Date of Policy – Approved by CPP Committee 6 March 2023
Committee Responsible – CPP Committee
Review Schedule – Two Yearly
Date of next Review – March 2025
Statement of intent
Our policy has been created with health and safety, value for money, and practicality at its heart. It has been designed to ensure pupils wear clothing conducive to a successful learning environment. It is important that our pupils feel a sense of pride, belonging and community through a smart and practical uniform.
We believe a uniform allows all pupils, regardless of background, to feel equal to their peers and confident in their appearance. We also believe it is important for activities to be facilitated by specialised and appropriate clothing such as sports specific clothing.
Malden Manor Primary and Nursery School is committed to ensuring equality and value for money, and that no pupil is discriminated against due to their religion or belief, economic circumstances or social and cultural background – this policy contains provisions to meet these objectives.
Legislative framework
This policy has due regard to statutory legislation and national guidance, including, but not limited to the following:
The Education and Inspections Act 2006
The Education Act 2011
The Human Rights Act 1998
The Equality Act 2010
DfE (2014) ‘School Admissions Code’
DfE (2013) ‘School uniform’
Cost and availability
- Under the School Admissions Code 2014, the school must ensure that “policies around school uniform or school trips do not discourage parents/carers from applying for a place for their child”[1].
- Malden Manor Primary and Nursery School is committed to fulfilling the DfE’s recommendations on costs and value for money. Every care has been taken to ensure that our uniforms are affordable for all current and potential pupils, and that the best value for money is secured through reputable suppliers.
- Malden Manor Primary and Nursery School works with suppliers to obtain the best value for money. Most items are widely available. Any savings negotiated are passed to parents/carers where possible e.g. school tie.
- Where wholesale changes are required, the school ensures that assistance is provided to parents/carers struggling to meet the associated costs.
Religious clothing
- Some religions and beliefs require their members to conform to a specific dress code. Malden Manor Primary and Nursery School does not discriminate against any religion or belief; however, the school must weigh the needs and rights of individual pupils against the cohesion and health and safety concerns of the entire school community. The school endeavours to allow most religious requirements to be met.
- Parents’/carers’ concerns and requests regarding religious clothing are dealt with on an individual basis by the headteacher.
Equality
- The school is required to ensure that the Uniform Policy does not discriminate unlawfully.
- Every step has been taken to ensure that the cost of uniforms are not disproportionate.
Queries or complaints
- The school endeavours to resolve all uniform complaints and challenges locally and informally.
- The school complaints policy would be followed where any queries cannot be resolved
Non-compliance
- If a child does not wear the correct uniform, a verbal or written reminder of our expectations will be communicated to the parents/carers.
School colours
The school colours are: Navy and red
See appendix 1 for full uniform list
Jewellery, nails, make-up and tattoos
The following are not allowed:
- Jewellery, with the exception of plain ear-ring studs in pierced ears. One pair of stud earrings – no other piercings are acceptable. Where studs are worn they must be either removed during PE and games or covered with a plaster (provided by the parent) to prevent them from causing injury.
- Nail varnish or acrylic nails. The school office keeps nail polish remover and your child will be sent there to remove polish.
- Make up. If worn, children will be sent to the office to remove it.
- Excessive gel or mousse in hair.
- Temporary or permanent tattoos. Any child with a temporary tattoo will be asked to remove it.
- Pupils are not permitted to wear any other jewellery in the school grounds, due to health and safety risks.
Hairstyles
- Malden Manor Primary and Nursery School reserves the right to make a judgement on the suitability or unsuitability of pupils’ hair and appearance.
- Pupils with long hair must ensure that this does not impede their vision, cover their face or provide a health and safety risk.
- Flowers/bows or excessive hair accessories are not to be worn; however, hairbands and Alice bands should be navy or in our summer dress check. Long hair MUST be tied up daily.
Labelling
- All clothing and footwear should be clearly labelled with the pupil’s name.
The role of the parents
We ask all parents who send their children to our school to support the school uniform policy. We believe that parents have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. One of the responsibilities of parents is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform, and that it is clean and in good repair. If a child does not wear the correct uniform, a verbal or written reminder of our expectations will be communicated to the parents/carers. If a child arrives at school wearing inappropriate clothing the school will provide a uniform for the child to wear for the day. All borrowed items must be washed and returned to the Office within 3 days. The school has a small stock of good quality second hand sweatshirts.
The role of the governors
The governing body decides on the policy and monitors its implementation. Informal monitoring of this policy is also done by governors when they are in school. It considers all representations from parents regarding the uniform policy and liaises with the head teacher to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly and with sensitivity. It is the governors’ responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all regulations concerning equal opportunities. Governors ensure that the school uniform policy helps children to dress sensibly, in clothing that is hard wearing, safe and practical.
Policy review
- This policy is reviewed every two years by the governors and the headteacher.
- The scheduled review date for this policy is March 2025.
