- Check-in -- Paula (5mins)
- Welcome new members!
- Discussion Topics / New Business
- ‘Teaching/Supporting Men of Color in the Community College’ training -- Paula (10mins)
- Committee recommended renewing the training, but did not recommend administering an additional survey to participants because SDSU had shared their survey data.
- Discussed ways to improve participation for next round. Lessons learned indicate better participation when an organized cohort takes the training together and adds ancillary activities to the online training (Biology Department experience).
- Recommendations: 1.) Soon-Ah to leverage training through AFT Mentors and Mentees program. 2.) Work with chair of chairs committee to recruit instructional departments that want to complete training as a cohort. 3.) Work with Supervisors group to identify departments that want to go through training as a cohort.
- Guidelines for choosing external professional learning -- Paula (10mins)
- Reviewed sample document provided by Paula. Committee consensus that such a resource would be a valuable tool to provide for individuals planning to host professional development speakers. Will be considering as part of PDAC work for Summer 2020.
- Title V update -- Dan (5mins)
- City will submit our application in 2021. The professional development center will be a major item within the grant. The center will support the professional development components of the grant application:
- Equitable Assessment
- Culturally relevant pedagogy
- Culturally relevant content
- Student Services PD Pillars are still being defined
- Contract with grant writer has been secured. Committee meetings should recommence soon now that Adan Sanchez (permanent Title V director) has been hired.
- Follow-up Items from Last Meeting / Old Business
- PDC update -- Paula (5mins)
- No keys have been issued yet but Temmy Najimy and Dean Ewell have been facilitating access and helping with the move. Some furniture is in place, some arriving soon. Lunch and Learn Event on February 26th with Sasha Knox will be held in the center. We have some limited access to R-111 for larger workshops. Soft launch will happen once furniture is all in place.
- Funding Request workgroup -- Don+Anna (15mins)
- We had a successful meeting for travel approvals where requests under multiple programs were reviewed and approved. This is part of the effort to streamline the travel approval process. Paula showed the group the form that she has been working on to improve the efficiency, accountability and transparency of the travel process. Next steps will be to work on promoting the streamlining of the process, involve the VPs to support acceptance of the pre-authorization and funding request form in Business Services and at the district for travel processing in PeopleSoft.
- Continuous Improvement (needs analysis + evaluations) workgroup -- Paula (5mins)
- Needs analysis survey will be forthcoming and will inform planning work. The next 3-year planning cycle will commence at the April 10th Campus-wide planning summit. (Focus of summit with be Education Master Plan and Strategic Plan. Facilities plan will be developed at a slightly later date). Workgroup will combine info from needs survey with preliminary plan from April 10th event to begin work on 3-year plan.
- Review/add to DEC 2019 brainstorming -- Paula (5mins)
- Recommendation to work with Distance Learning to ensure the PD Center technology is equipped with all necessary software and hardware to support quality online teaching and cutting-edge classroom instruction.
- We have updated the way we collect the Flex surveys to an online system. We need to help train people learn to use this system. Suggestions: When we supply a flex number to someone, we should give them a template agenda for their event and instructions to include the QR code.
- Roundtable Updates, Open Comments
- Carol Withers: Trainings have been scheduled for all employees to learn the new library system and setting up their free New York Times account. Recommendation to committee members to encourage faculty to adopt New York Times as a required text for class.
- Susan Murray: Campus Educational Master Plan meeting is scheduled for April 10.
- Neary Sim: Paula working with Dean Erreca to develop a discussion panel/Q&A session with deans and chairs for the New Hires Institute.

- Soon-Ah Fadness: Mentors and Mentees is changing. Full-time cohort will be a two-year mentorship. Resource mentoring first year (whoever you need for the specific question with Soon-Ah as direct proactive mentoring support.) Move to paired mentoring in second year. Dept. chairs in discipline will identify adjuncts that should apply to the adjunct program. Adjunct’s will need to identify a mentor that they want to work with as part of their application. Classified Professionals will be able to participate as mentors in the classified mentoring program after 5 years here. They can apply to be mentees after one year of service. Will also be an application process. Supervisors need must support application. Mentors and Mentees program is also being expanded to Grossmont and Mesa. If anyone wants to be site coordinator for City, apply to Soon-Ah.
- Anna Rogers: Presented a “proposal” to develop a process for a “One Book, One Campus” program to Academic Senate on Feb 10, by leveraging the Thi Bui event that is being planned for September 10th, 2020, in conjunction with World Cultures and Professional Development. Academic Senate was receptive. Moving forward with planning and developing curriculum workshops and community partnerships.

Department completed Teaching Men of Color in the Community College online training together. Followed it with a Lessons Learned session to discuss together and enhance the impact of taking the class as a departmental cohort.
