Advanced Program History & Appreciation for the Visual & Performing Arts (HAVPA)

This course includes the disciplines of visual art, music, dance, and drama. Students become aware of how time, place, and society influence the arts. The course of study enables students to respond to all four art forms through describing, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating. Students will rotate through the disciplines throughout the year.  

History & Appreciation for the Visual & Performing Arts (HAVPA)

This course is an interdisciplinary humanities course that will provide students with an opportunity to interact with historical materials and periods of history in a kinetic way; developing a deeper knowledge of culture and history as well as materials science and artisan skills. Students will investigate objects from history, their social and cultural relevance, purpose, how they were made and elements of the larger culture of study.  After an exhaustive historical investigation of the object, students will then, using knowledge and skills that they have learned about the many aspects of the object, build their own rendition of the historical object utilizing their new knowledge of materials science and fabricating techniques and skills

Health Education I

Health Education I consists of instruction in the following health areas: personal wellness, behavior choices, communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental and emotional health, self-management and coping strategies, nutrition, safety and first aid. Note: Graduation requirement

Physical Education I

Prerequisite(s): None

Physical Education I consists of teaching lifetime leisure sports, individual sports, and team sports. Skills learned will be reinforced and advanced skills will be introduced. This course focuses on physical fitness and its evaluation and maintenance. The student develops a personalized fitness program based on his/her fitness goals. Content includes refining selected motor skills with emphasis on lifetime recreational activities to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Foundations Sport & Exercise

This course gives students who are involved in athletics a chance to condition in the off season and learn about different aspects of sports such as officiating, nutrition, rules, athletic training, and careers associated with athletics.

Conditioning

Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Sport & Exercise

Strength and Conditioning is designed for students who desire to increase muscle strength and mass. The class emphasis is on building strength, endurance, and power. Students will design individual workout plans, chart progress, test max levels, and revise and modify accordingly throughout the year. Some aerobic conditioning will be involved.

Advanced Physical Education

Physical Education II is designed for students who desire to develop advanced skills in selected games and sports including physical fitness. It emphasizes physical fitness and the refinement of skills, rules, techniques, and strategies for individual and team sports.

Fundamentals of Dance I

Fundamentals of Dance I instruct students in basic dance movement skills to increase body awareness, enhance self-image, improve physical fitness, and develop personal expression potential. Students will learn fundamental techniques in 6 week periods of study in yoga, ballroom and folk, modern dance/dance history, aerobics and conditioning, African dance and culture, jazz, dance composition and improvisation. Students should expect to challenge themselves physically every class. Students are graded on dress code for dance, class participation, effort, and attitude.

This course is designed to reinforce specific study skills leading to student success. All Manual students have access to time within the school day to study and receive academic support. It is a non credit earning course.

Peer Tutoring

Prerequisite(s): Instructor recommendation

This course is designed to train students in effective peer tutoring skills and provide experiences in peer tutoring. Interested students can provide support in the MAC, Library, or with a specific teacher. An application is required.

Student Assistant

Student Assistant is a non-credit earning course where students provide assistance to teachers or office staff in daily tasks.

Career Work Experience

Career Work Experience is a course at the secondary level focusing on cooperative work experience for students in the 12th grade. The course is designed for all students and the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be a useful tool in determining enrollment in the course. Career Work Experience includes a related class and cooperative work experience in business and industry.

Personal Financial Literacy/ BAS 120 JCTC Personal Finance

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to manage one's financial resources effectively for lifetime financial security. Topics include economics, money in the economy, budgeting, credit, consumer rights, investments and retirement planning.
