Team Byc Match Race Policies
- Selection events: are viewed as part of the Match Race Program. The MR coaches do the event selection.
- Selection is not guaranteed and is performance based. Enrollment in the Youth Match Racing Program only guarantees the training platform and opportunity for selection.
- Selection events outlined are Summer Cup, Winter Cup, Rose Cup, Governors Cup, and Dickson Cup. Regatta selection will be based off of the Selection Criteria.
- Event entry fee will be covered by the program, but damages shall be shared equally between the team.
- Parents of program participants are not permitted to contact the Junior Sailing Staff with selection requests, and/or position requests for event selection. (Sailors are encouraged to communicate long term goals and plans to achieve said goals, but parents shall remain impartial to this process and not attempt to influence the selection outcome). Additionally parents shall not request justifications or comparisons between sailors in the program from Match Race Program coaches.
- Selection Criteria:
- Boat Handling
- Tactics
- Understanding of rules
- Communication
- Attendance
- Ability to work within a team
- Preparation level displayed in practice
- Weight
- Attitude
- Overall skill level
1.2 Non-Selection/Sailor Driven Events.
- For these events the helm organizes the team and gets their own entry.
- The team going to an event may request coaching, but coaching is not guaranteed at any non-selection events and will be largely dependent on the coaches availability.
- Pinnie Policy
- Pinnies do not cross apply from other programs.
- All sailors who get accepted into the Match Race Program are automatically Race Team (Black).
- To qualify for High Performance (White), sailors must place first at Dickson Cup or place top 3 at a grade 3 or lower graded event.
- Sailors cannot qualify for the High-Performance Race Pinnie at any event they crewed for a Coach. (i.e. Jeffrey, Max, Frank, Susannah)
2.1 Events: During events the whole entire team shall wear the same color pinnie.
- If the team is made up of 50% or less High Performance sailors, they will wear the Black Race pinnie.
- If the team is more than 50% High Performance sailors, the team shall wear the White High Performance Pinnie.
- Representation:
- While enrolled in BYC’s Youth Match Racing Program, sailors shall only represent Balboa Yacht Club for the duration of the program they are signed up to unless they are given permission from the Junior Sailing Staff.
4. Leave/ Tardiness/ Attendance
4.1 Expectations: Attendance of all sailors is tracked and used as a consideration for event selection. Sailors are expected to show up on time to all training sessions, except sessions where it is indicated they are not available on the Match Race Program application. RSVP shall be updated at least two weeks prior to the date they are relevant for.
4.2 Leave Requests: If a sailor is no longer available to practice on a day that is not already listed in their Match Race Program application they must fill out a leave request. Leave requests shall be submitted two weeks prior to the date of the session they will be absent for. Additionally the Program Coordinator shall be contacted on the Stack Team App and notified in the change of RSVP.
4.3 Attendance Penalties: Lack of punctuality from program participants will be recorded in attendance statistics. The following is how attendance will be tracked in different scenarios
- A participant who is absent without a leave request on a day they are otherwise expected to sail will receive -1 point towards their attendance. A participant who is exceptionally late without communicating with the Match Race Program Coordinator may receive -0.5 towards their attendance. RSVP’s for training sessions that are not updated at least two weeks before a session may result in a -0.5 towards their attendance.
- A full day of practice (weekend sessions) is +1 point towards attendance. A half day of practice is +0.5 point towards attendance.
- Participants who are sick, have an emergency, or other unexpected life events may be exonerated from point penalties in situations of tardiness or absence.
