Exciting News!
Last week, the PTSD FoodService won the National Breakfast TrailBlazer Award for reducing sugars and sodium in our breakfast meals while increasing the number of meals served!
Food Service Director Shannon Gray proudly accepted the award in Las Vegas, alongside PTSD Superintendent Linda Rosenbury and Executive Director of Business, Finance and Operations Amy Khile. This award is part of the USDA's effort to improve the nutritional quality of school meals.
To be considered for the award, Shannon submitted an application including a month of menu options along with recipes for many of our freshly-prepared dishes.
"It's nice to have this kind of recognition on a national level," Shannon said. "We've been expanding our fresh food meals over the past few years, and the kids are responding by choosing to eat the meals provided. Some even come with lunchboxes in hand but still pick up a tray of fresh food! They're eating more healthy options than ever before."
While transitioning kids from high-sugar and high-sodium foods to fresh, nutritious options has been a gradual process, we’re thrilled to see them looking forward to Fresh local stretch made meals and creative ways we're packing nutrition into every bite!

Salish Coast Elementary Garden Work Party
In the beginning of June we had an awesome group of volunteers from Windermere Real Estate come help out in the teaching garden for their community service day. We tackled some big and needed weeding projects, turned the compost, and transplanted some perennials. Our big task was preparing and clearing out space for our new garden shed! Volunteers had an introduction to our “sit spots” which is how we begin every garden class for 1-5th grade. We found a spot in the garden to sit, ground and quietly observe the garden. They also got to try some iced tea made from the garden herbs! We are always looking for volunteers to help maintain the teaching garden and assist in garden classes.
