National Board Component 1 - Miscellaneous Tips:
¨ Know where you are going
¨ Get there 30 minutes early
¨ Bring your ID – Driver’s License
¨ Earplugs (if noises distract you – other people typing, etc.)
¨ Dress in layers to adjust to fluctuations in room temperature
¨ Go through tutorial at least twice
¨ Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare!
¨ Know content knowledge! (Prompts can be drawn from standards.)
¨ Take bottled water & snack for break (if allowed)
¨ Know core propositions & standards (maybe create a mnemonic device for them!)
¨ You may type in narrative (paragraph) and/or bullet
¨ Tell why…Explain!!!
¨ Tie to student achievement!
¨ Make sure you read EACH prompt and you answer each question!
¨ White Board/Scratch Paper – while taking the test, jot down on the white board things that stand out to you (terminology, etc.)
¨ Get school textbooks in your subject area
¨ Study your content area/talk to colleagues that teach other subjects in your area
¨ Read over the Scoring Rubric!!
¨ Allowable items: comfort aids such as cough drops, glucose tables, eyeglasses, hearing aids, insulin pump attached to body, pillow or cushion, tissues
¨ Have a valid, government-issued photo ID with signature (first and last names on the ID must match the names on your National Board information)
¨ Review the NBPTS content specific standards assigned to Component 1 exercises
¨ Memorize Rubric level 4 for all 3 constructed-response exercises
¨ Review all possibilities for the approximate percentages of selected response items section
¨ Work the SAMPLE selected response items with the answer key
¨ Work the SAMPLE constructed response exercises with scoring rubrics
