Page Rules
1. General shitposting allowed and encouraged.
2. No posts which can be perceived as "cries for help" regarding suicide will be approved. Instead we will include resources (e.g. hotlines) on our submissions page, since we do not have a way of identifying or contacting posters.
3. No posts that individually name and target a person will be allowed, with the exception of posts relating to public figures and posts relating to statements made by non-public figures in a public forum (e.g. a maroon article author may be mentioned by name with respect to their article).
4. No posts that violate Facebook's community guidelines will be approved.
5. No posts containing libel or otherwise illegal content will be approved. Please note that we don't consider opinions, estimations, and hyperbole libelous.
6. No posts containing racism, sexism, homophobia or other bigotry (i.e. "hate speech") will be approved.
7. Posts containing advertisements for businesses, on-campus organizations, or events will not be approved.
8. No spam or otherwise malicious posts will be approved.
9. No spoilers for recent movies / tv shows / etc. (don’t be a dick). i.e. (as of May 2019) Endgame and GoT spoilers are off-limits, but a post saying that Kevin Spacey’s character in the Usual Suspects was Keyser Soze or that Bruce Willis was dead the whole time in the 6th Sense would be allowed.
10. No posts containing sexual solicitation or nudity will be approved.
11. Moderators may call a moratorium on certain topics if those topics are repetitive. These decisions will be announced by the page and last no longer than a week.
12. Moderators may append content/trigger warnings and resources for posts related to sexual assault and violence, as appropriate.
Caveats and Interpretations
Public Figures:
In determining who is a public figure, we consider the public to be the University of Chicago community, the main audience of the page. In this context, most students would not be considered public figures, but students running for or elected to student government,
prominent RSO/Greek Life leaders, and authors of Maroon articles would be considered
public figures as long as posts pertain to those positions. However, in the case of RSO leaders we prefer to stay on the safe side and say “the president of MUN” rather than “Name McLastName”. Professors and members of the administration are public figures. There are other times when students may become public figures, such as the whiteboard girl, but in these cases, it is best to get a consensus from all moderators to determine whether posts on these people should be allowed.
Libel
Libel is hard to prove or verify. When people (or more often organizations) request that posts be taken down due to libel, we demand proof from them. However, more obvious libel, such as “John Doe eats babies” should be taken down at the request of the Libeled.
Private Information
This is not related to a rule, because no such rule exists. There is no rule against publishing “private information” so long as it does not break any of our rules. This often comes up during times when Greek life is mentioned. For example, members can submit the content relating to meetings or discussions within Greek life, and we do not have to remove these posts because they are “private discussions”.
