MARTY

W-what do you mean? You have to go.

TOMMY

I don't have to do anything, Marty.

MARTY

No, no. You don't understand. This is a big deal. You need to represent the company. Your parents always attended things like this.

TOMMY

Yeah, well times were different then. I have more important things to worry about right now.

Tommy turns back to computer screen and this time he slowly progresses through the footage frame by frame.

MARTY

More important than your family's company?

Sighing, Tommy stops what he's doing and glances back at Marty over his shoulder.

TOMMY

I'll send a check.

MARTY

It's not just about the donation. More people will donate if you're there.

TOMMY

I'm fairly certain that's not how it works. Besides, this is just some rich guy's attempt at being relevant again.

MARTY

"Some rich guy"? You are aware who Ra's al Ghul is, aren't you?

Tommy shrugs his shoulders in an almost careless manner.

MARTY

He fought Batman! I think Batwoman too. He's a very big deal! Right up there with guys like the Joker and Penguin and the Riddler!

TOMMY

Okay. Why isn't he behind bars?

MARTY

I'm not really sure what crimes he committed, to be honest. It's all kind of shrouded in secrecy.

Tommy stands up from his seat and rest his hands on his hips as he casts a bored look.

TOMMY

Sounds to me like a some rich guy that knows how to stay out of trouble.

Marty scoffs in disbelief. He tries to give the envelope back, but Tommy refuses it.

TOMMY

This isn't what I'm about, Marty. It's not the kind of business I do with my company.

Tommy walks towards the exit. Marty desperately looks down at the invite before something occurs to him.

MARTY

Liz is on the guest list.

Tommy stops in his tracks. He hesitates for a moment then glances back over his shoulder.

TOMMY

William Kane is going to be there?

Marty shakes his head.

MARTY

I took a peek at the guest list. It's just Liz. In fact, none of the 40 and over corporate big shots were included. I guess they're looking for a more trendy vibe.

TOMMY

Trendy? Is that what I am?

Marty scrunches his face up and shakes his head.

MARTY

But I mean, compared to William Kane. So are you gonna go?

TOMMY

I'll think about it.

Tommy exits. Marty smiles and nods.

MARTY

He's going.

INT. EMERALD TOWER HOTEL - DAY

The most wanted man and woman in Eldred today, Punch and Jewel, occupy one of the many suites available within the city's elite hotel. Despite the size of the suite, it struggles to contain their personalities. Discarded clothes, dishes, bottles of wine, and Eldred National Bank's money joined overturned furniture in a chaotic mess.

Jewel lays tangled in the sheets of the California king bed, covered in a pile of money that hadn't made its way to the floor. Punch stands at the foot of the bed drinking directly from a bottle of wine. He drops the bottle on the floor before crawling onto the bed towards her. Jewel giggles as he swoops in to plant a kiss on her lips that quickly becomes more heated by the moment.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

The sound at the door disrupts their attempts to be intimate yet again, as well as drawing a concerned glare from Punch.

PUNCH

Did you order room service again, Jeweleebooley?

Jewel shakes her head and Punch slips from the bed. He retrieves a gun from the nightstand and makes his way to the door to peer through the peephole before pulling the door open as far as the safety lock will allow.

PUNCH

What?

The man on the other side of the door wears a bright smile on his face, dressed immaculately in a three piece suit.

SUIT

Afternoon, sir. I've been sent on behalf of Black Mask with an offer for you.

PUNCH

Never heard of him. Get lost.

Punch starts to push the door shut, but the suit grabs it at the last minute to keep it from latching.

SUIT

With all due respect, Black Mask is a very powerful man. He's very interested in your services.

With a sigh, Punch releases the door and leans against the wall to peer through the slight opening.

PUNCH

Tell me. How did your boss find me?

The suit laughs in a way that leaves Punch questioning how insulted he should be. Given the tightened grip on the gun, it's clear he's settled on a lot.

SUIT

As I told you, he's a very powerful man. He has eyes everywhere.

PUNCH

Is that right? Can he see this?

Punch removes the gun from behind his back and aims it directly in the face of the suit, causing his eyes to widen in panic.

SUIT

Sir, please! I simply come with a message, nothing more!

Punch nods his head, but keeps the gun in place.

PUNCH

That message is?

SUIT

Black Mask has invited you to join his operation. He believes that your skills would be very useful.

PUNCH

Translation: he wants me to become one of his employees. Pass. I'm just fine being my own boss. Now, deliver that message to your boss and tell him to stay out of my business. I'll be out of his town soon enough.

Punch immediately slams the door shut in the suit's face. He lays the gun on the nearby table and turns back to Jewel.

JEWEL

It sounds like he don't want us in his town.

PUNCH

It's a good thing we don't need his permission. We go where we want. And tonight... we're going to a party.

He looks down on the table, eyeing a bloodied al Ghul fundraiser invitation laying underneath the gun.

JEWEL

A party?! Yeeeeee!

Jewel squeals with excitement and falls back onto the bed.

PUNCH

Find something nice to wear, babydoll. This town has one more hit.

He picks up the invitation and walks back to the bed, passing the discarded bodies of the man and woman whose invitation and room they've now claimed as their own.

ACT TWO

INT. LIZ'S BEDROOM - SAME DAY

Liz stands before her full length mirror wearing the long black gown that her mother had set out for her. The thin silver straps shimmer in the sunlight cast through her bedroom window as she turns back and forth to admire the fit.

KATE

It looks nice.

Kate stands in the doorway, leaning against the frame as she smiles at the sight of her daughter looking like a normal girl worried about normal things for a change.

LIZ

You got lucky.

Liz glances at her mom in the mirror and cracks a smile.

KATE

Does that mean you'll be attending the fundraiser tonight?

LIZ

Just to be clear, I'm not thrilled about it. It's not exactly what I want to do, but if it means this much to you and dad... then I guess I can sacrifice one evening.

Kate's smile spreads, but it's only momentary; fading as she steps into the room and produces a piece of paper from behind her back.

KATE

I do have some news on the bank robbery.

Liz perks up with interest and reaches for the paper. After hesitating slightly, Kate passes it off.

KATE

It's not a lot.

Liz takes a seat on her bed and her eyes start scanning the information as Kate joins her.

KATE

I don't know how they pulled everything off, but I have an idea who they are. Nicolas and Stefanie King. They were married a year ago in Las Vegas. There's a string of robberies between there and here since then. All pretty similar.

LIZ

I don't understand. Why is no one looking for them?

KATE

There's no evidence. I wouldn't even know of them if I hadn't pieced the footage together out of the city's archives.

Liz shakes her head and stares at the paper longer, willing it to have more information that she can use.

LIZ

So, what? They just walk away?

KATE

Of course not. I know that I tell you all the time to be careful about how far above the law you go. But these types of criminals are exactly why you exist.

Liz takes in a deep breath, letting it out slowly as those words sink in and her eyes remain glued to the pictures of her suspects.

KATE

Also, don't forget that whatever methods they are using makes them very dangerous. At the least, they're capable of distorting surveillance equipment as well as utilizing an undetectable form of explosives.

LIZ

E.C.P.D. still hasn't found any traces of the bomb that went off?

Kate grimly shakes her head.

KATE

From the footage I was able to find, it looks as if some type of gemstones are what Stefanie uses to accomplish both. But there's still the matter of how Nicolas factors in. He disappeared with her we have to assume they're working together, but I supposed it's entirely possible that she's working alone.

LIZ

You don't think she is?

Once more, Kate shakes her head after a moment of consideration.

KATE

The blunt force trauma that the security officer suffered isn't consistent with an explosive device. I think Nicolas is using something as well. He's likely the muscle of the duo.

LIZ

The coward as well. She gets caught on camera while he hides. Class act. Then again...

Liz flips the paper around to remind her mother of the pictures of Nicolas and Stefanie.

LIZ

This guy screams sleazy criminal.

Kate laughs and agrees with a nod before her cell phone sounds. She pulls it from her pocket and glances at the screen, suspiciously eyeing notification.

LIZ

Is everything okay?

KATE

Uh... sure.

She swipes at the phone's screen and quickly types out a message before sending it.

LIZ

You sound convincing. Which, that's my sarcastic voice in case you're paying attention.

Kate shakes her head clear, pulling her attention from her phone to look over at her daughter.

KATE

I'm sorry. That was your father. He wants to have dinner tonight. With me.

Liz's head snaps back slightly in surprise.

LIZ

That's different. I can't remember the last time you two had dinner together.

KATE

That would require him to even let me know if he's coming home. But it's not what we need to be focused on right now.

LIZ

What more do you think you're going to find on these two?

KATE

Hopefully nothing. However, the al Ghul fundraiser tonight is rumored to bring in a lot of money. That's why I want to be in your ear tonight.

LIZ

You're sending me into this fundraiser undercover? You just made tonight actually interesting, but I'm going to have to pass.

KATE

Are you kidding me right now?

LIZ

Mom, it's okay. If dad wants to have dinner with you then good or bad it's something. You should do it. I'll be alright on my own for a night.

KATE

Liz, I don't know...

Kate trails off, concern on her face and in her voice despite the confident vibes Liz gives off as she stands up to view herself in the mirror once more.

LIZ

Come on. How can I not kill in this dress? You have surprisingly good taste.

KATE

I just don't want to send you in alone when there could- hold up. Did you say just "surprisingly"?

Kate stands, slightly offended. Liz grins back at her.

KATE

You're lucky that there are more important things going on right now. That said, I'm still not sold on sending you in alone.

LIZ

And I know. You're my mother. You're going to nag and nag and-

KATE

Excuse you? You're really giving it today, aren't you?

Liz holds a hand up to halt Kate with a pleasant smile on her face.

LIZ

Let me finish, please. You're going to nag until I eventually wear you down and get what I want anyways so why don't we cut to the chase? You have dinner with dad. I'll go to this fundraiser, and if I need you I'll call?

Kate stares her daughter down with every fiber of her being determined to argue about Liz's safety.

KATE

Why do you have to be so stubborn?

LIZ

Hey. Am I picking up where Batwoman left off or what?

Kate opens her mouth to respond to one last shot at her, but promptly closes it. Shaking her head, she turns and walks out of the room. Liz smiles proudly at her victory.

INT. MOORE MANOR BASEMENT - SAME DAY

Marty sits in front of the computer screens and, much like Tommy earlier, he's making his way through the short surveillance clip. His review is interrupted by the door sliding opened. He glances over his shoulder and blinks in surprise at Tommy decked out in a black suit.

MARTY

Ohhhhh. So you decided to go now that you know-

Tommy is quick to cut Marty off, thrusting a finger into the air as he does so.

TOMMY

I got to thinking! This bank robbery is probably just the beginning. Or maybe it's just one in a series of crimes. The point is, that fundraiser tonight is likely not very safe.

Marty nods his head thoughtfully.

MARTY

Mmmmhmmm. You are always going out of your way to protect people.

TOMMY

Exactly.

MARTY

Wait. I was making a joke. Did that not sound like a joke?

Tommy frowns and attempts to gauge if that was a joke.

TOMMY

It sounded like you usually sound, to be honest.

Marty scratches his head and thinks that over for a moment.

MARTY

Anyway! You rarely go out of your way to stop criminals just for the sake of it. You do realize that, right?

TOMMY

Look, Marty. All criminal activity in this city leads back to one place. I've realized that now. This is just another step closer to uncovering who Black Mask is. Getting to him, making him pay for taking my parents from me, that's all that matters.

MARTY

And that is why you've had a change of heart about this fundraiser?

Tommy nods his head repeatedly, eventually shrugging his shoulders at Marty's silence following the question.

TOMMY

Also to give my donation in person.  A lot of people don't realize that representing a company is sometimes just as important as the donation. A lot more people will be willing to donate if they see me there.

Marty smiles and fails miserably to hold back a chuckle.

TOMMY

What? My parents always attended things like this. It's important.

With his laughter building off of that, Marty shakes his head and holds a hand up as he silently pleads with Tommy to stop.

TOMMY

Marty, what the hell?

MARTY

Oh man! Nothing! You're doing great.

Marty offers Tommy two thumbs up while failing to get his cackling under control. Tommy inhales a sharp breath, holding it for a moment as he attempts to shut out Marty.

TOMMY

You're acting really immature right now. I hope you know that.

Marty tries to be offended by that, but he's too tickled to achieve it. Tommy shakes his head and points at Marty.

TOMMY

Look! I'm doing it... because that's what dad would do. Hell, that's what he'd want me to do.

Tommy turns his back on Marty with a sigh. Marty's amusement with the situation drains at the mention of Tommy's father. He gets up from his seat and lays a hand on Tommy's shoulder.

MARTY

Yeah. No, you're right. Just don't go doing something that'll get you killed out there.

Glancing back over his shoulder, Tommy flashes a reassuring smile.

MARTY

Because we need you. This company needs you. Whether I like to admit it or not, the city needs you.

Tommy's eyes narrow on Marty in surprise at his words.

TOMMY

Jesus, Marty. Where'd that come from?

Uncomfortably shrugging Marty's hand off his shoulder, Tommy tries to suppress any sort of emotion brought on by Marty's words by walking away.

MARTY

I know I don't really say it, mostly because you scare the bejesus out of me when you put the hood on, but you're doing this city good.

Tommy glances back at Marty. His attempt to deflect any emotion cracks slightly when he makes eye contact.

TOMMY

Look. I know you don't agree with my methods. But you have to understand where I'm coming from. What happened to my parents... that happened because men like Black Mask operate above the law. Batgirl is doing what she thinks is right, but she operates within the confines of the justice system. So I have to be the one to cross that line. I don't have to like it. But I also have made my peace with it.

Marty remains quiet and reluctantly nods his head to show his understanding. Tommy sighs and turns back towards the door.

TOMMY

Take the night off, Marty.

Tommy makes his exit as Marty slumps back down into his seat.

INT. BLACK MASK'S OFFICE - SAME DAY

Black Mask sits behind his desk with a map of the city laid out before him. Wells stands across from him, finger pointed to a location on the map as they discuss business.

WELLS

Traffic at the docks have slowed. Word got out quick about the explosives failure and a lot of our contacts are hesitant about taking a risk on us now.

BLACK MASK

Remind them of the risk they take by refusing us.

WELLS

Already on it, sir.

A knock at the door interrupts their conversation.

BLACK MASK

Come in.

The suit from Emerald Tower makes his way into the room, still visibly shaken from having a gun in his face; or quite possibly due to being in the presence of his boss.

SUIT

Sir. I delivered your message to the new arrivals in town and uhh... unfortunately, they have chosen to decline the offer.

Black Mask remains silent following the response. The mask concealing his entire face leaves an unsettling atmosphere.

SUIT

He, uh, he said he likes being his own boss but that he would be out of your town very soon.

Nodding his head, Black Mask is eerily silent even as he rises from his seat. The suit immediately begins further explaining while Black Mask approaches him.

SUIT

He had a gun. I wasn't able to obtain anything else from him. He wouldn't even let me into the room.

Black Mask raises his black-gloved hand that lands on the suit's shoulder in what would typically be a calming gesture though is the exact opposite given the man's presence.

BLACK MASK

You were scared of him? Because he had a gun?

The suit breathes heavy, nodding.

SUIT

Sir, I'm very sorry that-

BLACK MASK

Shhhhhhhhh.

Black Mask hushes his subordinate while his hand moves to the back of his neck. After a beat, he grabs the man firmly, causing him to tense up with a grunt.

BLACK MASK

I don't have a gun. Are you scared of me?

The suit helplessly gurgles his response.

BLACK MASK

Now, I'm going to give you a second opportunity to handle this. I'm being generous. You should be grateful.

Black Mask releases the suit, allowing him to take a deep breath while cowering.

BLACK MASK

You will deal with them immediately. They will be a message to every would-be criminal. This is my territory and I don't like tourists.

The suit quickly nods while still trying to catch his breath.

SUIT

Uh, they're... they're attending the fundraiser tonight. That... that complicates things a little.

BLACK MASK

It doesn't. They'll be at the event. So will you.

Again, the suit nods his understanding.

SUIT

Yes, sir. I'll get the boys.

The suit makes for the door, but Black Mask's hand lands on the thug's shoulder to absolutely terrify him.

BLACK MASK

I assure you that if you fail this time, you will wish I had a gun.

The suit swallows hard and gives another nod. Black Mask releases him and the man is quick to shuffle out of the office, pulling the door shut behind him.

WELLS

The event is going to fall to pieces now. Are these two nobodies really worth all of that?

Black Mask sighs and returns to his seat behind his desk.

BLACK MASK

People need to be made aware that there are no lengths I won't go to protect my city.

END OF ACT TWO

ACT THREE

INT. THE ROSE HALL - NIGHT

Liz enters the town's largest and most exclusive banquet hall. She scans the crowd already forming in their fine suits and designer dresses as they sipped on champagne and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres from the waiters carrying trays around the room.

TALIA AL GHUL moves through the crowd as if she could own them all while singling Liz out. Her dark hair is piled perfectly atop her head and her barely-there gown carries class and elegance even with all the flesh on display.

TALIA

Elizabeth Kane! Talia al Ghul, of course. I'm very grateful that you were able to attend this evening. That's a... nice dress.

The hesitation in her compliment doesn't go unnoticed from Liz, who grins and bears through the veiled insult.

LIZ

Thank you. Yours is lovely too.

Talia performs a twirl to show it off with pride.

TALIA

Of course it is. You know, my father has spoke highly of your father's little company. I hear he does great things for this cozy little community.

Liz nods along while biting her tongue.

LIZ

Something like that.

TALIA

It really is a spiritual experience to help those who really need it. That's what tonight is all about. My father's gift to this town.

Talia figuratively pats herself on the back while her expression carries the weight of her insult and the amusement that it brings to her. Liz takes in a deep breath before opening her mouth to respond.

GARFIELD

Isn't the town providing the gift?

The two women turn their attention to the intruding voice. GARFIELD LOGAN greets them both with a smile so innocent it's impossible to be fake. The young man's messy blonde hair nearly falls into his eyes save for the black rimmed glasses keeping it at bay. Despite the suspected lack of attention to his hairstyle, he still looks dapper in his fitted suit.

TALIA

Excuse you?

GARFIELD

My apologies. I haven't introduced myself. Garfield Logan. It's an honor to have been included on the guest list this evening.

He extends a hand first to Liz, who accepts it with a smile. Upon offering his hand to Talia, the woman eyes it as an extension of the affront she views his interruption. He shrugs and returns the hand to his pocket, unoffended.

GARFIELD

I'm impressed with the presentation of tonight's event, sure. However, unless I'm mistaken, is it true that your family is not actually donating this evening?

There's no mistaking the shock from Talia at Garfield's inquiry, proving him right without her actually saying a word. Once this realization hits her, she haughtily turns her nose up at him.

TALIA

If you must know, my family has contributed a large sum to the gathering itself. Something like this does not come together all on its own.

GARFIELD

So then it's safe to say that the town is providing for itself since all of the contributions come from Eldred's own citizens.

Talia scoffs and turns her back on Garfield.

TALIA

Thank you for coming, Elizabeth.

She turns back to Garfield only to intentionally turn her nose up at him once more as she walks off. Garfield watches her leave, blind to her treatment of him.

LIZ

You're going to have to teach me how you do that.

Garfield turns back to Liz, raising an eyebrow curiously at her comment.

GARFIELD

Beg your pardon.

LIZ

How you diffuse women like her.

GARFIELD

Oh. That keeps happening with all women for some reason.

Garfield glances after the departing Talia and then back to Liz cluelessly.

LIZ

I'm sorry. I'm Liz Kane.

She offers her hand to Garfield again, but he waves her off with a shake of the head.

GARFIELD

I know who you are, Ms. Kane. I believe everyone in Eldred knows who you are.

LIZ

Yeah. Unfortunately.

GARFIELD

Why do you say that?

LIZ

Uh, I don't have the greatest reputation.

GARFIELD

Reputation is what men and women think of us. Character is what God and angels know of us.

Liz thinks about that for a moment, eventually smiling at the words.

LIZ

I like that. I'm sorry, I don't think I've heard of you before tonight. What company are you with?

Garfield shakes his head.

GARFIELD

I work independently. Your father has offered me work, but I am not interested in the confines of a corporate infrastructure.

LIZ

Oh. I see. Well, that's... great...

Liz loses her train of thought, trailing off as she spots Tim Drake across the room.

LIZ

I'm sorry. Can you excuse me for a moment?

GARFIELD

Of course. Enjoy your evening, Ms. Kane.

Liz makes her way through the crowd, each step that carries her towards Drake only adding to her annoyance building. She grabs Drake by the shoulder, forcing him to turn toward her. His face lights up as he lays eyes on her.

DRAKE

Liz, it's good to see you ag-

LIZ

Are you still keeping tabs on me?

Drake throws his hands up in immediate surrender of her accusatory tone and expression staring him down.

DRAKE

Whoa. Definitely not. I'm not here because of you, I promise.

LIZ

You'll have to excuse me if I find that a little hard to believe considering how easily you lied to me last time, Jason Todd.

Drake chuckles at the reminder of his alias, but the look Liz gives certainly kills any possible amusement. Once again, his hands go up to remind her of his surrender.

DRAKE

I promise, I'm not here for you. I'm here because of Talia. The daughter of Ra's al Ghul. You know, one of the most dangerous men in the world?

LIZ

Lived for centuries. Headed the League of Shadows. Corrupted the Lazarus Pits and has to live forever as a feeble old man. Blah-blah. Boring, boring, boring.

DRAKE

Okay! So you know all about him. Fair enough. What you don't know is that his daughter Nyssa-

LIZ

Died and he tried to bring her back. That's what corrupted the pits.

DRAKE

Right. But did you also know that Ra's wanted Nyssa and Bruce to carry on the League of Shadows after his death?

Liz opens her mouth, but promptly closes it again.

DRAKE

Ra's knew that eventually he wouldn't be able to use the Lazarus Pits anymore. He wanted someone to take over for him.

LIZ

Okay. Well, Nyssa's dead. Even the Lazarus Pits couldn't bring her back.

DRAKE

Talia's alive. And I'm here on Bruce's invitation.

LIZ

Talia invited Bruce?

DRAKE

Yeah. I don't trust Ra's and I don't trust anyone in his family.

Liz takes a look around the room, spotting Talia using her tired fake nice routine on another poor innocent victim.

LIZ

Okay. Well, can I just say she doesn't really seem like she has it together to be a super villain? If you want my professional opinion.

DRAKE

Fair enough. Do you want the general consensus on Elizabeth Kane? Or maybe Bruce Wayne?

Liz sighs and rolls her eyes before nodding along.

LIZ

Yeah, yeah. People really love to throw that in my face.

DRAKE

Secret identities are important. Not just for us, but for them too.

LIZ

I get it. She's reason for concern because of her last name. All you did was make tonight interesting.

Drake looks at Liz in surprise, a smile forming on his face as those words sink in.

DRAKE

I did? Thanks.

Liz turns to him with a confused look on her face.

LIZ

A lot of that was sarcasm. I mean, while I do prefer crime-fighting to this...

She motions emphatically to the surrounding crowd.

LIZ

I can't say that I enjoy it either.

DRAKE

Well, if you want my opinion, I think you look great tonight.

Liz pauses at the unexpected compliment. She glances at Drake, almost as if second guessing what she heard. She returns his smile before awkwardly looking anywhere else.

LIZ

Thank you.

From across the room, Tommy watches this all unfold as nonchalantly as possible.

J.J.

What's the matter? Don't trust him?

Tommy rolls his eyes with a very audible groan at the presence of E.C.P.D.'s so-called finest.

J.J.

Good to see you too, buddy.

J.J.'s sarcasm is duly noted by a grimace from Tommy.

J.J.

The good news is, you don't have to worry about him.

TOMMY

Worry about who?

J.J.

Funny. That's funny. However, that man who is rapidly making Liz forget about the poor sad sack that thinks he actually means something in this town-

TOMMY

Sad sack?

J.J. gives Tommy's interruption a glance and a nod before continuing on.

J.J.

That is Timothy Drake from Gotham. A very respectable man.

TOMMY

Fascinating.

Tommy makes it clear he finds it the exact opposite and even turns his attention to elsewhere in the crowd.

J.J.

Bruce Wayne has even entrusted him as the controlling shareholder of Wayne Enterprises. That makes him one of the most powerful men in the world.

TOMMY

Anyone ever tell you that your background checking is creepy as hell?

J.J.

I'm a detective. It's what I do.

TOMMY

That and get invited to parties above your class. How is it exactly that you made the guest list?

J.J.

I insisted on coming. You see, I care about the safety of everyone in this city. Even guys like you.

TOMMY

Oh, so you bullied your way onto the guest list? That's classy.

J.J. chuckles along with Tommy's insult at his expense while patting him on the shoulder.

J.J.

You see, Thomas, you can make all the jokes you want about me because at the end of the day-

TOMMY

Excuse me.

Tommy interrupts J.J. by casually walking off in the middle of his sentence, causing the detective's hand to fall from his shoulder. J.J. stammers awkwardly for a moment, eventually clearing his throat and re-adjusting his tie in an attempt of shrug off the incident.

INT. KANE MANOR - SAME NIGHT

An awkward silence fills the dining room as William and Kate sit at opposite ends of the long table. William has his cell phone in his hand, tapping away at the screen relentlessly with his thumb while Kate sits with her arms crossed almost petulantly before her untouched meal.

WILLIAM

There. I'm sorry about that.

William finally sets his cell phone down and smiles across the table at his wife.

WILLIAM

You haven't touched your food.

Kate glances down at it.

KATE

It looks good.

WILLIAM

Well, I didn't ask you to have dinner with me so you could just look at it.

William chuckles, but Kate remains stone-faced. With a sigh, William gets up from his seat and walks to the other end of the table. He uses his fork to take a bit of her meal and then holds his arms out to present himself as unaffected by the meal.

WILLIAM

Honestly. You think I'm trying to poison you?

He shakes his head with a laugh and returns to his seat.

KATE

The thought hadn't occurred to me.

WILLIAM

Of course it didn't.

The smile on his face says otherwise and eventually Kate mirrors it.

KATE

Why did you ask me to dinner, William? And, for the love of God, do not say because it's been awhile.

WILLIAM

No. That's not the reason I wanted to see you tonight. The truth is...

KATE

Do you even know what that is anymore?

WILLIAM

Touché. Despite the way you feel about me, you are my wife. We have a daughter together. And I've honestly been concerned over my recent near death experiences.

There's something in William's voice as he makes the confession that softens Kate's expression. Her rigid posture falters slightly and she looks to him curiously.

KATE

I know they have affected Liz. I didn't realize you even noticed.

WILLIAM

It's a little difficult not to when you're in the hospital nearly dying. Or when a man is holding a gun to your head and threatening your staff.

KATE

Yeah, well, Eldred has become a dangerous place lately.

WILLIAM

I've noticed that as well. It's honestly contributed to my concerns. It's obvious that I've been targeted more than once and likely will be again.

KATE

So, what? You want to increase security? I know you're not leaving Eldred.

William chuckles and shakes his head.

WILLIAM

Absolutely not. I won't allow anyone to run me from my company or my family.

KATE

I didn't realize you still had one. A family, that is.

WILLIAM

I'm hoping I still do.

Kate falls silent. Once she realizes he is waiting for a response, she can only shrug her shoulders.

WILLIAM

I have a proposition for you, Katherine. If anything were to happen to me, and it's entirely possible given recent events, I want you to take over the company.

Kate reels from the announcement, blinking in surprise and then from the shock of processing the news.

WILLIAM

I understand if you aren't interested. I did just explain how dangerous the position is. However, there's no one I trust more with the company and to make sure Elizabeth is taken care of.

KATE

I don't know what to say.

WILLIAM

You don't have to say anything. Think about it. Hopefully nothing happens to me before you make a decision.

William smiles at the joke, even though it's really not a joke, and begins eating his meal as silence fall over the dining room once more.

INT. ROSE HALL - CONTINUOUS

Tommy has resided to a corner of the room, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed while staring directly at Liz and Drake on the dance floor. They move along to the music, keeping a respectable distance from one another despite the embrace. The set of eyes burning a hole into them go entirely unnoticed.

DRAKE

So, I do want to apologize for basically spying on you the last time I was in town.

LIZ

It's not necessary. I know you were just following orders. And, whether or not I actually needed it, you did help me out.

Drake makes a show of arching his eyebrow at that.

DRAKE

Are you... thanking me?

Liz immediately shakes her head with a laugh.

LIZ

No. I was not thanking you.

DRAKE

Really? Because it sounded like you said that I was a help. I helped you out. I believe I saved your life, actually.

LIZ

While it may appear that way on the surface, you really just saved that goon from a more severe beating.

Drake scoffs in surprise and disbelief, choking back a laugh.

DRAKE

Oh! Is that what I did?

LIZ

That's exactly what you did. I mean, if anyone is going to thank you I would think it should be him.

DRAKE

Well, I'll make sure to collect on that as soon as I'm able to swing by Eldred Prison.

LIZ

You do that. In the meantime, I believe you said you owe me an apology. I'll be taking that whenever you're ready.

DRAKE

I didn't already do that?

LIZ

Absolutely not. You said you wanted to, but you never actually said the words.

DRAKE

Oh. Well. In that case. Ms. Kane, I sincerely apologize for overstepping my bounds and preventing you from thoroughly thrashing a criminal that more than deserved your wrath.

LIZ

Thank you. You know, a lot of people underestimate the value of a good thrashing.

Drake nods his agreement. Before he has a chance to respond with a witty comment of his own the clinking of a glass echoes throughout the hall, drawing everyone's attention to the balcony overlooking the event. Talia stands commanding the attention of the room with her wine glass held firmly in one hand.

TALIA

Ladies and gentlemen, it is an honor to host tonight's event with all of you in attendance. Your donations tonight will be put to great use for improving the quality of life for so many unfortunate citizens of Eldred that have fallen on hard times. You all deserve a round of applause for your generosity this evening.

The men and women in attendance gladly praise themselves by cheering for their own donations.

TALIA

Before I let you all resume your good time, I wanted to take a moment to introduce and honor the man who is responsible for this all happening. A man who has had a hard life himself and knows what it's like to struggle. He has had many ups and downs in life and they are the very reason he has decided to return to this city, making it his life's mission to help those who need it most. Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for my father, Ra's al Ghul.

Talia begins the applause for her father, an act that is accompanied by stunned silence from those in attendance aware of the man and his many exploits against Batman in Gotham. Those in attendance hesitantly join Talia in greeting the man with applause.

RA'S AL GHUL makes his way out onto the balcony with the use of a cane. His dark graying hair is swept back out of his face and his suit finely pressed to give him a distinguished presence. He smiles to those in attendance and raises a hand in acknowledgment.

LIZ

Uh... Is that what you call feeble?

DRAKE

I... I mean... kinda?

Liz shoots Drake a questioning glare and he reluctantly nods along with her unspoken concern.

DRAKE

That's not how I last knew him. I'm guessing it's not how your mother last knew him either. I'm going to make a call.

LIZ

Yeah. Same.

The duo split from one another with Drake turning to head through the crowd. Liz starts to follow only for Tommy to step into her path with a huge smile on his face.

TOMMY

Hey! Liz. How's it going?

LIZ

Tommy. Hi! Uh, I'm good. I was just going to-

TOMMY

I was hoping you'd saved a dance for me?

Tommy extends a hand out to Liz with the other held gallantly behind his back. The roguish smirk on his face makes Liz forget completely about everything else; including the presence of Ra's al Ghul. She hesitates only a moment before placing her hand in his with a smile.

MUSIC CUE: "Beautiful Creature" by MIIA

Leading them into the center of the dance floor, Tommy wraps an arm around Liz's waist to pull her into him. He embraces her delicately but protectively at the same time; the combination causes Liz to practically melt into him as she drapes her hand onto his shoulder.

The two move in silence to the rhythm of the music, completely oblivious to their surroundings. More than the room, the world itself fades to darkness leaving nothing but one another and their eyes locked on one another.

From her perch, Talia watches on the pair before casting a glance towards her father whose own eyes are drawn to the pair. He glances towards his daughter, communicating his thoughts to her with nothing but a look. Talia returns her eyes to Tommy and Liz as she silently watches the pair.

J.J. also has his attention fixated on his two former classmates. His disdain for Tommy's general presence is intensified by his proximity to one of the many citizens of Eldred he feels is fooled by the man's reputation.

Tommy reluctantly breaks his eye contact with Liz, embarrassed by the remorse building the longer he's with her.

TOMMY

I'm really sorry for the way I've been treating you. You know I'm only trying to look out for you, right?

Liz puts on her best smile and nods, feeling a desperate need to clear his guilty conscience more than confess how his treatment has really affected her.

LIZ

I know.

He smiles as he makes eye contact with her once again.

TOMMY

Sometimes I wish I wasn't Thomas Moore. Or you weren't Elizabeth Kane.

Before Liz has a chance to let that sink in, Tommy abruptly dips her in their dance. His hand holds onto the small of her back, the other cradling her neck as he leans in close enough that she can feel his breath wash over her. She stares into his eyes, surprised and overwhelmed all at the same time.

TOMMY

Sometimes, you know?

He cracks a grin, watching her reaction carefully. She can't help but smile at his statement before eventually nodding in agreement before he finally returns her upright.

LIZ

Yeah. I have some idea.

Drake makes his return, spotting Liz with Tommy on the dance floor. His eyes take in the scene before him like a true detective evaluating every piece of the puzzle. It's only then that he remembers Ra's al Ghul. His eyes dart to the balcony, spotting Talia standing alone overlooking the assembly.

DRAKE

Dammit!

Drake pushes his way through the crowd, heading towards the closest stairwell on either side of the balcony.

On the dancefloor: Tommy watches Liz in silence, his eyes almost studying her face. Her cheeks flush and she shyly drops her head.

LIZ

Tommy...

TOMMY

I'm sorry. Did I do something wrong?

Liz laughs and shakes her head.

LIZ

You're just looking at me like you're seeing me for the first time or something.

Tommy can't help but laugh before eventually shaking his head out of protest.

TOMMY

No. That's not what I'm doing.

She hesitantly raises her eyes to look up at him.

LIZ

No?

TOMMY

I see you. I've always seen you.

Liz takes in a deep breath as his words overwhelm her, leaving her speechless for a moment. Tommy gives her that moment before he takes matters into his own hands and begins to move in. There's slight apprehension in his decision, but that quickly goes away when Liz makes up the hesitation by slipping her hand to the back of his neck and bringing their lips the rest of the way together.

Balcony: Drake bounds up the stairs two at a time to confront Talia, much to her surprise.

DRAKE

Where is Ra's, Talia?

Talia scoffs at his valor and dismisses him with a laugh.

TALIA

Nice Bruce impersonation, but you lack his intimidating presence. Or any presence at all, to be honest with you.

DRAKE

Stop wasting my time. I'm not impersonating anyone.

TALIA

Aren't you, though? I'm fairly certain Bruce's name was on that invitation you used to get in tonight.

Drake grabs Talia roughly by the arm.

DRAKE

Start talking.

Talia glares at his hand on her before turning her annoyance onto him.

TALIA

You have more immediate concerns to be worried about, Wonder Boy.

Drake cocks his head curiously just as

THE HALL DOORS BURST OPEN

Punch and Jewel breeze into the party, immediately garnering the attention of the entire ballroom. Punch scans the room with a nod while Jewel gleefully twirls around behind him.

PUNCH

Where do I punch my ticket, kids?

He raises the bloodied invitation with a grin.

END OF ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

INT. ROSE HALL - CONTINUOUS

Punch whistles as he paces around the abandoned dance floor. Jewel follows a less deliberate path, getting much too close to many of the guests to admire their jewelry.

PUNCH

Well, look-ee here! Everybody decked out in their fancy pants on my account?

JEWEL

Punchy-baby! I'm bored now.

Punch chuckles and glances over his shoulder at Jewel.

PUNCH

She never was much for the talk, if you get what I mean, fella.

He clicks his tongue while nudging a nearby man in the crowd, only succeeding in terrifying him.

PUNCH

Right then! If someone could just point us to the big pot of money we can be on our way.

J.J. emerges from the crowd with his hand on his hip, holding his jacket back to expose his firearm.

J.J.

Hold it right there!

Punch raises his gloved fist and J.J. immediately draws his gun in the blink of an eye. A chain whip ensnares J.J.'s arm a beat later and Jewel tugs on it to give Punch his opening. He strikes J.J. in the chest with enough force to knock him back into the wall with a thud. J.J. slinks down to the floor, clutching at his chest.

PUNCH

Now! Ladies and gentlemen. I don't want to have to repeat myself and I don't want to continue swinging my metaphorical you-know-what around. Let's all just agree that mine's the biggest and nobody else has to get hurt. Sound good?

As the donation cache is delivered to Punch, Liz anxiously watches on while trying to formulate a plan. She turns to Tommy, stunned to find Drake standing there instead.

DRAKE

We need to get these people out of here before somebody gets hurt.

Liz looks around the immediate area for Tommy while Drake looks to her for her response.

DRAKE

Liz? Are you listening to me?

LIZ

What? I'm sorry.

DRAKE

I doubt these two going to be on their merry way once they get what they want.

LIZ

No. That's not their style.

DRAKE

You have any ideas?

Liz considers it for a moment, giving a bleak sigh before opening her mouth just as

A GUNSHOT

Sounds throughout the ballroom. Some of the guest scream and everyone but Punch and Jewel drop to the floor. All eyes, including Punch and Jewel's, turn to the six men in black masks wielding semi-automatic rifles.

LEAD THUG

Black Mask didn't like your counter offer.

INT. MARTY'S APARTMENT - SAME NIGHT

Marty reclines at a dangerous level in his high-back desk chair while holding his cell phone incredibly close to his face. The collection of take-out containers and laundry throughout the limited living space paints as clear a picture of his bachelor status as does the fact he doesn't even own a couch.

MARTY

Hmmm... cats? Cats?

He mutters to himself aloud. The picture of the cheery brunette on his phone seems to encourage a right swipe, but her love of cats seems to be a hang-up for Marty.

MARTY

They do make some adorable memes, but would I want to live with one?

He looks around his apartment to consider a cat traipsing around. Eventually he nods his head.

MARTY

I'll give it a shot.

He presses his finger to the screen and swipes right. The screen lights up to signify a match, delightfully surprising him.

ALERT FROM TOMMY

Trouble.

Marty jolts in surprise, causing the chair to flip backwards with a yell. He pops up to his feet a second later and opens up his messages.

TEXT MESSAGE

Shut down the power to Rose Hall.

MARTY

Please?

Marty chastises the phone and drops it on the desk. He picks his chair up off the floor and scoots into position at his computer. Without missing a beat, he begins frantically tapping away at the keyboard.

INT. ROSE HALL - SAME TIME

Punch and Jewel stand before the line of thugs with their hands lazily in the air.

PUNCH

Okay. How 'bout this? Tell him that I'll reconsider his offer once I finish up here. Run along now.

LEAD THUG

Naaah. He's respectfully withdrawing from negotiations. Don't you worry, though. We've got you a ride out of town. Plenty of room for you and your girl in the body bag we have picked out.

Behind the privacy of a catering table, Liz and Drake are fully aware of how quickly the situation is spiraling out of control.

DRAKE

We have to do something before this situation turns violent.

LIZ

Other than get shot and die, I'm tapped out at the moment. What have you got?

Drake thinks for a moment and retrieves a smoke pellet from inside his jacket.

DRAKE

If we can come up with a distraction that won't lead to someone getting shot, I can create enough cover for myself. I'd have to move quick but I could probably take them all out.

LIZ

Unless you have your suit and mask hidden in one of those pocket, we can't see in smoke.

DRAKE

I can.

Liz's eyes narrow on him questioningly and he taps just under his eye.

DRAKE

My contacts are the latest in visionary enhancements via Wayne Tech. I'll get you a pair once we get out of this.

He shoots Liz a smirk, but it's short-lived courtesy of the pressing matter.

LIZ

Alright. So a distraction. Any ideas on that?

Drake shrugs and opens his mouth only for the lights to cut out, sending the hall into darkness.

DRAKE

That'll work.

Drake launches the smoke pellet over the table just as the backup generator kicks in and a dim lighting illuminates a path to the nearest exists.

DRAKE

Get everyone out of here!

Liz takes off in a crouch to evacuate the civilians while Drake launches himself over the table into the smoke cloud growing in the center of the room.

He produces his bo-staff and expands it to full length as he goes to work.

Liz helps support J.J. while quickly ushering the crowd through the nearest exit before glancing up to the balcony to spot Talia. Talia catches Liz's gaze and shrugs as she casually makes her exit.

Drake moves through the haze, swinging his bo-staff at his blinded enemies. A solid shot to one's chest leaves him defenseless against the strike to the head that incapacitates him.

Moving onto the next one, Drake drives a blunt strike into his back before catching him around the throat and slamming him down onto the floor.

The third and fourth thug stand back to back, hoping to defend one another despite having no way of seeing where their attacker is coming from. A TAP-TAP to the floor with his bo-staff causes them to turn to him with their guns raised but it's already too late.

THWACK-THWACK

A one-two shot with the metal staff collides with their skulls, lying them out in an instant.

THUG

Who's there?! Somebody say something!

The fifth thug shouts into the smoke with his gun aimed towards the noise, unsure if he's about to unload into one of his own men. With the smoke beginning to thin, Drake rushes forward and drops low to slide under the aimed weapon and crack both of his shins with the metal staff. The thug slams face-first into the floor and looks up just in time to take a hard kick across the face that puts him out. Drake quickly retracts his staff as the smoke fades to reveal the lead and final thug with his rifle pointed down at him.

LEAD THUG

You're outta smoke, boy.

CRACK

The golden post from the velvet rope smashes the lead thug across the back. He turns only for Tommy to clock him across the face with the post, lying him out.

TOMMY

You looked like you needed a hand.

Tommy smirk with a certain sense of smugness while offering a hand to Drake. Drake huffs a breath and opts to get to his feet without any help.

DRAKE

Not bad.

Tommy rolls his eyes and over-exaggeratedly nods his head.

TOMMY

Oh, okay. I just saved your ass.

DRAKE

Do you see the other five guys that are laid out? Yeah. That was me.

Tommy narrows his eyes on Drake suspiciously.

TOMMY

Yeah. How did you do that?

Drake pops his collar.

DRAKE

Swag.

TOMMY

Wow! Are you thirteen? I'm legitimately asking how you took out five guys in a cloud of smoke and that's the response you give?

Drake shrugs his shoulders in a very careless manner towards Tommy's insults and questioning.

DRAKE

Maybe just be happy that I helped save everyone.

TOMMY

Ohhh. What about the two that were robbing the place? Because I don't see them anywhere.

DRAKE

I was a little busy taking out five guys with guns. What were you doing?

TOMMY

Saving you. Did you forget already?

BANG

Tommy and Drake fail to notice the thug just able to lift his gun and fire. The bullet hits Drake in the shoulder and he goes down, wincing as he grabs at the wound. Tommy spins around and raises his makeshift weapon, but he's already in the gunman's aim and preparing himself for the worst.

CRASH

The punch bowl shatters over the thug's head and he goes limp as he loses consciousness. Liz stands over him and wipes her hands on her dress before hurrying over to Drake, kneeling down to check on him.

LIZ

Oh wow. That's a lot of blood. Tommy, can you call-

Liz turns to Tommy him already rushing to the entrance.

TOMMY

I'm gonna see where the other two went. You take care of him.

LIZ

No! Tommy! Wait!

Tommy ignores Liz's shouts, continuing out the door without even looking back.

LIZ

Damn! He's going to get himself hurt.

DRAKE

Go! I'll be fine.

LIZ

Are you sure?

DRAKE

Go! Someone has to stop them.

Liz hesitantly nods her head while Drake is already wrestling his cell phone out of his jacket to call for help.

LIZ

Okay. Okay!

Liz gets to her feet and rushes out the exit only a few moments behind Tommy now. She pulls out her phone as she continues to run as fast as she can in her heels.

INT. UNDERGROUND LAB - CONTINUOUS

Kate sits at her usual spot in front of the computer screens.

KATE

I've already seen what's going on. I'm glad to know that you're okay.

INT. ROSE HALL - CONTINUOUS

Liz hurries through the lobby and diverts herself down a path that doesn't involve heading directly towards the oncoming E.C.P.D. officers rushing to the main ballroom.

LIZ

Nicolas and Stefanie got away with the cash. Tommy's chasing after them.

KATE (O.C.)

Tommy?

LIZ

I tried to stop him. He's playing hero for some reason.

KATE (O.C.)

Well, he won't have much luck. The pair have been cornered by E.C.P.D.

LIZ

That's great.

INT. UNDERGROUND LAB - CONTINUOUS

Kate nods while glancing up at one of the screens.

KATE

In theory. They're in a standoff at Holloway Bridge. E.C.P.D. has it shut down from both sides. Suspects are threatening to blow the bridge if they advance.

LIZ (O.C.)

Explosive confirmation?

KATE

I can't tell, but given their history... If you can get close enough, I can do a proper scan and I may be able to remotely deactivate it.

LIZ (O.C.)

I'm going to pretend that you said you can definitely deactivate it. I'll call you when I'm in position.

EXT. HOLLOWAY BRIDGE - NIGHT

The one and a half mile bridge connecting Eldred to the next city has been completely shut down with red and blue lights illuminating both ends of the bridge. In the center, Punch and Jewel have been left among the sea of abandoned vehicles.

Bullock walks to the front of the police line at the Eldred side of the bridge. He raises a megaphone to his mouth to address the suspects.

BULLOCK

This is Commissioner Bullock! I'm giving you one final opportunity to turn yourselves over and end this peacefully.

PUNCH

EAT SHIT!

Punch shouts loudly, echoing through the silence left in the wake of Bullock's announcement.

The metal framework beneath the bridge provides a dangerous, but capable trek for the Red Hood to travel undetected while carrying Punch's words to him.

RED HOOD

Classic piece of trash.

MARTY (O.C.)

Excuse me!

RED HOOD

Not you. Tell me I'm close enough that you got something.

INT. MARTY'S APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS

Marty is still at his computer tapping away at the keyboard.

MARTY

I've definitely picked up a signal. You know, it's funny that this chick can put together an intricate explosive but she doesn't do a very good job of masking the wireless detonator signal. It's almost like she wants to be hacked.

RED HOOD (O.C.)

Yeah. That's real fascinating, Marty. Have you diffused it yet?

Marty rolls his eyes at Tommy's impatience.

MARTY

Working on it. Almost there- shit.

Marty stares at the screen in confusion, blinking his eyes a few times.

RED HOOD (O.C.)

What? Marty?

MARTY

It... it's diffused. I mean, the signal just died before I could finish! How rude! I had it! I didn't need help!

RED HOOD (O.C.)

It doesn't matter, Marty. I'm going in.

The phone beeps as the call ends, leaving Marty to stare at his computer screen in disgust yet again.

MARTY

I had it!

EXT. HOLLOWAY BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS

Jewel is crouched down behind a car with her cell phone in her hand, the detonation screen up and ready to do damage while Punch paces bravely out in the open.

PUNCH

We're not giving the money back. We're not going to prison.

JEWEL

We might die.

PUNCH

We might die, yes. But we aren't going to prison. They'll never take us alive, I can assure you that.

Like a true psychopath, Jewel squeals with delight at that and claps her hands, nearly dropping her phone.

RED HOOD

Then I guess it's a good thing I'm here.

Jewel shrieks in surprise at the Hood casually standing on the ledge of the bridge, leaning against one of the support beams. Punch quickly moves between Jewel and the Hood, taking a defensive stance with his gloved fist raised.

PUNCH

You just made a big fucking mistake, you masked freak.

RED HOOD

Aw. Now that hurts. I don't wear this mask because I'm a freak. I wear it because a lot of people are going to disagree with what I do to the two of you.

Hood drops down off the ledge onto the bridge and leisurely strolls closer to the villainous duo.

JEWEL

Punchy?

Punch throws a hand up in her direction.

PUNCH

Hold up, babydoll. You too, red. Take one more step and she's blowing this whole bridge to rumble. That what you want?

Hood hesitates a moment, seemingly mulling it over with a visible bobbing back and forth of his head before deliberately taking one more step. Punch sneers in disgust.

PUNCH

Have it your way.

Punch lowers his hand and Jewel absurdly gets a twisted grin on her face as she taps the detonation but nothing happens. She looks at her phone in surprise, mashing the detonation button over and over again.

JEWEL

What the? Punch-eeeeeeee!

She whines and throws her phone down in disgust. Punch scoffs with a grin on his face.

PUNCH

Clever bastard. Let me give you a hand.

Punch advances on Hood with his fist raised. Hood avoids the gloved fist and drives a knee into Punch's stomach. He immediately grabs at the metallic fist and admires it.

RED HOOD

Nice gear. Where'd you get it?

PUNCH

None your business!

Punch rips his arm free with a spinning backfist that Hood manages to duck before driving a boot into Punch's chest to knock him back a few steps.

CLICK

The moment Punch stumbles to a stop, Hood already has one of his guns drawn and aimed directly at him.

RED HOOD

I'm making it my business. Should've answered when you had the chance.

BANG

Hood pulls the trigger without a second thought, causing Jewel to scream at the top of her lungs.

BATGIRL

Rapidly descends from the sky, tackling Punch to the ground to spare him from becoming Hood's next casualty.

The gunshot catches the attention of all the officers, who all raise their firearms.

BULLOCK

Hold your fire! Hold up!

Bullock panics at the sight of Hood and Batgirl in the distance, waving his arms at his officers while fumbling with his police radio.

BULLOCK

Hold your fire! That's an order!

Back on the bridge: Punch eyes the blonde bat on top of him with a sleazy grin and a raised eyebrow.

PUNCH

Well hello there. Eager, are we?

Batgirl rolls of off him to her feet, launching a kick at Hood's aimed weapon. He draws back out of range, spinning on his heels to deliver a back elbow. Batgirl catches the strike just millimeters from her face, immediately delivering a raised knee to his ribs followed by kick to the stomach.

HOOD

Barely registers the strikes to his military grade armor, jerks his arm free, and backhands Batgirl across the face. The impact knocks her aside and makes way for

PUNCH

To deliver a tech-powered fist into that military grade armor, sending him back into the railing with a grunt.

PUNCH

That's teamwork, you bastard.

Punch grins from ear to ear and turns towards Batgirl to take a right hook across the face.

PUNCH

What the-? I thought we were on the same side against this asshole!

Batgirl lands a left hook on the stunned Punch and his face contorts to absolute rage.

PUNCH

Fine! Be that way!

He strikes out with a punch of his own but Batgirl is able to evade while scoring with a scorpion kick to the face, followed by a spinning back kick to the chest that knocks him into one of the abandoned cars.

BANG BANG BANG BANG

A barrage of bullets riddle the car as Hood opens fire on Punch with dual pistols drawn, causing him to scramble over the vehicle to take cover.

Batgirl launches a Batarang that soars directly at Hood's head. He just barely dodges it, losing his footing in the process and falling backwards.

Batgirl turns her attention towards Punch, but Jewel leaps onto her back. Batgirl struggles with the scrappy woman trying to choke her out. She leans forward, throwing Jewel off. Jewel is barely to her knees when Batgirl throws a kick across her face that sends her toppling over.

Giggling echoes throughout the bridge, keeping Batgirl's attention on Jewel. The small brunette sits up on her knees, laughing uncontrollably. She holds up her phone with the detonation screen active. Batgirl looks over her shoulder, spotting the small gemstone on her cape. She reaches for it in a panic, pulling at her cape. The laughter gets louder as Jewel gets to her feet and waves goodbye to Batgirl. She brings her thumb to the button and-

BANG

A gunshot rings out, causing everyone to suddenly stop.

Jewel glances down at her chest, her shirt quickly becoming soaked with her own blood.

Hood lays back against the railing of the bridge with his pistol aimed directly at the explosive maniac.

PUNCH

NOOOOO!

Punch slides over the hood of the vehicle to meet Jewel just as she crumbles over into his arms.

PUNCH

No! Come on, Jeweleebooley sweetie. Don't do this to me. Come on!

He shouts angrily as her eyes fall closed. She groans helplessly and shakily lifts her cell phone.

Hood gets to his feet and races across the bridge towards Batgirl, still trying to remove the explosive. Hood grabs her cape and tears it from her suit. He wads it up and flings it over the edge of the bridge just as-

BOOM

The explosion lights the sky up, rocking the entire bridge in the process and causing Batgirl to lose her footing. Hood quickly scoops her up, one hand catching her around the waist while the other cradles the back of her neck. She freezes in his embrace, staring up at him in surprise.

Punch holds Jewel's lifeless body in his arms, his face contorting into absolute rage as he raises his eyes to the masked pair. Releasing Jewel, he rises to his feet and exposes a control setting on his glove. He turns the knob all the way to the right and slaps the compartment closed.

Hood pulls Batgirl upright from their unexpected embrace, awkwardly backing off of her. The thundering footsteps of Punch draws both of their attention and Batgirl spins around just as Punch rears back with his fist and strikes out with all of his strength. Hood shoves Batgirl aside and steps up into the

CRUNCHING SMASH

Of Punch's fist. The full force causes Hood to be thrown off his feet, soaring several feet before his body collides violently with the concrete. He rolls a few more feet before lying still on his back.

Punch seethes with rage that sees no relief from Hood's downfall. Fueled by his anger, Punch advances on the now-helpless murderer only for

BATGIRL

To double him over with a kick to the midsection, immediately followed by a knee to the face that throws his head back. She ties his right arm up with her own, delivering a flurry of shots back into his face from her left elbow until he's dazed enough for the glove to be removed and sent out of his immediate reach. She tugs on his arm with enough force to drag him over and wrench both arms behind his back, slapping on a pair of cuffs to render him harmless.

PUNCH

You bitch! Just kill me.

BATGIRL

Wrong vigilante, Lil Mac.

Batgirl dismisses him and rushes towards Hood's body. She slows her approach at the sound of life coming from him. With a groan, he struggles but manages lift his head to reveal

TOMMY MOORE'S BLOODIED FACE

Through the shattered half of his helmet. He winces and reaches up, feeling the broken edge of his helmet and seeing Batgirl staring down at him.

TOMMY

I... I...

He fails miserably to formulate a coherent thought to explain himself.

BATGIRL

Go.

The single word catches Tommy off-guard, spoken so low that he wonders if he even heard it right.

BATGIRL

Just go.

She repeats herself a little louder and starts to back away from him. Tommy sits motionless for a moment until the sounds of sirens in the distance. He forces himself up and glances at Batgirl with regret before staggering to the edge of the bridge to literally tumble over the railing. Batgirl rushes in a panic to peer over the edge, finding no sign of him whatsoever as her eyes scan the water below. The sirens grow closer and she glances back at Punch, finding him still cuffed and sitting defeated next to Jewel's body.

INT. AL GHUL ESTATE - SAME NIGHT

Ra's al Ghul is seated in his study looking out his full length window. Talia enters the room, quietly closing the door and then approaching her father's chair.

TALIA

The suspects have been stopped. One detained, one dead.

RA'S

Performed by whom?

TALIA

Red Hood killed the female. Batgirl apprehended the male.

Ra's falls silent, closing his eyes in deep thought. After a moment, he opens them.

RA'S

It appears Ms. Kane is following in the footsteps of Mr. Wayne.

TALIA

To no one's surprise.

RA'S

It's unfortunate, but yes; expected. He also failed to attend this evening, sending his protege in his place. That spoke highly of his faith in her to wear his mantle.

TALIA

She is no Bruce Wayne. She's not even Tim Drake.

Talia turns away from her father in disgust and walks towards the door.

RA'S

Talia?

She comes to a stop at her name, half-turning back to him.

RA'S

Forget Ms. Kane.

TALIA

Already forgotten.

Turning back to the door, she reaches for the handle only for his voice to stop her once more.

RA'S

Turn your attention to Mr. Thomas Moore.

Talia glances back at her father over her shoulder.

RA'S

The Red Hood is your new target.

INT. MOORE MANOR BASEMENT - LATER

The large metal door slides open with much effort on the part of Marty. He makes his way into the makeshift command center that somehow looks bigger than ever to him.

MARTY

Tommy? Hey, you in here?

Marty walks further into the spacious area, looking everywhere possible that he would expect to find his best friend. He sighs in disappointment at the lack of result.

MARTY

Where the hell are you, man?

He walks a little bit further, spotting something on the floor. He hurries over, picking up the shattered remains of the Red Hood helmet. He stares down at the wrecked piece of armor before glancing around the empty room one last time.

With a sigh, he lowers the helmet to his side and eventually lets it fall back to the ground.
