Sár imirt sa chéad leath ón foireann baile a d’fhág seacht pointe idir na fóirne ag leath am a thug an lámh in uachtar doibh do na “Tones” agus de bharr an bearna sin bhíodar in ann an bua a fháil cé go rinne Scrín a ndícheall teach tar ais.

On a rainy, wet evening in the fortress of Kilberry the few spectators who ventured to watch weren’t let down as the quality of the game belied the poor conditions. The opening exchanges were well balanced with both teams garnering ample opportunities to register on the scoreboard however it was the ‘Tones’ who made the most of their chances taking an early lead of 3 points to 1 through Thomas Blaney, Iarlaith O’Kelly-Lynch and Cian O’Neill. Immediately following Skryne’s solitary response, Laochra Ó Fionnagáin found himself with only one defender to beat after a 70 yard run and did so with a trademark Finnegan dummy solo before despatching to the far bottom corner. A brilliant solo play. For the remainder of the half Wolfe Tones were well in charge with veterans such as Rossa McDonnell, Alan “Chewy” McKeever and “Billy” McLoughlin controlling the tempo of the game. Wolfe Tones converted two more via a “collector’s item” Jake McFadden point and a clean strike from Thomas Blaney leaving the half time score 1-05 to a solitary 0-01 to the purple and gold side.

Skryne came out in the second half with a point to prove and made that very clear with three points in as many minutes. Gary McFadden stepped up to play the captains role and registered his only point of the night, hoping to stop the rot. Unfortunately for Tony Kearney’s charges this was not to be the case and Skryne came back with a nice team goal to bring them right back into contention. Tones 1  06 Skryne 1  04. Substitute Caolán Ward made an immediate impact, his first 3 possessions yielded two points- one off either foot- and this was followed by a narrowly missed goal effort taking the paint off the outside of the right post. This helped to steady the ship and left a four-point gap between the sides. However the Tara men weren’t done yet. Throwing caution to the wind they chased the game throwing bodies  forward and this did give them the next score. In fact they added four in total in this period of the game but Tones matched them with Ward (2 points, 1 free) and Cian O’Neill keeping the Skryne revival at bay. Tones now led by two and Ward had a penalty opportunity to put the game beyond doubt following a foul on Thomas Blaney but his weakly hit effort was easily stopped by the keeper. Thomas Blaney who followed up to hit the rebound was denied when his effort was saved off the line by a defender rushing back. One more point from either side was all the time allowed and Wolfe Tones ran out deserving winners, 1-11 to 1-09.
