Frequently Asked Questions

Sod Type

1. Warm Season:
   In the Southeast we recommend warm season grasses. Bermuda and Zoysia are great options. Bermuda needs full sun and Zoysia varieties are shade tolerant.
2. Cold Season: Cool season grasses are not as recommended in the Southeast due to the drought and heat we get in late summer.

Watering

3. Immediately After Installation:
   Water thoroughly and immediately after sod is laid to help it settle and prevent drying out.
4. Initial Watering:
   Water at least twice a day (morning and evening) for the first 2 weeks.
5. Watering Duration:
   Aim for 30 minutes each watering, or until the water soaks into the soil.
6. Transition to Less Watering:
   After the initial 2 weeks, reduce watering frequency to once a week, or as needed based on weather and soil conditions.
7. Signs of Underwatering:
   Watch for wilted, dull leaves, or longer-lasting foot impressions, which indicate the lawn is not getting enough water. Sod edges will turn brown.
8. Signs of Overwatering:
   Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to fungal diseases and root rot.

Mowing

1. Wait to Mow:
   Wait at least 2 weeks after installation to allow the sod to root.
2. Mowing Height:
   When mowing, set your mower to the highest setting possible to avoid cutting the grass too short.
3. Check for Root Strength:
   Before mowing, gently tug on a corner of the sod to ensure it is firmly rooted.

Fertilizing

1. Initial Fertilization:
   Apply a starter fertilizer as recommended by the sod supplier or a local lawn care professional.
2. Ongoing Fertilization:
   Continue fertilizing regularly throughout the growing season to maintain a healthy lawn. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging.
3. Fertilizer Type:
   Liquid or granular fertilizers are great options, just make sure to apply light applications not to burn the new sod.

Other Considerations

1. Best Time: The best time of year to lay new sod depends on the sod variety. For Warm season grasses, such as Bermuda and Zoysia, it is Mid to Late Spring. For Cool season grasses it is Late Fall.
2. Foot Traffic: Avoid walking or running on the new sod until it is well-established.
3. Pet Traffic: If you have pets, try to keep them off the new sod as much as possible, especially during the initial stages of establishment.
4. Soil Type: Ensure the soil is well-drained and amended with organic matter to promote healthy root growth.
5. Sunlight: Ensure the area receives adequate sunlight for the type of sod you have.
6. Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for any signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate action if necessary.
