UGA Cholesterol Study

The Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia Seeks Research Participants:

Men and women between the ages of 25-75years, with high cholesterol levels or slightly higher body size to plus size,

-who are not taking cholesterol-lowering medication

- who do not have diabetes

-who can eat milk/dairy products

-who do strenuous exercise less than 3 hours per week.

Requirements

This research study requires a 4-week commitment.

There will be 6 visits:

Sequence of visits and activities

What happens during the visits and the 4-week intervention?

We will measure your weight, blood pressure, body fat percent, and metabolic rate, and collect a blood sample. Additionally, on 2 of those visits, we will collect small amounts of blood before and after a meal throughout the morning. During the 4-week intervention, you will be required to eat a breakfast shake every day that we provide for you.

What’s in it for you?

Incentives: May earn up to $310

Benefits: You will also learn information about your body weight, blood pressure, body fat percentage, metabolic rate (estimated calorie needs), blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels and liver function measures.

What are the potential risks?

A certified phlebotomist will draw your blood at all visits, however you may experience light sting or bruising with a needle stick. You will receive a small amount of x-ray exposure through the DXA scan. Additionally, some questionnaires will be given over the internet, we will ask you to fast overnight, and we are providing food which may be of risk if you have food allergies.

Can you stop participating after you start?

Yes, you may refuse or cease your participation at any time during the study.
