Origin story
The first time I saw the Greenland paddle in use, I was struck by its smoothness and silence.
That’s when I made the switch from the euro paddle.
After being Inspired by an Inuit rolling demo, I realized that mastering these rolls could open the door to the kind of adventures I was yearning for.
First I had to relearn how to move with my kayak.
After a few months, I found myself doing a balance brace and rolling with more ease than any of the most experienced paddlers I knew.
From this moment I was confident paddling in any conditions-there was no way I would capsize in rough water.
My rapid transition from a beginner to an advanced paddler had many of my peers thinking I was somehow a talented paddler.
While the admiration was flattering, deep down, I knew the truth - it wasn't about me or any inherent talent. The real heroes were the Inuit techniques, their centuries-old wisdom. That’s what opened up a world of possibilities for me.
Unexpected benefit story
Now I know a lot of people think of rolling when they hear Greenland paddle.
That’s actually not even where the paddle truly shines.
The next thing I noticed after learning to move with my kayak, is how much easier it was to paddle. Especially for going the distance.
And how much more stable it was for paddling in waves. The paddle gives you support because it’s in the right place for it. So it’s not like the euro paddle or the wing paddle, where you have to do some other technique to get support. It’s built into the paddle stroke.
But only when you learn to use it the right way.
I was finally able to go anywhere I wanted to, and with a lot more ease, which made exploring the beautiful coast even more enjoyable.
I couldn’t find what I was looking for so I created it myself story
I never aspired to be a kayak instructor. But seeing these techniques transform my own experience and realizing nobody is teaching this, it felt like a revelation that needed to be shared with the world. And I love getting more people enjoying the great outdoors-especially if it allows them to feel more at home in the wild.
Even after more than a decade and a half in this field, I don't see myself as an instructor. Instead, I prefer the term 'coach.' My role is to offer support and guidance to those seeking to enrich their kayaking experience. I focus on the outcomes that are important for you.
Despite no one endorsing it as the 'right way,' My 22 years of experience tells me it works. It's a way for the average paddler to be skilled like a pro.
I imagined a world where these core Inuit principles would be taught from day one. These skills weren't just for athletes - they were survival techniques for the average Inuit hunter that guaranteed superb kayak control. Their survival, and that of the whole village depended on it.
The internet had a few sporadic videos of Inuit paddling but there was nothing really showing how to do it. So, I took it upon myself to create courses that would teach these techniques.
After years of experimenting, (thanks to all the people who let me work with them) I finally had a clear process: A step-by-step guide designed for any average paddler, not just athletes. A course that didn't merely teach random skills but showed how everything was interconnected – your forward stroke blending into a stable brace seamlessly while paddling in waves.
I wanted paddlers to stay upright in their kayaks without having to rely on wet exits for safety. Sometimes it’s just not safe to come out of your kayak.
The goal was simple – develop an efficient forward stroke that offered tremendous stability, and if needed, a quick and easy way to recover.
After two decades of relentless trials and reverse engineering, I had them: three core pillars that transform how an average paddler interacts with their kayak and the water.
What set it apart was its simplicity - a few core movements that opens a world of skills, providing stability, control, and confidence on any adventurous expedition.
For me, kayaking has always been about discovering those heavenly places, and creating memorable moments. And these techniques are designed to help every paddler do just that - Confidently.
Case study story
I had an idea - a theory. If someone learns these three core elements, they could move fast, stay balanced, and even roll with ease.
I finally had the system, but no concrete proof.
A couple of years back, I got my chance to put my theory to the test.
I was curious to see what would happen if all three core elements were mastered by an inexperienced paddler.
Could it shortcut years of practice and lessons? I had a hunch that it would.
While leading a meetup paddle I had the perfect test subject show up. We had to wait for her because she was kind of slow. She told me she might give up on kayaking because of the pain she feels after even a short paddle.
I made her an offer. I will show you the 3 core pillars, and help you practice them until mastery, and I will film and document your progress and turn it into an online course. She said yes and together we created “Journey To Confidence”. That course is at the core of my “Dancing With The Sea Club”. A membership site for those who are ready to master the Greenland paddle.
Many folks only want to learn about specific parts of kayaking, not realizing that the true benefit lies in understanding these three foundations.
The results story
So what was the result of teaching someone the 3 pillars?
before:
She had to take ibuprofen and had wrist, elbow, shoulder pain, and now she paddles pain free.
She felt self conscious about holding back the group because she was slow, and now she’s the one that has to wait up. She’s one of the fastest paddlers I know.
She felt unstable and afraid to capsize in 6 inch waves, now she enjoys paddling broadside to steep breaking waves, even when they crash over her kayak.
She didn’t even imagine that going of multi day trips was an option for her, with her pain and lack of skills. And now it’s an activity she enjoys sharing with her friends.
I was on a trip to haida gwaii with her in summer 2022, and we got caught in some high wind and large breaking waves. We should not have been there, but sometimes it just creeps up on you. Even the haida were not going out that day. I asked her if there was any moment when she felt like she might go over and she said “no”. Not even a single time.
