Weekly Wednesday Update - August 16, 2017

Good evening, West Jeff Middle families. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for August 16th, 2017.

New Parking Lot Procedures: We have changed our parking lot drop off and pick up procedure. Please review the attached map and directions carefully.

Unlike past years, the middle and left lanes must remain clear at all times for busses and emergency vehicles.

For student drop-off, you will now proceed in the outer lane, the lane closest to the football field, and drop your child off in the area between the cones marking the beginning and end of the drop-off and pick-up zone. When dropping off students, please make sure that they exit on the passenger side of your vehicle and onto the sidewalk. Once your student has been dropped off on the sidewalk, you may check the middle lane for busses and, if clear, exit the drop off/pick up zone. Please stop at the crosswalk and proceed all the way around to the outer portion of the parking lot. If you need to park and come into the school you may enter the middle portion of the parking lot. Please do not use this as a drop-off zone. Pick up procedures will follow the same pattern.

There will be plenty of staff and PTA members on hand to assist you during this process. Please be patient and kind as the safety of our community is of utmost importance.

Solar Eclipse: Please review and complete the permission slip for the eclipse on Monday, August 21st, 2017. It is very important that you read all the information regarding this event. Permission slips are due Friday to students' Advise teachers. Students that do not turn in a permission slip will watch a live feed of the eclipse in our library.

Turkey Trot: The PTA is trying something else new this year! Rather than tons of little fundraisers (and constant harassment), we are hosting a Turkey Trot fun run on November 3rd. It is our hope that this fun-filled event, complete with t-shirts, wristbands, teacher excursions, and other amazing prizes will be great fun for the kids as well as serving as a community-building event for our families! (In other words, please join your student for the race!) In order for this event to be a success though, we need your donations. Our working budget this year is almost $25,000 and our goal for this event is $20,000. Please consider sponsoring your student and asking a few of your favorite businesses to sponsor the event in exchange for race day or online advertising. All students who raise over $10 will get a wristband, $50 gets them a t-shirt, more and they get access to various parties (see packet for full details).

Principal Selection Process

Area achievement director Dan Cohan sent information on January 12 to the West Jefferson Middle School community about the upcoming principal selection process. (The entire letter is available in Adobe PDF format at the end of this page.)

What will be happening?

We will follow a process that allows the school community to provide input into the leadership qualities that potential candidates should possess and provide for a confidential selection process. It will also involve selection of the committee that will be charged with recommending a principal finalist to the Superintendent and Board of Education.

Mr. Cohan will be meeting with staff and parent community at separate meetings. There are three parts to each meeting:

When will these meetings take place?

The staff meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 7th. Per district hiring practices, two licensed staff members and one classified staff member will serve on the principal selection committee. The representatives will be chosen by staff nomination and vote.

The parent meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 13 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM in the school library. Two parent representatives will also serve on the selection committee. The school accountability committee chair, Sara Miller, will be one representative. The other will be selected during the parent meeting by nomination and vote.

When will the selection process get underway?

The rigorous school-community-based principal selection process will occur in late February or early March. The specific date has not been determined.

What if I have more questions?

Concerns and questions may be directed to School Innovation & Effectiveness administrative assistant Cindy Barnett at 303-982-6939.

Weekly Wednesday Update - January 17, 2018

Good evening, West Jeff Middle families. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for January 17th, 2018.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Parent/Teacher Conferences are this month! When calling to schedule your conference please be sure to have the following information available:

Please email
Debbie Jessee or Julie Barrett or call the main office at 303-982-3056 to schedule your conference.

Remember to have all the above information that is needed for scheduling your conference.

After-School Reminders: We would like to remind families that students that are staying after school need to be with a teacher the entire time. We have had a number of students just “hanging” out at the school after dismissal. Unless students have an arrangement with a teacher, they must either go home on the bus or be picked up by 3:10 PM.

We have been receiving complaints from local merchants and other community members going about their business that students are exhibiting disrespectful behavior towards them after school. Among the reports: students are forming a human chain across the street blocking vehicles, throwing a football from one side of the street to the other as cars pass by, and flipping off people in their cars. These students go into the local grocery stores, fast food merchants, and the arcade and cause all manner of issues in these locations.

As these incidents are occurring after school hours, anyone who reports this behavior to the school is encouraged to report it to local law enforcement, and are also requested to pull their surveillance video so the school may assist with identifying the offenders.

Families are urged to speak with their students about this behavior and expectations for before and after school activities. We are all one community and being a productive and respectful member of it is an important lesson for young people. Additionally, some of these behaviors may be putting our students at risk for injury, which is extremely concerning. Thank you for your support in building and maintaining strong community partnerships.

Denise Capretta Memorial at Marshdale Elementary: Last year, our community lost Denise Capretta to ALS. She was a gifted teacher, mentor to many, lover of the outdoors, and a great person to call a friend. Denise's family wanted an appropriate way to honor her, so we are pleased to announce the dedication of the Denise Capretta Memorial Reading Loft in the Marshdale Elementary LMC.

All are welcome at Marshdale Elementary on Saturday, February 24th at 10:00 am for a loft unveiling, some words about Denise, and good conversation with Denise's family and friends in honor of our teacher and friend.

Weekly Wednesday Update - March 21, 2018

Good evening, West Jeff Middle families. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for March 21, 2018.

Spring Break: Classes will be off for spring break from Monday, March 26, to Friday, March 30. Students return to school on Monday, April 2nd.

Words Matter Now More Than Ever: Language can lift us up and inspire us, but it can also hurt, make us less than. Since the Florida school shooting, it is more important now to not dehumanize one another with threats of violence in our everyday slang. Words that are commonplace online, like "murder", "kill", "throat-punch", and so many more are not acceptable ways to communicate frustration, anger, or emotions. We are asking our Jeffco students to choose their words carefully because they matter, and we are asking you as a community to help model this behavior. It is all of our responsibility to model and create an environment of hope, health, and strength for our students.

8th Grade Photo Request: The Continuation Committee has something planned that requires your help: copies of your child’s kindergarten or younger picture AND a current 8th grade picture. They may be shared either by email to Melissa at mtnpayne@gmail.com or sent to the office in an envelope labeled Continuation Pictures. Be sure to label the picture with your child’s first and last name and indicate if you would like the picture returned. Please send in or email your pictures no later than Friday, March 23.

6th grade Field Trip: On April 19th, the sixth graders will be taking a field trip to the Denver Zoo to enhance their study of ecosystems and economics. We will be leaving the school at 9:00 am and returning at 2:00 pm. We would like to take several parent volunteers to help chaperone this trip, but due to space constraints cannot offer a ride on the bus. We encourage parent volunteers to carpool. If you are interested in chaperoning a small group, email ksjogren@jeffcoschools.us and please indicate if you are a zoo member.

CMAS Testing: We are now in our CMAS assessment window and have been working hard to prepare students for this important work. Please read the attached newsletter for more information on what the tests measure, our testing schedule, and tips for successful testing.
