Rhythm and Rhyme: Music & Poetry
This week you will practice various time signatures including simple and compound meters, and create haiku poetry using music vocabulary and rhythmic performance.
Materials Needed: Blank paper, markers, “drum sticks” from music kit or something to tap out rhythms on a drum, bucket or flat surface.
Steps:
- Head to Chrome Music Lab: Rhythm and practice each exercise which will lead you through several different time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8).
Students can also change the rhythms to explore how to count!
Record yourself performing one of the exercises and post it to our FlipGrid.
- Create a poem using 10 randomly generated music words
- Use this link to spin the wheel and collect your 10 randomly generated music words. Write them down on a separate piece of paper.
- Order the words to meet the requirements of a haiku. You may add connecting words such as: ‘and’, ‘with’ and ‘the’ if you would like, but your poem does not need to “make sense” or be a complete sentence.
*You may not need all of the words that you collected and you are welcome to create MORE THAN ONE!
- Select paper to use for your poem and write it in straight line stanzas, a design shape - be creative! You may also draw pictures or paste cut-outs from magazines to enhance your haiku through visual art!
- Send a picture to Ms. Meg @ meg.boerner@artspacecharter.org
